    Petra, Family, and Foes

Rita, Peter, and Petra were like friends because they lived in the same house. But no, they weren’t. For Rita was 12, and 12-year-old girls don’t normally play with 8 year-olds like Petra. What about Peter? Well, what would a 20-year-old do with a 12 and 8-year-old? Nothing. Except that Peter was Petra’s teacher and she lived with him. But why was she living with him? Well, we’ll see. So Rita was 12 and Petra 8 and they weren’t friends. But they lived in the same house. Why? Because Rita was Peter’s sister. Therefore, she lived with her brother. But then where did Petra come from?

It was a cloudy Tuesday at 3.45pm, long after school had closed. 8-year-old Petra sat in her classroom looking though the windows to see if her mother was coming. She was all alone there and looking pale.

Ah...she’s still not in yet? Peter suddenly said after entering the room.

No sir, she replied in a quiet voice as she shook her head.

Oh, he replied and then sat down beside her and began to look through the windows. Suddenly, there was a loud clap of thunder and they both bowed down their heads in fear. Seconds later, it had passed and then Peter got up and quickly walked out of the room after saying, Petra, I’d be right back. But she didn’t hear him because her head was bent over the table. Peter went outside and stood on the verandah, looking ahead of him. It had begun to drizzle. He stood for about 10 minutes, but no one showed up. Then, he returned to the classroom.

Petra, let’s go. He said on entering the room but she didn’t respond.

Petra, get up. We’re leaving. He added as he walked up to her. She had her head over her desk and was quiet.

Petra, he called again and then tapped her hand. Yet she didn’t respond. Why? Because she was...asleep.

Petra...Petra... He tried waking her up but she looked dead. Dead asleep and so he carried her in his arms and walked away.

The moment he reached the porch, the rain came down with a loud cry and such force that his heart skipped a beat. But he looked more scared when some lightning suddenly appeared. Moments later, he took in a deep breath and then ran into the open. He had no umbrella and the water fell on him and the little girl in his arms. But unlike him, she complained.

Ah... She moaned and then opened her eyes. Peter was still moving through the rain and then suddenly, there was a clap of thunder and he screamed together with her. It sounded so frightening that he fell down with her still in his arms. Then Petra began to weep aloud.

Petra...it’s okay. We’re going home. We’re going home. Peter assured her and then ran ahead. He kept running until they reached the bus station 10 minutes later. However, no car stopped for them. Not the buses or the taxis. Neither of them. The thunder continued and Petra fell asleep.

Elsewhere, someone was also sleeping. It was a woman. A mid-weight woman called Lorcia. She sat in a small car and her head was over the wheel while her eyes were closed. The rain was still falling. But it was now quiet. The sky was partly dark and the clock in the car was ticking. When it struck 5, she immediately sat up and then looked at it.

5? She said in a tone of surprise and then quickly got down from the car.

Oh God...it’s 5 o’clock...oh...where’s the pan... She said as she entered the kitchen. Moments later, she was busily chopping up some carrots while something fiercely boiled on the stove.  She had forgotten all about Petra. But she wasn’t the only one. Even Peter had. After 20 minutes of waiting for a bus, one came by and they both got on it. Yet the bus was filled to the brim but for one seat, the one that Peter sat on with Petra. She sat on his laps and then the hour-and-half long journey began. At 6.30, Peter was asleep, and so were all the passengers seated in his row. They all sat with their heads over the seats before them. Sometime later, Petra woke up. But she wasn’t fully awake. So when she glanced around and saw that the place was dark, she thought that she was home and so stretched out over the bed and then slept. What bed? Oh...the laps of the passengers who had their heads over the seats before them. Minutes later, the bus stopped and some passengers got down. But no one came down from Peter’s row. Then on the next stop, Peter got up and then in a half-awake way, walked out of the car. Then the car moved away. But just moments later, he recalled Petra and then screamed at the vehicle as it sped on, Petra!

At 7.30, Lorcia was taking a shower. She looked relaxed as she gently rubbed herself with the soapy sponge. She was even humming a tune. Suddenly, a car hooted its horn and she stopped and said, He’s back. Then quickly, she rinsed herself and then put on a bath robe and then ran out of there. She raced to the gate and after opening it up, a car zoomed into the yard. Then as she shut up the gate, a man stepped out of the car and cried in a cheerful voice, Petra... Instantly, she halted in her tracks. She looked stunned, and in a low pensive tone said, Petra...

Petra... The man called a second time and then began to glance around.

Where is she? He said and then Lorcia gently shook her head, looking troubled. She held her hands behind her and then slowly walked towards him.

Honey, where is Petra? I thought she opened the gate.

No, she quietly said, shaking her head.

Okay, let’s get in. It’s cold. He said
