Chapter 1
These three a.m. starts were killing me. Admittedly, it was my first one but it was enough to have me questioning all my life choices.
Are you going to get dressed?
Mom asked, looking me up and down. She apparently didn’t approve of my pink zebra pajamas.
They’re going to dress me when I get there,
I replied. It was up to the show’s wardrobe manager, Luke, to decide what I was going to wear.
Until then…yeah, it was a pink zebra day.
Fine, just go or you’ll be late. Have a good day.
Mom kissed me on the forehead and pushed me out the door. She was probably keen to get back to bed.
So was I. But I got in the waiting black town car and closed the door. It was still dark out, reminding me that only crazy people and shift workers should be out at this time of the morning.
I closed my eyes and rested my head on the back of the seat. I was enjoying a nice nap when the driver announced we were there and opened the car door for me.
Rubbing at my sleepy eyes, I pulled myself to a standing position and flashed my ID to the security guards on the gate. From there, all I had to do was shuffle to hair and makeup and let them work their magic.
Man, did I need their magic. I hadn’t even thought to run a brush through my hair. My teeth were the only part of me that got any attention when my alarm had blared.
I was in such a state that I didn’t even see the guy before I crashed into his chest. My eyes blinked, seeing nothing but a green T-shirt.
Then they travelled up.
And saw Merrick Moon trying to suppress a laugh as he looked at me. He was gloriously perfect with his sunshine-colored hair sleeked to perfection, his brown eyes sparkling with amusement, and his clothes without even one wrinkle.
Good morning, Miss Watson,
he said cheerily. How could he be so perfect and happy at three a.m. in the morning? What was wrong with him?
Maybe the question should be what was wrong with me? Suddenly obscenely aware of my pajamas and bed-hair, I really wished the ground would open up and swallow me whole.
I don’t normally look like this in the morning,
I blurted out, lying with every word I said. I, uh, overslept.
I think you look adorable.
Ah, Merrick Moon, ever the charming leading star of Crompton High, our television show. In my head, I called him my boyfriend. In reality, I wasn’t sure what we were. We’d gone out on a few dates, talked extensively on the phone late at night, and he had gone to a lot of trouble to make up for messing up and not telling me we were going to be co-stars.
But we hadn’t kissed.
There had been nothing more than hand holding and I didn’t know what that meant. It wasn’t like we’d had a conversation and defined our relationship. Which meant we were in a state of limbo where I wasn’t sure how I was supposed to act around him.
I normally defaulted to clumsy fool because that’s what Merrick Moon did to me. It was difficult to have a conscious thought when he was nearby.
He walked me all the way to the hair and makeup trailer, chattering about the scenes we were going to film today. He was so animated, so switched on, and all so early in
