Is It Me, Or Is It My Age?

About this ebook
After climbing the stairs,
And reaching the top,
After pausing for breath,
And having to stop.
As it’s no longer clear,
As to why you are here.
Is It Me, Or Is It My Age?
This is one of the many verses in John Wood Philip’s book of poems, looking back through his life now that he has been through much of it, overcoming the many obstacles that life has thrown his way. We are taken through a whole range of emotions the author was feeling when he put pen to paper, and this is evident in the writing. Some are poignant, some are true. Some are based on actual events, others are entirely fictional; it is left to the reader to decide which are which. Either way, the author hopes that you will enjoy reading them as much as he enjoyed writing them.

Many thanks to all of those people who encouraged me to keep on writing these poems and to get them published into a book.
A special mention to John Mvula, my friend who helped me collate all my poems and prepare this book for publication.
Gloucester College who helped me with the course I was taking and without whom I would never have started writing poetry.
All my friends at the Brunswick Baptist church, Gloucester City Mission and Gloucester Salvation Army for all their free food and drinks they have supplied me with over the past two years.
Without their encouragement I would have given up all hope a long time ago.
To you all a big
THANK YOU.

Foreword
It all started for me in September of 2013 when I decided to start taking an evening course in photography. Little was I to know what would happen then. There I was, well into my course taking photographs of my given subject of the week. We were told to keep a portfolio of our work so that it could be displayed at the end of the term. This I did and started showing friends some of the photos I had taken. They were very good, but rather boring to look at, so, I decided to start writing poems to go along with some of my photos to describe why I took that particular picture. The first few I wrote were about nature: a spider, a bee, autumn leaves and then the tall ship in the docks undergoing renovation. After showing these to my friends I started getting comments on how good they were, and then suddenly out of the blue I was getting words coming into my head, often at two or three in the morning. I would wake and find that I was unable to sleep, so many words were drifting around inside my head I just had to write them down.
As soon as my pen touched the paper off I would go, words would pour into my head from where I knew not. I found I was writing these verses of poetry that I simply had no idea I could write. All of these poems were written by me at a time when I was going through different emotions, as you will be able to tell from the poems themselves. Some are poignant, some are true. Some are based on true facts, others are entirely fictional; I will leave you to decide which are which. Either way, I hope you all enjoy them as much as I enjoyed writing them.
