About this ebook
THE MAGIC FOREST HAS MANY SECRETS, SOME ARE OLDER THAN THE FOREST ITSELF.
Young wizards Andrew and Joey Coulter are used to risk their lives to protect New York from all sort of paranormal creatures. What they're not used to, is being trapped in the middle of the Magic Forest with ghouls' shadows hunting them while they're desperately seeking an antidote to save Raul's life.
Who sent those creatures to kill them? Were the same people who unleashed dangerous monsters all over New York? Unfortunately, there's no time for questions, since Raul's days are numbered and Andrew and Joey must fight to break free and save him and the city of New York.

CHAPTER 1
HUNTED
K eep going North! I know they went that way!
Doolittle rushed as he, Andrew and Joey shot through the night sky above the Magic Forest on Joey's paper crane.
How can you be so sure? I see nothing!
Andrew replied, squinting to see through the darkness all around him. Thick clouds had now concealed the golden, full moon, leaving only the purple crescent one which didn't produce much light.
Orao's aura and mine are connected,
the tanuki replied. Keep your eyes open; he'll for sure signal his position... THERE! LOOK, STRAIGHT IN FRONT OF US!
He pointed frantically at a small dot of light, far away—so far that it was barely visible to the naked eye. Still, it was a pulsating golden beacon to guide them, like a lighthouse guides a ship to the shore in the darkest of nights.
WE ARE LOSING THEM!
Doolittle shrieked, noticing that the dot was getting further away. Honorable wizard, can't this thing go any faster?
Nope, sorry,
Joey apologized. I need to use great concentration just to keep it flying this fast...
Joey was doing his best not to show how exhausted he was. First the trip to the forest, then the unexpected battle with the ghoul's shadow and the complicated tai chi spell had all taken a toll on him. He was starting feeling really worn out but didn't want anyone to know. Especially not his cool, super-fit brother. Especially NOT under those circumstances.
All right, I believe I've discovered how this crane works,
Doolittle interjected, staring pensively at the crane's tail. I think I can help,
he said before laying his front paws on the tail and muttering something in ancient Japanese. Within a second, his magic surrounded the button of the origami bird and the craft suddenly flew much, MUCH faster, almost doubling its speed.
Whoa!
Joey erupted, struggling to keep the crane steady. That was powerful, Doc! Keep it up; we're getting closer!
SPHERE!
Andrew shouted, activating his sphere which immediately popped out of his jacket.
What are you doing?
The tanuki asked.
Calling our folks for backup. The sphere will help them find our position. I know it will also make us traceable by others, but we have no choice: we can't defeat another shadow now, not while flying at this speed in the middle of nowhere,
and I’ve already used half of my strength and feel exhausted, he added to himself. He prayed his aura didn't show it yet. Both his brother and Doolittle were counting on him; he couldn't let them down. Especially not his smart-ass brother who considered himself to be so much more intelligent. Especially NOT in those circumstances.
Head Nuduruchi, this is Andrew Coulter. I'm holding my sphere ... asking to please talk to you ...
he gasped, trying to sound as respectful as he could in spite of the situation. He assumed she'd already be upset with him, for obvious reasons, and didn't want to make things worse, not while chasing a murderous shadow on a crane made of paper. He stared at his sphere, glowing and spinning in front of him. It spun and spun for a few seconds, then suddenly went grey and fell on his lap.
WHAT THE FUCK?
Andrew hissed, staring at his sphere, horrified and surprised.
What’s wrong?
Joey asked, keeping his eyes forward so as not to lose control of the crane.
WE’RE CUT OFF!
His brother yelled back. NO SIGNAL!
What? FUCK!
Joey erupted, shocked. The paper crane lost altitude for a second or two but immediately regained it. Joey bit down on his lip. He had to keep it together, or they’d all die!
Why this continuous swearing?
Doolittle asked, perplexed. He clearly always expected good manners, no matter the circumstances.
We were told our wizard spheres would work in this area of the forest, but they don’t,
Andrew rushed. We can’t communicate with our base, we’re totally fucked off, I mean, cut off,
he corrected himself. We can’t call for backup, we ...
INCOMING!
Joey shouted.
Andrew turned to see his brother frantically pointing at the night sky. Four bits of darkness seemed to have detached from it and were headed toward them.
Ghouls' shadows, four of them!
Doolittle sounded terrified. Then he turned to the dot of golden light that was drawing nearer and nearer.
I’ll keep them busy. You go and save Orao.
But doc...
Andrew tried to protest.
Don’t worry about me, Orao is more important. He must NOT fall into the wrong hands! If I’m still alive, he’ll be able to find me once you’ve helped him.
Doctor, please don’t!
Joey shouted, but it was too late. Doolittle bowed to them, then muttered a magic formula which summoned a giant flying leaf. He jumped onto it and shot towards the ghouls’ shadow, a powerful disruption spell already burning in his paws. Andrew stared after him for a moment and couldn’t help wondering if he’d ever see him again. Hey, he couldn’t help wondering if he’d see any of his teammates again, or his mom and dad.
TAKE A COUPLE OF THE cymothoas to the lab to be analyzed. Then, please put a shrinking spell on all the rest and deliver them to my place,
Michelle Nuduruchi told Jones and Crane while nodding at the dead parasites floating in the sea, near the shore.
Right away ma’am,
Jones replied, picking up one with two fingers: It looked like a monstrous crab the size of a small dog with sixteen ominously thick legs. But, may I ask why you want so many delivered to your home?
"Of course! Once dead, they’re completely harmless and very tasty. In Kenya, we eat them
