    Introduction

    Whether you are an executive at an advertising company, a CEO, a freelance writer, an entrepreneur, an IT professional, a stay-at-home parent, a librarian, or a plumber, getting along with others is one of the keys to a happier life. Hopefully you will find this book of affirmations, as well as the exercises that I share in the back of the book for helping to improve your relationships at work and in your personal life, useful to you in achieving and maintaining healthy and nurturing relationships.

    I really like affirmations because it helps us to dispel the negative thoughts we might be thinking because of the critical statements that we heard during our childhood or later years, substituting positive beliefs. Louise Hay, who built her publishing company, Hay House, on her bestselling affirmation books, explains so well the benefit of affirmations in Meditations to Heal Your Life:

    Every single thought I have and every single sentence I speak is an affirmation. It’s either positive or negative. Positive affirmations create positive experiences and negative affirmations create negative experiences….If we continually repeat negative statements about ourselves or about life, we only keep producing more negative experiences. I now rise above my family habit of seeing life in a negative way. My new habit is to only speak of the good I want in my life. Then only good will come to me.

    In my previous four affirmation books, I focused on a specific relationship, like friendship, or an emotion, like happiness. I also wrote affirmation books about time management and even weight management.

    This new book covers a range of key relationships in our life, from parent-child to sibling, extended family to friendship, neighbors, romantic relationships, work connections, as well as service providers and, last but not least, the relationship we have with ourselves. The 365 affirmations begin with eight affirmations that could be applied to all relationships, followed by affirmations for each of the nine categories of relationships covered in this book.

    I am sharing with you, kind reader, positive statements about key categories of relationships based on my decades of original research as a sociologist, beginning with my book on singles, Single in America, and my dissertation on friendship followed by three books on friendship, a scholarly annotated bibliography, Friendship, and the three popular books, Friendshifts, When Friendship Hurts, and Friendgevity (forthcoming), three books on work relationships including Business Protocol, Who’s That Sitting at My Desk? and Productive Relationships, as well as relationship coaching and leading workshops, observing others as well as my own
