    Anguish-Wil's Story - K.C. Rice

    PROLOGUE

As I reach the door to the roof, finding it ajar, I quickly slip through, my Glock gripped tightly in hand. Quietly making my way along the wall of the roof, trying to stay in the shadows to have the element of surprise on my side.

My back tight against the wall, I hear shouting and then the unmistakable, POP. Fuck! My adrenalin hitching up another notch, as my mind recognizes the sound of a gunshot, followed by a scream! Shit, that was Sarah!

Rounding the corner, I see only the figure of one person making her way to the edge of the rooftop. FREEZE! I yell. As she turns brandishing a gun, DROP IT! I command. But she raises it instead, almost as in slow motion, all the air escapes my lungs as I recognize Candy instantly.

Hearing a faint and desperate cry from over the side of the building, help, Wil, I’m slipping! Sarah! Keeping my gun pointed at Candy, I dart towards the voice.

I don’t think so Lover boy Candy says with a smirk, raising her gun again, this time pointing it at me, stopping me in mid-step.

She’s as good as dead, you move one more inch and you’ll join her. Without hesitation, I fire my Glock. Candy looks surprised as she drops to the floor.

Lightning flashes, blinding me for a moment, thunder rolls, shaking the rooftop as the swollen black storm clouds find their relief, releasing their rain in torrents. Running towards the edge, I slip on the loose gravel, as I fight to regain my balance, I hear Sarah, Wil!

Grabbing the edge I lean over, looking down I find Sarah desperately holding onto the copper finials, blood mixed with rain running down her hands and arms. Her face soaked with tears and rain. Hold on Baby, I’ll get you. I stretch over the edge, my muscles burning as I force them to stretch farther then they’re made to.

Lightning flashes once again, giving me a clear view of the fear in Sarah’s pleading eyes, please hurry, I can’t hold on much longer, I’m slipping she cries. As the rain continues its on-slot against us, I fight to clear my eyes as I focus on the one woman who was able to do what no one else could, claim ownership of my heart.

Reaching my arm down even farther, try and reach up, Baby. I’ll pull you up. I say desperately I can’t Wil,  I can’t, she cries.

Yes you can, you’re stronger than that, you can do it, I plead with her. Damn this fucking rain! Stretching my arm even farther, come on damn it, stretch, the cold pouring rain does nothing to cool the burn in my shoulders and arms as I struggle to reach her hands, her fingers, anything so I can pull her to safety.

My face is soaked by the rain, or perhaps it’s the tears that are falling freely as I struggle in vain to reach her. Looking up at me, her beautiful chocolate eyes.

The very eyes that seared my heart and soul last night as we made such perfect love. God please help me-. Wil, I love you, forever and a l w a y s , she cries as her fingers slip from the finials. My heart stops as I scream, NOOOO, Saarraahhhh! I lunge once more in attempt to catch her, failing, watching in horror as the darkness of the rain swallows her. No No No No! I cry.

Falling to my knees in anguish, No! No! No.... I just found you, I sob. I can’t lose you now, SARAH!!! Turning I sit with my back to the edge, my knees bent with my head between my hands, as the rain continues its assault. I sit in shock.

Not quite sure of the time that’s past. I hear a soft female voice, Detective Mathews?

    Jerking my head up, Sarah?

No, sir, I’m Officer Hardin, are you ok? She asks as she hesitates and walks slowly, cautiously towards me as though I’m an animal she’s afraid she’ll spook. Shaking my head and turning away, Sarah, she.........................she fell, I tried, I.......... I couldn’t reach her. Damn it I tried.

Sir you’re in shock and we need to get you off this roof top, the storms picking up. She says reaching her hand down to help me up, come on.

Smacking her hand away, I can get up on my own, I snap. Standing and making my way to the stair well, I stop to watch the officers secure the area and the M.E., as he covers Candy or Sandy or whatever her fucking name is.

Clean shot between the eyes?! I ask more a comment then a question. The M.E. looks up and replies, Yes, Sir, cleanest I’ve seen. Turning I continue my trek to the stairs, stopping, I pivot, needing one last look at the bitch who took my life away. Glad I killed her, but finding no relief in the fact.

As I step out of the building, I find total chaos on the street. Blue and red lights assault me. Fucking reporters fighting their way to the front, flashes from the cameras, yelling questions. What the hell?

Looking around, I search for Sarah.  There, about twelve feet to the left. Paramedics reverently cover her body with a cold white sheet as the Coroner weaves his way through the throngs of reporters and by standers as they gawk, hoping for a chance to see, a picture, anything they can use to make a story out of this tragedy. The fucking bastards.

I’m numb, I don’t know exactly how I’m even able to think or function. I guess it’s just instinct taking over, as I make my way through the pouring rain, reaching Sarah the same time as the Coroner. There’s blood, so much fucking blood surrounding her broken body, the very same body I held in my arms last night, the body I buried myself into as we made love, the body I was hoping to spend my life getting to know, each and every inch. Her beautiful chocolate eyes, and the way they lit up with her smile and turn the color of bourbon when aroused. -Why God? Why her? Because you don’t deserve to be happy, Wil. The little voice inside my head preaches, you let her down just like your team, you failed again!

Slowly the edges of the sheet begin to turn red as it absorbs the blood and rain from the road. Kneeling down, the Coroner gently raises the top of the sheet to uncover her face.

Closing my eyes and taking a deep breath, I step closer to see my girl. As I look down, I’m in complete and total shock. As all the blood rushes from my head and my breath hitches. Liam?  Oh my god.  It’s Liam?  It’s not........Where  where’s Sarah? I ask desperately. Searching franticly, I run up to the fire chief. Where’s the other victim? I ask breathlessly.

Looking at me like I had lost my mind, the chief looks at me hard and replies, There’s only one victim. A male. Caucasian. Placing his hand on my shoulder with look of concern on his face, Are you alright son?

Shrugging away from his hand, No, I’m not alright. I just saw Detective Knight fall from a fucking roof and no one knows where she is. I need to find her, she’s the other victim. There were two damn it, TWO! Looking around the chief turns to me, are you certain about that? My face turning red as my blood pressure begins to boil, losing all control I yell, What the FUCK is wrong with you people? YES, damn it! YES there are TWO FUCKING VICTIMS. I saw Detective Knight..................................... Swallowing the lump forming in my throat, as my breath hitches, I saw her fall, I tried to reach her, but I couldn’t I couldn’t reach her hands. She fell from THAT spot! I yell as I try to look up into the rain, pointing in the direction I last saw Sarah.

The fire chief yells over at
