About this ebook

Lucas is confident that nothing can come between him and Cecelia. With their time together passing easily like a sweet dream, reality finally catches up with them as Cecelia has to move hundreds of miles away to pursue her career in classical music. Although exuberant promises and vows are made, Lucas and Cecelia discover that while absence can make the heart grow fonder, it can also dampen the heat of a new romance. With their separation weighing on them both, they must find a way to forgive each others' mistakes and keep their romance alive.

    DAYS GONE BY

September, and summer was finally starting to fray at the edge, give over to fall. Mercury still approaching ninety more often than not but the change was coming, steadily. Rain, grey-white skies over the city and humid air so thick it was almost solid. Autumn in New York tempted, gleaming rooftops at sundown and all, but Los Angeles was waiting. The work was waiting and when Cecelia came back east it would be to the dirty slush and wet of a city January. The thought depressed her, a little, but not enough to temper the excitement of the new, not quite.

Lucas dug in against big changes, got anxious, wound up. Hated traveling. When she told him - till January, then back here - he got excited with her. Kissed her and said okay, made soothing noises and tea while she dealt with the logistics, the subletter and booking the flight and finding a place to stay. She turned it over in her mind: five months. It gnawed at her, how were they going to manage for so long, past the distant promise of Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years. They stayed up nights just talking, facing each other in his bed like closed parentheses. He heard her, listened to her brief spell of panic, and reassured her in typical Lucas fashion that she was a good person, a talented person, an attractive person, grant her grace, and the state of California would be falling at her feet before long.

They had a quiet dinner out the night before she left, met up with a couple of other musicians for drinks after although she was mostly abstaining, hadn’t wanted to fly with a hangover. Presently she was tucked up in a booth with her friends Jaycen on one side and Dahlia on the other, Lucas and his untouched vodka tonic across from her. Feeling warm and loved and a little weepy.

Cece, Dahlia was saying, into her sleeve.

Cecelia craned to look down at her, didn't quite succeed. Yeah, babe.

We're going to - we'll take care of Lucas for you, okay.

Lucas feigned terror. You're not going to kill me, are you?

Yes, Terrence said from across the table but Dahlia paid him no mind, waved a hand in Lucas's general direction and narrowly missed knocking over a glass.

I just mean we're going to look after him. While you're gone. All of us. Right, guys. A murmur of assent went around the booth, varying degrees of sarcasm.

Thanks, Dahlia, Lucas said and rolled his eyes.

Who's going to look after me? Cecelia asked her, mock
