    CHAPTER 1

    A PICNIC?

Miki and Siku weren’t the first kids who ever got lost in the woods, but they might be the only ones in their whole town who ever got trapped in a cave with a magical animal.

It all started that morning when the twins sat side-by-side on the couch watching TV.

The counters were already wiped clean. It was too late. Whatever Mom had made was already packed into a big mysterious basket.

You’ll have to wait until the picnic to find out. She snapped the lid shut and wrapped it in a big red blanket to keep it warm.

A Picnic? Outside? But snow is still on the ground.

Siku leaned over the basket and inhaled. Mmm. It smells like cinnamon. If it included delicious food, maybe a picnic wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

Mom rested her hands on her hips. "We’re
