    Prologue

    Ten Years Ago

Colton Black slammed the car door behind him, but he didn’t cross the street, not yet. He leaned against his beat-up green Toyota. His father had given him the second-hand car when he turned sixteen and obtained his driving license. God but that felt like centuries ago. It had taken him across the country, past seemingly endless dusty roads, flea-bitten motels, truck stops, and roadhouses. He couldn’t recall the number of times he’d cleaned the blood off its hood or seats.

Colton returned his attention to the house, the suburban neighborhood he’d spent most of his life in, except now he felt like an outsider looking in. His family home stood so close, and he only needed to walk up the door and ring the bell. His insides twisted, and dread filled his belly. The scars on his throat began to itch, but he culled the urge to scratch at them. The Black family home looked identical to the houses on the street, two floors, modern exterior, white paint and garage door on the right.

Childhood memories resurfaced in his head, but he couldn’t afford to be sentimental. The beast that now lived inside his skin grew quiet, silent. Good. Colton wasn’t in the mood to fight another inner battle.

Let’s get over this, he muttered, beginning to head towards the door.

Colton would drop by, checking out how his younger brother Chris was doing. It was unlikely his parents would be home, not because it was the middle of the day, but they’d been absent for most of Chris’s and his life. Chris should be home, given he’d quit going to school a month ago. Colton might have stayed away for a year, but he had an old high school buddy keep tabs on his little brother. He raised his fist, knocking a few times. Wood splintered. Colton grimaced, still unused to controlling the strength he inherited.

    No answer from within.

Shutting his eyes, he focused on any sounds using his supernatural hearing. Not even a squeak on the footboards. No one was home. What now? He could hunt his brother down, but he didn’t plan on staying long. That was one of the problems with living in a small town. Despite how much his physical appearance had changed since the bite, townsfolk would recognize him, ask about his disappearance.

The wolf inside him snapped its jaws, making Colton turn. Colton narrowed his gaze. He’d been on the road so long, he’d trained himself never to show his back to potential enemies.

Colton Black, is that you? asked a vaguely familiar voice.

He blinked a few times. Mrs. Grayson?

The widowed and elderly woman who lived across the street from them since he was born took a few certain steps backward. Most humans acted that way around him, as if they sensed a predator in their midst.

Humans. Colton shook his head. He’d been human a year ago, and yet after becoming a monster, he started making that distinction. Colton felt like a fish out of water standing outside his family home, in this neighborhood. He needed to be back on the road, surrounded by trees, endless fields, not surrounded by people.

Prey. Ignoring the sinister voice in his head, he did his best to look non-threatening. Colton smiled, although he had a feeling it looked fake. His voice came out strained. Mrs. Grayson, you scared me.

Mrs. Grayson adjusted the thick glasses on her nose. Colton wondered if that little gesture had been a way to convince herself that the hint of wrongness she’d glimpsed on his face earlier had all been a figment of her imagination.

I’m looking for my brother, he ventured, desperate for a lead. His skin already felt hot, stretched over his bones. Colton wanted to trade this flimsy form for his other one, powerful and unstoppable.

Haven’t you heard? Chris was a casualty in the school shooting two days ago.

His heart beat rapidly. Claws nearly slid out of his hands, but he willed them back and tugged the sleeves of his jacket down.

What? A growl accompanied his voice, but the thought of his little brother lying alone in some hospital bed gutted him. Since they were kids, it had been drilled in his head by his parents that it was his responsibility to look out for Chris.

Where have you been all this while, Colton? Your parents were worried about you. Your brother, he changed drastically after you left.

I need to go, he interrupted, tone clipped. Which hospital?

    St. Ignatius.

Thanks. Colton wasted no time. He took his car and drove to the hospital. After parking his car, he bolted inside, demanding to see his brother.

Colton Black, is that you? asked the woman at the registration desk.

Colton couldn’t waste time on this shit again. My brother. Please. Cassidy, he said, reading her name tag. She was the older sister or cousin of one of his old football teammates, he remembered now. Noticing her staring at the claw marks on his throat he gripped the table. The creak of wood made her blink.

I’m sorry, Chris is on the third floor. ICU unit.

ICU? he whispered. Are my parents around?

They were here earlier if I remember. Let me get you a visitor’s—

Thank you, he managed, then made his way in the elevator.

Colton wished he’d taken the stairs as a group of chattering nurses entered. The tiny space didn’t help. His beast thrashed inside him, ready to rip anything apart. Chris was his responsibility, but after that rabid werewolf bit him, Colton knew he’d be a danger to those around him. Severing those ties and learning, or at least trying, to get a handle on the monster he inherited along with the grisly scars on his throat had been his number one priority.

Regrets didn’t help him. Colton nudged his way past the people in the elevator as he reached the third floor. Colton tracked down his brother immediately. He looked through the glass. Seeing Chris hooked to all those machines drained his spirit. Rage rammed at him. He’d hunt that damn shooter down. All he needed was a scent and he’d tear to pieces that bastard who shot his brother.

Tiny pops made him aware of his hands turning to claws again. His teeth lengthened. His heart started beating fast. No, no. He couldn’t lose
