Dancing With Devils - Francis Owlar

    PREAMBLE

Ihave not come across a people with such a classic living pattern and so carefully arranged in a manner that leaves no room for suspicion. The luo traditional norms are detailed and strictly observed to the letter. Everything seems to fall in place and the elders are see to it that no mistake escapes their attention, and if for whatever reason it does, then the culprit has to face the wrath of the land. The offenders are known to be punished by none other than the masters of the universe. We may not call them demons at the moment but, mark you, they are spirits all the same.

As we know that rules are made by the people and can still be broken by the same, there are those who are entrusted with the laws of the land to stand on behalf of the offenders in a court of law. In this case we have the witches. The latter acts as the mediators between people and spirits. So whoever is found guilty of breaking the rules, quickly contacts the witch and things are soon brought back to order.

The people have lived like this since time immemorial but thank God for Jesus Christ. His name alone brings everything tumbling down and reduced to nothingness. The people who have discovered this know exactly what I am talking about. But still there are those whose plight is still at stake. They are so tightly entangled by these laws that they cannot glimpse at any hope out of their cage. It simply says that all might seem hopeless but the righteous shall live by faith: faith in the only son of God – Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

Following is a brief summary of some of the golden rules that are known to have governed the people in Kenya for centuries.

A HUNCH BACK cannot be buried until the hump is hewn off the victim’s back. The only known reason behind this heartless operation is to stop such misfortunes ever recurring in the family.

A PREGNANT woman is buried only after the foetus is crudely removed. They believe that the grave is entitled to one individual. They will then prepare another grave for the unborn.

A BARREN corpse suffers many pricks of thorns inflicted by her female mourners. The thorns are mercilessly pushed under the feet. As they do this they speak to the corpse, commanding her spirit never to come back and haunt other women in the family by causing the latter to be barren.

ANY GIRL above teenage cannot be buried in her maiden homestead. They believe that girls don’t belong to their parents’ homes. Burying them there will mean that the remaining girls in the family will not get access to marriage proposals.

AN UNINHERITED WIDOW cannot be buried until somebody is hired to lie with her corpse. They believe that the children of the departed will not be productive in their marriage. This follows the trend that when a young man gets a wife, his parents would have to ‘know’ each other before the newly wedded offspring gets to bed in the first night of their honeymoon. This explains why the uninherited widow’s corpse must be given a man before burial.

AN UNFAITHFUL spouse must not hold his/her suckling baby before taking a bath after a mischievous night out. If they do, the baby will definitely contact ‘chira’. This will be explained in the forthcoming chapters.

NO MAN is allowed to shake hands with the mother in-law. They see it as disrespectful to the old lady bearing in mind that this man sleeps with her daughter.

MOTHERS are prohibited from eating chicken in their in-law’s house.

AFTER the burial of a man, the clan observe three days after which the people gather all the cattle, donkeys and dogs. A gang of people drive the flock away out of the homestead as they perform weird dances called TERO BURU.  One of the bulls is slaughtered and the celebration begins. That night, every married member of the bereaved family members have compulsory sex with their spouses.

ANY CHILD born after a recent death is named after the departed in disregard to the gender.

NO COUPLE goes out to plant crops without having sex the previous night. This routine includes harvesting.

A MAN with no son is not qualified to construct a homestead of his own.

THE CORPSE of an estranged wife must be brought back for burial in her former husband’s homestead.

A WIDOWER must experience sexual dream with his departed wife soon after burial of the latter.

A WOMAN whose mother’s dowry was not paid cannot enjoy the same.

ANY MEMBER of a bereaved family is not allowed to spend a night in anybody’s home.

Let’s explore these traditions and rituals further, shall we?

    INTRODUCTION

‘L ooking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith’ (Hebrews 12:2)

I chose the above verse to emphasize the fact that I am determined to live my life by faith in Jesus Christ who started His good work in me. The way He started it is the same way He will come to finish it because I acknowledge Him as the beginning and the end of everything under the sun. He is all in all. He fills up the space with His heavenly goodness. The Bible points it out to all believers that we are no longer of the world. Since we are in Christ, everything about us has been renewed following our faith in Him.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature. All things are passed away behold all things are new (2 Corinthians 5:17).

These two verses give me strength to turn my back away from the strenuous customs of our people. Knowing well that they are not godly, I have no obligation to adhere to any of them because I already know who their author and finisher is: Satan the Devil. I therefore call these traditions SATANIC. Now that I am a new creature in Christ I am being governed by the laws of Christ and not the heathen taboos of the land. I am bound to follow the author and finisher of my newly found faith.

One may want to argue that Christ did not come to finish our traditions and laws as stated in Matthew 5:17-18. The latter is a fluorite verse to all traditionalists, but let us look at this this other way - the Lord in this verse did not mean the traditions of our heathen gods but laws of Moses and the prophets. This is what Jesus came to fulfil. Not the kwers of the luos.

"Think not that I have come to destroy, but to fulfil for verily I say to you, till heaven
