Poems on Love, Loss, and Life
By: Sherrie L. Engram
Dedication
It is my honor to dedicate this book of poetry to my Mother Roselin and Gifted Honors English Teacher Mrs. Kathleen Doyle, two extraordinary women who have shaped and guided my life unto this path.
"One Dream can revolutionize a Nation,
One Smile can outshine the Sun,
And, one Hand can uplift the World."
-Sherrie L. Engram
Foreword
From an early age I possessed a passion for literature and writing was one of my greatest joys. This book is a result of my devotion to poetic expression and represents a snapshot of some of my most prized writings. I hope that you enjoy this heartfelt book of poetry that has been crafted by life experiences that we all can relate to Love, Loss, Joy, and Faith. May you read until your heart is content.
Tin Man
The Tree of Life is withering,
Its roots are now beneath a concrete sea,
Endless fields and meadows of lush green,
Are now the condos of New York City,
The rays of the Sun were once worshipped,
Now, that Power has passed to General Electric!
Vogue says, Gray, is the New Green,
But, that is merely the defense in the criminal case for the Machine;
For the murder of Mother Earth,
But, who will attend her funeral?
When she goes,
We all will go,
With one fatal swift blow,
Not with a bang remember,
Just a whisper,
Or, is it a whimper?
The metal box,
Has taken the soul of humanity,
Has made it possible to communicate from China to the intergalactic galaxy,
Yet, we are still left hollow inside,
Because we all stay behind,
A Micro-soft plasma window,
Where our emotions are even more microscopic,
Between the fields upon fields of fiber-optics!
Give the Tin Man a Heart,
Dorothy says,
But, the question still remains,
Will he take it from Man or Mother Nature instead?
Stolen Sands
The grains run through his hands,
As he looks up at the morning sky,
He curses it,
And then releases a heavy sigh,
How many times has he asked the world to come to an end?
How long must he live in this perpetual agony?
Each day only brings more pain, lashes, and defeat,
How long will they continue to be the ignored majority?
He was ripped from his throne,
Then shipped millions of miles away from home,
Dropped—
Into a New World,
On sands stolen from another man,
Here he is told who to be,
Given their name and forced fed a new identity.
Beaten—
Until black and bloody,
Until being royalty, was merely a dream,
A made up fantasy,
Somewhere distant in the far-off sea,
Of a land he once knew,
A Land, of both Freedom and Truth!
Now,
He is lost among these Stolen Sands,
A mere Puppet, no longer a man,
He jumps,
Before they pull the whip,
His mind has been altered by Willy Lynch,
He sings and dances on their every whim,
All the while dying inside,
Being stripped of both land and pride.
My World
The incandescent glow,
That thee exudes all over,
Has strengthened my love,
Your purity has become the shining light in my life,
No longer are my days cast into night,
I was indeed blessed the day you were made my wife,
But, your love pushes me to the brink of Death,
I cannot stay in perpetual joy and bliss,
While others are tortured with fires and whips.
Oh, My Greatest Love,
You are My World and more,
No one, could ever come above,
Your love beckons me,
As the sand receives the sea,
Yet, here I cannot stay,
Do not cry My Dear,
I must be cruel to be kind,
You will always be in my heart and mind,
But,
