    CHAPTER 1

    Turner in 2006

    GOOOOOD MORRRNING ATLANTA!!!!!!!!!

Turner Thompson’s radio in his Range Rover is tuned to WGIF. The station is a prominent voice for the Christian community in Atlanta. Turner guides the well engineered vehicle through the early morning traffic that is gathering on the north side of the city.

Good morning on this 18th day of July 2006. This is your Christian voice in Atlanta WGIF. Programming made possible by G I F the Gospel Information Foundation. W G I F, the gift in Atlanta.

Turner thinks, I, and the fellows at the office, have a full schedule today, but, I can’t seem to get this phrase out of my mind. It is a time, and times and a half. And this radio station supporter, the Gospel Information Foundation? Maybe it is because I am so involved in the information field that anything that mentions information gets my attention.

I can do some of this computer work at home and maybe I would be able to look at the Bible more. However, the equipment here is only here. The variety and individual pieces of equipment are one of a kind. The technology is state of the art and the art is changing every day. He chuckled to himself; the saying cutting edge is still the best description of the equipment that they are giving us every day.

Turner and his wife Barbara and their two children Turner Jr. and Samantha had attended church services just yesterday.

Turner’s thoughts reflected on his good friend the pastor Rev. Howard Perry Jr. He is Brother Howard to Turner. Brother Howard is in his late sixties. Turner is impressed each time with his speaking ability and his wealth of knowledge that so easily holds his attention. Turner has personal knowledge of his pastor from their many conversations. He was aware of Brother Howard’s past and that even before he came to Atlanta that he was considered to have unusual talent as a speaker and his knowledge of the scripture is legendary.

He sure does keep the attention of this congregation which is no small task when I consider the youthful group of executives, entrepreneurs and professional people that make up our church, Turner surmised. We are very lucky that he decided to return to his home state after his remarkable career of preaching and teaching all over the world.

Turner maneuvered the powerful Range Rover through the morning traffic. The maze of vehicles is just beginning to quicken and multiply.

Turner fit in seamlessly with the aggressive business types in the church. The driver in the car ahead seemed to be distracted and slowed. Turner managed to change lanes. He felt the smooth surge of the engine as he climbed back to the speed limit. The radio played in the background.

Turner knew he was kind of an anomaly at the church. He is, as far as he can tell, the only military officer in the group. He is acquainted with a large number of the men in the church but he is also aware that they do not seem to grasp his military connection. When they ask him what he does he always says that he is an officer in the air force attached to a unit at Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta Georgia.

He noticed from their reaction that they are not familiar with assignments in the military and virtually none of them have served except maybe in ROTC in college or possibly have a father or grandfather that served in the military during wartime.

Turner is fortunate that his work with the Air Force allows him to dress as a civilian except on certain official occasions. He knows it is an asset to be able to blend in easily with them.

Turner’s thoughts reflected on the common area of conversation with his friends at church. He talks with them at ease about computers and all of the technology and amount of information that has become so pervasive in all of their careers. Also his low-key description of himself is intended, due to the nature of his work, to enable him to maintain a low profile.

Yesterday the pastor preached the sermon that had the statement in it that he couldn’t get out of his mind. Turner is still mulling over in the back of his mind the unusual text that Brother Howard used in the homily. Brother Howard referred to the last two chapters of the Book of Daniel. He read the last seven verses of the book and a certain portion of that scripture is the part of the verses that is now buzzing around in Turner’s head.

Huh, he mused, how can those two sets of words have any connection? Let me see, the Gospel Information Foundation and a, time, times and a half? I don’t see any thing that is remotely similar. It could be just my imagination. Oh, well, I have learned to ask the question when I have a question. Lord, let me know about this or let me let it go. Thank you, Amen.

I wonder if at times I am too familiar in my relationship with the Lord. But, I do think that He wants to have a conversation with me. And the only way He can is for me to grow up in Him into a mature spiritual adult. Ok, Lord, when you are ready to answer let me have an ear to hear.

Turner stopped at the gate to the military installation, presented his credentials, waited for the necessary clearance and drove down the virtually empty road to the small cluster of buildings that housed the intelligence agency that is home to Turner and his friends in the highly confidential group. Turner never ceases to be amazed at the simple plain structures that make up the ultra secret facility.

Turner drives the Range Rover easily into his personal parking space. As he gets out Turner is met with the rush of humid heat of the bright July day in Georgia. My, I will never get used to the heat in July especially after traveling twenty or thirty minutes in the comfort of this ride that has the climate controlled insides.

The heavy door of the front entrance moved grudgingly open as Turner used his special card and then pushed against the brass plate. Just inside he saw two of his closest buddies. Thomas Owens had his back to the door. He was the ultimate expert in computer programming. Turner felt that Tom just might be able to communicate with them. I guess, he thought, if anyone could actually talk with one of those machines I guess it would be Tom. He could also talk the language of the average person. A rare quality, but Tom was born and raised in an all black section of the south side of Atlanta. And although he had graduated with honors at Georgia Tech and then finished his doctorate at Cal Tech he at times made you think that he was just some street person. I guess we are a strange collection of characters.

Well Tom is not so strange when I think about Jacob Hoffman. Jake was the one that was talking to Tom when Turner opened the door. When I think that he was born in Jerusalem and was educated at Oxford. He spent ten years inside the intelligence world of Israel, and I feel that they are probably the best informed about world terrorism. I guess because they are forced to know some of what is being planned in order to survive. I wonder at times if our team here measures up to his former associates? I know he tells me that we have the best equipment for surveillance in the world. But I do feel that, from what he has said, that the Jewish operatives on the ground are the most talented and driven of them all. I am very glad he can talk to them and let us in on what they know.

Hello, fellows, what are we doing today?

Oh, hello Turner, said Tom as he turned away from Jake.

Jake spoke up, Turner we have some interesting chatter this morning. Come in here and let Tom tell you the intriguing conversation he has heard from his machines.

You are right about one thing Jake, Tom is on a first name basis with some of them. They all seem to be fighting for his attention.

Ok, y’all come on back but don’t get too friendly with the cute new one. We are just getting acquainted.

Turner followed them past the hum, whirring and various sound tones of the super computers and processors and through the highly charged atmosphere of the place where they listened and looked at the world.

    CHAPTER 2

    Turner Thompson’s Early Life

Edward Turner and his wife Grace lived in Greenville, South Carolina most of their lives. Everybody called him Ed. Ed followed in the footsteps of his grandfather William Thompson, who everybody called Bill, who was a pioneer in the automobile auction business.

Ed settled into his familiar tall chair on the auction stand. He looked at the crowd of auto dealers that filled the three lanes of the facility and spilled out onto the parking lot for the consigned units. He looked across the three lines of vehicles that streamed into the lanes from outside into each lane to be presented before the auction stand for a brief minute. The auctioneer’s melodic chant moved the price to establish a market for that particular car or truck. The buyer’s expert eyes totaled up the amount that they were willing to pay. Each vehicle was sold and then driven out and returned to the holding lot.

Ed listened to the seller tell him in soft tones the price that he wanted to get for the car. Ed looked at the car and his sense of value that had been cultivated as a result of years of selling thousands of vehicles assured him that the seller was not out of line in his price. Ed smoothly shifted from the selling of the previous vehicle and moved into his unique and polished style. The microphone was his friend. He let the precision tuned PA system convey his message to the buyers in his lane. He accepted the bidding with practiced skill. He called the bids and at the time when he was sure that all bids were in he sold the car. The price was acceptable to the seller and the deal was consummated. It all lasted less than 60 seconds.

Ed, along with the other professional auctioneers moved more than five hundred vehicles across the auction block in the three lanes in less than three hours.

It was a very different atmosphere in the office area of the auction company. The air was cool. A quiet that was in contrast to the auction lanes pervaded the spacious office. There were several different venues. The main area was the business space where the sellers and buyers gathered to pay and get paid. A restaurant and lounge area provided refreshments and comfortable seating. A lounge was adjacent for wives, friends, and an occasional dealer that had walked the lot until he was tired.

In the business area clerks waited on the buyers as they paid for their purchases. Other clerks issued checks for payment to the sellers of the same vehicles. Ed’s wife Grace was in charge of the office and although she was able to carry on friendly conversations with the customers she was alert to all that was happening in the busy space. Grace had retired from teaching school. However, she had almost always been an integral part of the family business.

The restaurant area buzzed with conversation and friendly chatter. Ed’s mom, along with Graces mom seemed to have always been the ones that controlled that part. They served up sandwiches and drinks and pleasant small talk. They maintained a close relationship with the customers who came to them to eat, visit and to hear their timeless wisdom.

Turner was Ed and Graces only child. He was born October 12, 1966. Turner grew up in the atmosphere and excitement of the auction. He learned the subtleties of the business at an early age. His middle name was Nathan. Turner Nathan Thompson, but everyone called him Turner.

Nathan was a Bible name but he seldom used the name and most everyone called him Turner. However, as was common in the south, when his mother was a little agitated with him or called him for something of consequence she would use both names. When he heard her call Turner Nathan he knew that he was in some manner of trouble or that she surely wanted his attention.

Turner was born into this family whose life included being acquainted with many people on a social basis as a result of the nature of the auction business. The dealers that attended the weekly auctions all felt that they knew Ed, Grace, their moms, the clerks, auctioneers, and Turner personally. Turner was used to being called by name by dozens of the business friends. He enjoyed the association and friendships.

The family also has strong religious ties. The family is the founder and supporter of the church they attended. The city of Greenville is in the heart of the

Bible belt, and is known for the many Baptist, Methodist and Pentecostal churches which dominate the area. Holmes Bible Seminary is over 100 years old and is the oldest continually operated Pentecostal school in the world. Bob Jones University is a bastion of fundamental and conservative Christian teaching. Furman University is a fine institution of higher learning that is closely associated with the Baptist Organization. Presbyterian College is another church related college in the area. It is almost impossible for Turner to not be influenced and be at least knowledgeable of the deep Bible teachings expounded during this time when his character is being formed.

Turner is an exceptionally bright child with obvious gifts in the area of science. He is fascinated with astronomy, electronics and the pure beauty of the mathematics that under girds these areas of study. Turner grows to be a good looking teenager with sandy hair and a lean athletic build.

He plays all of the different sports in high school. But he is especially skilled and interested in baseball. Turner enjoyed playing baseball and sharing with his teammates. He enjoyed the skill positions of middle infielder and center field. In his senior year he settled in at centerfield and had a fine defensive season at that position along with being an accomplished leadoff batter.

Turner enjoyed the attention of the college baseball coaches that he met. He was in San Antonio, Texas to visit a school there.

Out of curiosity Turner asked the coach, How did you know about me?

Turner was intrigued to here him say, Well, Turner, I have a friend that coaches at Columbia University in New York City and he mentioned you to me.

Turner asked in amazement, How did a coach in New York know anything about me?

Well, he told me that he saw you play in Iowa. He said that you were playing in the Junior Olympics with a team from Georgia, is that right?"

Yes, He said, "I hate to be inquisitive but, do you mean that you coaches talk
