    Purpose

I imagine most writers struggling with a common question. How do I begin? I remember wrestling for weeks with the best way to start. I had most of this book completed except for the very beginning. I wanted to come up with an interesting start that might peak the interests of the readers and compel them to read more of the book. One night, I prayerfully asked God how I should start this book and His answer has stuck with me to this day. Just like this. How simple…and yet… somehow it wasn’t. I didn’t understand, so I asked for clarification, What do you mean, just like this? God replied, Just like this: A story. Start your book by telling them how you were lying in bed asking Me how to start this book and the answer I gave you; just like this. So here we are, at the beginning. Just like that!

There was never a question of whether I was going to write this book or not. Several years ago, when God asked me to write a book based on my life’s experiences and the direct impact obeying His directions has had on me, I started without hesitation. I didn’t start writing this book because I was starting my third round of unemployment in just three years and I had time on my hands. I wrote it for one reason – God told me to. Yes, during one of my conversations with Him, He clearly directed me to write this book. I was a little concerned because I had never written a book before; however, I understood one thing - when God tells me to do something, I need to do it.

This somewhat daunting assignment from God caused me to reflect upon my life’s journey over the past few years. I remember having conversations with Him and realizing later that everything He told me had come to pass. Seemingly impossible or downright silly things God would tell me actually happened. For example, only two months after starting a new job, God told me I would not need a resume for my next job. I was confused because He had completely caught me off guard, especially since I just started a new job. Sure enough, a mere two years later, I was asked to take a senior position at another company and was never asked for my resume. Getting a senior position in a company without ever showing a resume is not an every day occurrence, but nothing is impossible with God.

The more I listened to His guidance, the deeper my trust in Him grew. The more I followed His directions, the more He would speak to me. The more God spoke to me, the closer to Him I became. As I became closer to God, I sought His help more often, followed His direction, and grew in intimacy with Him. It is this process that is the basis for this book - know God, hear God, trust God. The more we know Him, the easier it is to know when He is guiding us. The more we trust and follow God’s directions, the more He tells us. Basically, it all comes down to our heart. When we truly love others, we long to spend time with them, listen to them, and do things that please them because we love them. The more love we have in our hearts for God, the more we will want to be with Him and do those things that are pleasing to Him. It is definitely a matter of the heart.

To receive all of what God has to offer, we must get closer to Him. Think about God and what having a close relationship with Him would be like. Walking and talking with God who knows everything about everything, from the beginning to the end, and knows what you have done and what you will do. Just the idea of having a personal relationship with the creator of the universe can be mind-blowing. Walking and talking with God can sound crazy, but that’s exactly what He wants us to do. God wants to have a close relationship with us right now, and He is simply waiting for us to desire it as well.

The concepts in this book (know God, hear God, and trust God) are simple to understand; however, they are not always as easy to implement in our lives. Therefore, this book includes many personal stories to help make the information more meaningful and easier to apply. I’ve also included references from the ultimate source of God’s wisdom and knowledge – the Bible. As you read this book, I pray that God opens your eyes of understanding, and teaches you how to take your relationship with Him to the next level. Aim Higher.

    My Testimony

Experience an event firsthand and you become a witness — someone who can provide testimony. I am a witness to what obeying and trusting God can do, which led to my writing this book. As I mentioned earlier, I was unemployed three times in three years. God used each round of unemployment to teach me: who He was, what kind of relationship He desired, and how He would direct my life through that relationship. During my first round of unemployment I focused only on myself and the need to find another job. I prayed to God for help in finding a job, but I really did nothing for the kingdom of God. The second time, the Lord led me to develop the AIM class, which is designed to give those who are unemployed or mis-employed a biblical approach to finding a job. The third time I was unemployed, I wrote this book based on the principles I share in the AIM class. It has been a long and exciting journey and I would like to share some the highlights with you.

One of the most exciting days of my life was on Friday, July 21, 2000. I’ll never forget that day for as long as I live. At 11:30 a.m., my wife, who was at the end of her maternity leave, sent an e-mail message to her employer stating she was not returning to work. We decided that she would stay at home to care for our new baby because my income was sufficient to meet our financial needs. At 3:30 p.m. that same day, my boss called to tell me my company had a headcount reduction and my head was one of those reduced! Within four hours we went from two incomes… to none.

To put things in perspective, I had no job and no income, plus a wife and one-month-old son who were depending on me. I freaked out! If I had stopped to think about it, yes I would have realized we would be okay, because we had money in the bank, and I could go out and get another job. However, I ran upstairs and started shaking my sleeping wife to wake her up. Had you been there to see her, you would have thought she was waking from a coma as she slowly got up rubbing her eyes, stretching, and yawning as I spoke to her. Honey! Honey! Wake up! Wake up! Call your boss and tell him you want your job back! I’m going crazy because we have a new baby and no income, and she is just taking her sweet time like there’s not a worry in the world. She then says, My boss lives far from the office, and he is probably already on his way home to beat the Friday rush hour traffic. I said, So what! Call his cell phone! Call his house! Call someone right now! Don’t you understand? We have NO INCOME! At this point my wife is looking at me like I’m some kind of
