Remembering Helen
From Me To You
If you were fortunate enough to have a grandmother when growing up, you might remember her personal attention and wisdom. Grandmothers could do no wrong, and were always counted on for wise counsel.
Growing up in Wisconsin, I remember my grandmother being an inspiration to me. She dispensed life-affirming advice and tips for success as she prepared so many delicious meals in her kitchen.
Recently, while going through a trunk of Grandmother’s, with its cache of yellowed newspaper clippings and family photos, I discovered a small cookbook containing some of her favorite sayings. Many of these surely had their origins long ago, while others she wrote from her own experience. Perhaps you might recognize a few, having heard them in your own family when you were growing up.
As I read these wise recipes for success, they brought back the special times when Grandmother shared them as I sat by her old oaken table, her insights as readied as her stirring spoons, measuring cups, and baking pans. Like so many of her methods, her practicality, common sense, and knowledge seemed to have defied time. Thus these recollections have become the premise for this book.
My hope is that Grandmother’s sayings and my reactions to them will be of value to you today, whether in your busy pursuits, at your work, at your home, or at school. I suggest that you refer to Grandmother’s wisdom often, and by taking the time to complete the Personal
Renewal Planner that follows each recipe, the process will help you find your own guidelines for continued success, no matter what age or stage in life. I know that Grandmother would be pleased.

Enjoy Each Slice of Life
Savor the challenge
Grandmother baked wonderful apple pies, and as a youngster I spent many an hour watching her create these taste treats in her kitchen. I remember her peeling fresh apples, sprinkling the sugar, sifting flour, preparing the dough with her rolling pin, and adding just enough spice to the ingredients. One day it was time for a sample. She carefully took it from the oven and cut the golden crust, looked at me and said, Make sure you enjoy each slice of life as much as the slices of my pie.
I asked for some clarification. She said it was important to know what your life was about, and those insights would come as you matured. She then placed a piece of her pie with its wonderful aroma before me, and told me that each segment of my life would be like a slice of her pie. Each would be a time-frame for achievement, and you had to plan
