About this ebook
As an exhibiting artist, his works have been shown and collected in Europe, Asia and the United States. Currently he is most active/exhibiting with the American Color Print Society, and The Plastic Club.
Currently living with his wife, Odetta, in Philadelphia, PA. he has expanded his travels across America and his deepened
experiences and awareness. Both poems and the art works are thematic with a strong relationship between the works. There is
a shared pictorial approach: strong bold colors paralleling bold rhythmic explorations: Sy Hakim is a humanist, interested ina diverse civility and the ethic search into the story of myriad civilizations and religionshe fulfills the obligations of his subject and formsa validity combined to sustain his expressionistic
(humanistic and poetic) concept [S. Maugeri, Italian critic]
His artistic-poetic production, the work, the essence, hopefully reveals in its variation of themes, and symbolic- expressionistic
quality, a life reverence: the ambiguity of life and the imminence of time.
Sy Hakim
He and Odetta Roverso were married in Vicenza , Italy in 1970. Sy Hakim earned his MA in American Studies at New York University (1960) and continued graduate studies at various universities. Maugeri, Italian Critic] Sy Hakim is an American Artist and Poet who has lived much of his life in Italy. This accounts for the many classical allusions one find in his works, both art and poetry. City Flowers
City flowers, grown, uncut
roses and vibrating colors –
reds and brilliant yellows,
upward exuberance thrust
amidst green stalks and thorns:
flung between the buttresses,
the building’s ruins
and brick remains
a boy’s joy, contagious
beyond the low wall.
There was a building, here
collapsed, now a lot
an almost empty spare space,
big city abandoned,
flat and sprinkled dirt
scattered with pebbles and stones,
detritus – remnants –
with dark dank dirt mixed:
beneath red sun and motif,
motives of Spring
among ruins of collapse,
hopes amidst relapse –
a boy, arms raised laughter
and vibrant roses grown.
Before The Bridge
Before the bridge,
crossing
amber time, held
preserved, perceived
blinking caution – pause:
waiting at the bridge
imponderable memories,
life as memories – paused;
life as the utilization,
choices crossing;
bridge, gap
time, delay;
choice is the utilization,
fruitilization,
sum of the accidental.
Within memories’ choices
pause, stop, select,
step, go:
hesitating step,
go, stop, pause – go
with the blinking amber;
lights slide into motion,
commotion of lights – glide –
alternating with steps,
hesitating – echoes –
time gap
beneath tower base
and rising steel,
curving
cables and silent emotion…
Memories glide, slide,
a hesitation,
a visitation-
bridge gap
a time delay;
start with a stutter-step:
initiate a control,
colors – spinning
beyond control – cascading
life as memories’ choices –
no choice –
before the bridge,
alternating before, between
blinking choices and lights
and
