PREFACE
Remember kid, heroes get remembered but legends never die.
The Sandlot
The difference between a Hero and a Legend is simple; we remember Heroes, talk about them and even write about them. They are immortalized for great deeds, becoming part of history for their accomplishments. Even so, as time goes by, those memories fade, and although they are documented in the annals of history, the emotions of the moment are never truly re-captured.
Legends, however, are larger than life. They transcend the bounds of humanity becoming super human. Legends are cultural icons, greater than great. While Heroes are remembered forever in our minds, Legends truly never die. They are kept alive, passed down from generation to generation with vivid detail, energy and enthusiasm that keep them with us forever.
And so it was for the 2008 Olmsted Falls Bulldog Volleyball Team as they set out to become legends. Their quest was to do something great, something that would be talked about maybe forever. And so, the quotation at the top appeared on the back of their practice shirts, selected by the Seniors as a reminder of their purpose for the season. Every practice, each player could read that quote, written in gold on the backs of their teammates’ dark blue practice jerseys. When things got tough, when the work, the effort, the journey strained every fabric of their being, those golden words stood out even more boldly against the sweat-drenched backs, pulling them to the finish line.
As it is with anything great, this voyage would not be easy; if it were, there would be no story.
Fortunately, there is a story.
This book is in part, the story of their journey, a thirteen-month race to capture a dream. The story of their effort is a good one; it is enjoyable and, in and of itself, a motivational one. It would make a great Disney Movie, but since I didn’t know anyone at Disney and couldn’t afford to produce the movie myself, I decided to write about it instead.
I was fortunate enough to experience the events of that season first hand, and as I started to write this book, I realized that the real story was not what they accomplished, but how they accomplished it. What they did from beginning to end was a perfect step-by-step blueprint of how to get things done, how not only to chase a dream, but how to catch a dream. The principles this team applied to their season were the same principles behind every great story of achievement. The 2008 Lady Bulldogs’ story provided a perfect backdrop to not only share the concepts behind achieving your dreams, but to make them jump off the page and come alive as they actually happened that season.
As I worked through this book, I realized something else: I was not just writing about a team chasing their dream, but I was chasing a dream. Publishing a book has long been a personal goal of mine. I have spent hours wandering through my own thoughts, creating stories that would translate into a book, then into a movie. I’ve written action adventure, drama and even romance in the hopes of making the jump to the silver screen. But, the movies never happened, probably because each idea was tucked safely away in my head, never even making it to a piece of paper.
I don’t recall exactly when it hit me, but at some point, the idea just hit me; this would be the story behind my book, and I could take the next twenty or thirty years to write it. However, I made one mistake – I told someone about it. That was it, the horse had left the barn, the cat was out of the bag; I was on the hook. Word spread and people asked about it. Now, I had to do it.
I knew I was capable of writing this book. The trick, as I soon learned, was writing a book people would actually read and when the last page was turned, felt that the time invested was well spent. So, I got to work, and soon found my ego being bruised by the challenge of this task. While bouncing between time to do it, experiencing binges of pure creativity and hours of significant writer’s cramp, there was one constant on my mind, I HAD TO COMPLETE THIS BOOK. QUITING WAS NOT AN OPTION.
With every completed page, the long road to making this dream a reality was in my rearview mirror, and the finish line was drawing closer. I was going to do this; I could feel it. Not only that, the message from each chapter rang true in my head. I could not write about it without living it. I could not convey the passion behind the ideas if I did not believe them. But I do believe in them, and I do live them. I put pen to paper, followed my own advice and
