Evyenia Karmi started dancing as a small child learning the traditional dance of her family. She has appeared in film and television; training includes the community adult ballet program at the National Ballet School of Canada, and The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Evyenia performs internationally as a member of CID-Unesco in Greece. She lives and teaches in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The first time I experienced a live bellydance performance was in a Greek nightclub in Greenwich Village in New York City. At the time, I was a teenager from a small factory city in Canada and very much involved in the arts, including dance, so this was a very eye-opening experience. A few decades later, two things stand out in my memory: the energy and excitement that consumed all the club patrons when the bellydancer energetically glided onto the club floor through a myriad of tables, and the overwhelming beauty of the dance and the dancer.
I was completely mesmerized with the finger cymbals keeping to the beat of the music, the allure of the body dressed in layers of colourful silk, the smiling and seductive face, and the controlled movements of the bellydancer’s body. I could only imagine what it would be like to know who this mysterious woman was with all her feminine charms. Bellydancers are seductive and mysterious creatures who fascinate Westerners with this Eastern Mediterranean dance.
But that was then and this is now. Bellydancers gracefully express their femininity in dance and movement and strike up the feeling of a never-ending awe among a much broader audience now that consists of men, women, and children. They are no longer limited to clubs. Bellydance shows are now much more common in theatres, restaurants, and family gatherings. Even so, we are all still mesmerized by the rhythms, contortions, and excitement of these performers draped in veils. They are as mysterious
