Foreword
This is Nick Armbrister’s first volume of poetry from his ten years of writing (1996—2006). It contains both old and new poems on several types of subject matter—from life and love to Goth and war. The poems express his views and his unique creativity; his love of Gothic music, aircraft, the written word and weird girls inspire him and the end result is here. He wrote his poetry while in a variety of moods. Volume 2 will follow in the future with more of his poetry.
For people who say poetry is a Victorian genre and has no appeal today, that today is the age of the internet and trash novels, he has this to say: Go to your local bookshop, go to the poetry section and have a look. Buy a book and read it—show the world that poetry is alive and well. Even better, pick up a pen and write a poem: one day you may even have a book out!
Nick has always been drawn to the weird and wonderful, and his poetry consti- tutes his small addition to this. The poems are simple and lasting, and make a graphic and startling impact that invariably cuts like broken glass.

TEAR
I am a black diamond with a dark flaw so deep in my heart it can never be healed. Will this inconsistency be my downfall or my saviour? I will not know until my fate is in the balance. Now I don’t know. I weep silent tears and pray to my pagan gods and goddesses to release me, to let my end be right now. Judge me on my actions.
I stand before the northern sky; black, it is, a gulf between me and the heavens, only an illusion. Is it me or am I it? There is an understanding somewhere but not here, not now. How many other dark souls are like me in this tortured and cracked universe which has no name, just a feeling that is as old as time, as old as our consciousness?
We are the generation of the damned, forever so until our end, until the circle runs straight and we are no more. Cracked diamonds forever failing…
GENERATION ZERO
We are the generation zero, born without a hero.
Waiting, waiting for it to happen, caught without a weapon.
To you I turn in my hour of need, part of the same creed.
Our leaders fail us and fill their pockets, building nuclear rockets.
What can we do but run from this zoo?
Generation zero, generation zero, caught against the trap of a material world.
March and unite in a display of being bold
Generation zero, generation zero, throw away teenagers burnt in the fire,
as their parents choke in their children’s funeral pyre.
Watch and learn, be by my side, we can swallow our foolish pride.
Into the war we venture, unafraid to fall.
If the devil dogs get us, join me and be my evenfall.
England cries as her folk party and trip,
On make believe happiness, the Devil’s whip.
This is the fire of President Blair’s treachery,
an experiment of hypocrisy.
Soon no one will be left, except me and you.
Can we be strong and come out true?
Generation zero, generation zero, caught against the trap of a material world.
March and unite in a display of being bold.
Generation zero, generation zero, throw away teenagers burnt in the fire,
as their parents choke in their children’s funeral pyre.
The system has failed us and has now broken our backs;
now the enemy follows in our tracks
to hunt us down and take our lives in a frenzy of death.
Stand with me and fight to the last, become my heroine of the earth.
Together in slow motion we fall,
fallen souls against it all.
Generation zero, generation zero, generation zero…
LEGACY
Be my legacy through the ages,
I call your name not knowing who you are or if you exist in my time and space.
I know we have met before, now lost memories turned to dust.
I live on my own, a dark shadow in a chaos-driven world.
Soon we’ll meet, when I can’t say, tomorrow, or in a thousand years,
you are my legacy that I wait patiently to find.
SOUL
A tortured soul is mine from the depths of my pain to the realms of time.
How am I to live with this endless melancholy?
I cry out, a silent scream, for no one is listening to my hurt and loss.
I am alone, total isolation.
I look up at the dark menacing bulk of the mountains and I feel one with the
huge sleeping monolith—loneliness, despair, pain—a dark gothic beauty in silent
suffering.
Soon I have to go back to the surreality of society but for now I’m left alone on
the northern moors. They take my pain away and cleanse my misguided soul.
REAP THE WHIRLWIND
Thou has hurt me and betrayed me, thou has contrived with my enemy and
fucked him. When thee fucked him did thee show no regret or remorse for thy
actions?
Or did thee smile with glee and laugh behind my back?
I will pay you back equal pain, I will show you what it is like to be hurt and
deceived.
Thee will take to the hill and abandon thy life through shame, damned to the end
of time…
