      Sitting across her girlfriends at the Spezia restaurant in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Marie could not help but realize that she was the only one, whom marriage had dealt a hard blow. Her girlfriends were all married, but they seemed to be enjoying their marriage because they looked better. It probably did not help that they had jobs and could earn money for themselves, whereas she had to depend on Todd for everything down to her sanitary pads.

      I married you to take care of my family, not prance around town, pretending to work. Todd had told her after a slap to her face, when she had raised the issue of getting a job.

      When was the last time you shopped for yourself? Sally began.
