About this ebook
If you already know the value of experiencing the Ring operas, you can buy Notes Compared With Charles for someone who will be a first-timer.
There is no other live performance like Wagner's Ring cycle: no stage play, no other opera, no rock concert, no IMAX film, no tour through a theme park, no home entertainment center sensory flood.
The Wagner Ring is a profoundly complex work on its face and can become even more interesting depending on who is interpreting what Wagner wrote. As long as individuals approach the Ring with their own senses, it can remain a mighty portrait of passionate characters, available for identification, empathy and awe, regardless of the production.
Buy this companion book to go with the Ring stories that you'll find inside the opera program describing the saga in full.

Prologue
As a note to you, dear reader, I offer this version of my first experience with the Wagner Ring, four operas with musical and lyrical majesty that are especially appealing to people who love stories and who feel a kinship for classical music. This is a companion work to an opera program where you will find the detailed stories of each opera written out by the opera company producers.
If someone has given you this book as a gift, know that a great affection for you is part of this gesture. Passing along the experience of seeing the Ring for the first time is a lovely notion that every true Wagnerite wants to share with others for whom a special connection either exists or could exist. Please accept it with love and affection from both of us.
Notes Compared With Qharles
Someone to talk with during the Wagner Ring, what a treat.
Both Charles and I responded positively when Berta, our mutual friend suggested an introduction. When Charles called, announcing his name, I spoke quickly. I’m glad to hear from you, Charles. Thanks for calling.
This will be fun. Which cycle are you attending?,
he asked, in his slight, charming accent.
The one staring August 2, how about you?
I wrapped the coils of the telephone cord around my finger, feeling a little anxious.
August 6th, I think.
I looked at the Seattle performance schedule. That’s not possible it’s either the 2nd or the 9th. There isn’t a performance on the 6th.
My comment may have put him off, and after a noticeable pause, he responded. I’d better check with my travel agent about the dates. I’m quite certain it’s the 6th, though. Let me call you back tomorrow.
We hung up.
My first encounter with Charles confused me. Bellevue lies only eleven miles from the Seattle Opera House. Berta had told me that Charles flew helicopters and owned several cars. None of this fit the notion that he needed a travel agent to organize his route to the Seattle Opera House.
Replaying his certainty in my head, I realized, of course, there must be other Ring cycles on the planet besides those staged each summer in Seattle, Washington. Then it hit me: I knew the Santa Fe Opera company produced a complete Ring cycle; of course, that’s it.
The next morning, I stood at my desk and phoned Charles, announcing proudly, "I’ve solved the puzzle. You’re going to
