    I’m not supposed to hold my breath on spacewalks, but I do it anyway.

    Yeah, I know the reasons I shouldn’t. Holding my breath makes the heart work harder, then increases respiration when I do breathe and all that kind of thing.

    But here’s my logic – when it’s just my puffy white suit between my tender life and the unforgiving frozen vacuum of space, I like to listen to the suit. Geraldine says that’s just proof that I’m crazy, that the suit makes no noise when no one’s on the com.

    But she’s wrong. It’s like … it’s like the echo of a hum. Faint. Barely there. But reassuring. Like when I was a little kid. I could have been playing with my toy cars in the living room while my mom was reading the paper in the kitchen, but I felt just a little safer hearing that faint rustle of paper when she turned the page. The little non-sounds she made while reading.

    She was there. I wasn’t alone. And the suit, it’s here for me
