Mike Haszto

Mike Haszto will be turning sixty-two in this year of 2021. He still resides in North Ridgeville, Ohio, although this native of Islip, Long Island, New York still dreams of a house on the beach somewhere between the Outer Banks and Key West. A tent may have to do. Mike’s adventures still take him on journeys for childhood cancer through the Great Cycle Challenge. This will be Mike’s fourth year riding for the kids who should be living life and not fighting for it. You can donate at: www.greatcyclechallenge.com/Riders?MikeHaszto Each passage of time has taken him into various directions and hobbies…whether the radio industry, footgolf, golf, hockey, etc, but some things remain the same…his love of coaching hockey (31+ years), his love of writing (14 novels and 6 poetry books), his love of being a Parrothead (45+ years) and the escapism of the lifestyle and music of Jimmy Buffett, his intense obsessions with the New York Mets and Islanders, and his love of Joyce and family.

    Foreword

On this beautiful day in May 2009, I can’t help but vision the past ten days of vacation. Blessed with great friends and family, and with a sense of adventure, I celebrated my fiftieth birthday living a dream come true.

A surprise party brought together so many close friends in celebration and good times, as well as children who have scattered themselves in their adventures in life whether through career, college or both. It was truly incredible to sit and chat with everyone, telling stories of many years ago as well as the present. Reliving those memories were humbling, fun, usually ending with large amounts of belly laughter and red faces. It was just the start.

It’s no secret I hold Key West, Long Island, palm trees, beach, ocean and anything associated with those visions of paradise in the highest regard. For nine days of vacation, I was able to live just that.

Through my best friend, Kevin, we ventured down to Key West, attaining many firsts for an old guy like myself. Yes, I had the opportunities of being there several times, and loving each trip made. But there were so many things not experienced for whatever reasons previously, and I felt like a child in a candy store as the smallest plane I’ve ever ridden in was ready to touch down at Key West International Airport. Okay, so with my being afraid of flying and claustrophobic, this twin propeller, nineteen seat plane finally made me at ease with my nerves and phobias just as we were to set down on this tropical island that I had never seen from the sky. Awesome were the views from above.

For lack of a better word, awesome now has become the designated word for this Foreword.

The views were awesome. The flight in our miniature plane was highlighted by the sight of the Endeavor space craft and its liftoff. Awesome. Okay, so from the western side of Florida it looked more like a fireworks rocket going up, but work with me here. The vision of knowing what it was…was…well…awesome. Hitting every slight bit of turbulence and feeling my insides twist was not exactly awesome, but there must be sacrifices made to attain a status of ‘awesome’ I believe.

Key West was everything I remember and more. Eighty five degrees and sunny. Awesome. Palm trees everywhere. Awesome.

Smather’s Beach. Awesome. Old Towne Duval Street. Awesome.

We walked the island so many times over, and also got scooters two days, another first. Awesome. A round of golf at the Key West Golf Club…where there were as many huge lizards and baby ducks as our shot count. Truly awesome. A jet ski tour that was ninety plus minutes of nerve racking paradise and adventure…again, a first and…awesome. Well, until my jet ski died on me in four to six foot waves in the Atlantic, but it was alls well in the end. I definitely wouldn’t trade in the experience for anything else! Two hours on the radio doing a remote with WIIS FM (Island 107) was indeed awesome as well…with some ideas being generated for the third installment of my
