PREFACE
BEWARE THE CURE-ALL
Long before there was Viagra, there were Goat Glands. In 1918, a man in Milford, Kansas, named John R. Brinkley offered a miracle cure to men and women who had lost their get up and go
. For a mere $750.00, Dr.* Brinkley would transplant testicular glands of goats into men’s scrotums or women’s abdomens. Because the goat was an obviously virile animal (think of Pan of Greek mythology), its gonads would help the patient enjoy the fullness of life again.
Most people didn’t die from infection after the surgery, but many did. If a patient did experience renewed vim and vigor, it was probably caused by sheer hope . It had nothing to do with the foreign body that had been implanted. The body just absorbed it like so much bacteria. The procedure was also touted to cure twenty-seven other ailments ranging from dementia to emphysema to flatulence. It didn’t fix those problems either.
Regardless of how effective Brinkley’s cure-all was, people flocked to him. He made enormous amounts of money selling his caprine cure. He bought two radio stations, ran for governor of Kansas twice, and went down in history as either an advertising genius or one of the greatest charlatans of all time. Or both.
This book has very little in common with Mr. Brinkley’s claims. First of all, it does not involve goats. It also does not promise anything. It suggests that one change in your diet might cure the health issue you are facing right now.
But it might not.
We live in a society that has been duped and cheated so much that many of us have developed a deep sense of skepticism. While disbelieving everything you hear is a little neurotic, a good dose of healthy questioning is sometimes a good thing. The victims of Hinkley’s surgery could have saved money, hassle, and embarrassment if they had been a little more wary of his claims.
This book uses the words might
a lot, instead of will
. That means that the ideas in it might not have any bearing on you and your health issues at all. Your illness might not have anything to do with your diet. Following the advice in here might not help you get any closer to a cure or reliable treatment.
But, then again, it might.
One of the reasons we decided to make the book short and cheap is that it can’t promise new health to everyone who might buy it. If you are among those people for whom it’s not helpful, you’re only out a few bucks. You spent some time learning a bit about how your body works, and you came away with some interesting facts to share at parties. Nothing lost. You and your doctor will have to keep looking.
If the ideas in this book do apply to you, and it turns out that the advice opens up new doors to recovery, then yippee! The small investment was well worth it. You can read the rest of the book, which includes ideas on how to continue from here. You and your doctor can start making real progress.
The authors of this book each have their own specialty. Dr. Liz Mussin knows about medicine. She has a real medical degree from Michigan State University and has been practicing medicine for over 15 years. Mr. Mark Phillips knows how to teach and how to write. He has taught literature, writing, and other fun things like drama for many years to students in almost every grade from 12th down to 2nd.
The process the two authors
