About this ebook

At age sixteen Peter Wohlfelder III became an overseas missionary with the Island Missionary Society. As he sat before a board of older pastors, ministers, and missionaries, some of whom were graduates of seminaries, they were reluctant to accept him to the mission field at his young age. Dick Kay (the head missionary with the IMS for the work in the Bahamas), after working with Peter in the ministry, urged the missionary board to accept Peter as a full-time missionary. What happened next is history. This book will tell how a young teenager answered the call of the Lord on his life, how he walked into a dangerous neighborhood in the early 1970's (where the local police were afraid to go) and how lives were miraculously touched by the hand of God. Many of these young men who were gang members and drug addicts on the streets of Nassau, mightily came to the Lord, and today are pastors, ministers, and successful businessmen. One such young man who was a drug dealer in Nassau came one night to kill Peter while he was ministering on the streets, met with Peter face to face and gave his life to the Lord in an encounter that will be retold in this book. Today this man is now a leading builder and land developer in the Bahamas and several other countries, provides financing for the building of churches, and is active in a marriage ministry in his church.

This book will tell how God shook the streets of Nassau through a young teenager who reached out to those in the bondage of drugs and darkness with the light of the gospel.

    DEDICATION OF THIS BOOK

This book is dedicated to Rev. Richard Kay who has labored diligently in the islands of the Caribbean, and he paved the way for me to come there and minister; and to Larry, my fruit in the work of the Lord and my good friend; and in memory of Wilford, who stood by my side while I ministered in Nassau.

This book is also dedicated to Alan Pomper. I would like to extend a special thank you to Alan for being with me on my first and second missionary journeys, and for his music ministry; for the adventures we had on New Providence Island, on South Andros, and the waters of the Caribbean; and for his friendship through the years. Alan was a vital part of this ministry and the resulting fruit.

A special thank you goes out to the Suncoast Ministries for their help in preparing me for the ministry, and for their support while I lived in the Bahamas.

In appreciation to the Island Missionary Society for accepting me as a full-time missionary at the young age of sixteen, back in March of 1974.

To Pastor Ed Godet, Pastor Lionel, his brother Khatee, Jolly, Freddie, Winston, Hammy, Chris, Arlington, and to all my Bahamian friends, thank you.

A special thank you to all the Bahamians who were so good to me while I lived in the islands of the Bahamas, and to those who gave me peas and rice to eat. Thank you.

    My Childhood

    CHAPTER ONE

T he earliest memory of my childhood is when I would lay in my crib at night. Before being able to stand or even think in terms of words, I remember being intrigued by what I saw around me. I had several rubber toys in my crib, one being a blue rubber house that I used to like laying on top of my chest when I went to sleep. I remember my mom lovingly laying me in my crib at night; and from the dawn of my earliest memories, I remember being in a home surrounded with love by my parents and the sense of a good peaceful presence.

One of the earliest and clearest memories of my dad is when he saved my life. I remember crawling around on the floor and finding some marbles. I sat up on the floor and put one in my mouth. Soon, I could not breathe. I could not cry or make any sounds. I could not pass any air. I simply was sitting there suffocating. This is as clear in my memory as if it happened yesterday. My dad must have seen me turning blue sitting by the marbles. He came over to me, picked me up by my ankles with one of his hands, suspended me upside down in mid-air over the floor, hit me in my upper back with a blow from his other hand, and the marble popped out.

Another clear and early memory of my dad was when he was showing me how to print my name. This was no easy task since my name is Peter John Wohlfelder III.

My dad was on the Detroit Police Department for twenty-five years. He started as a policeman walking a beat on the streets of downtown Detroit. He later became a detective. Much of his time was spent on the homicide squad. He retired as a lieutenant. My mom was a stay-at-home mom/housewife. My dad attended college prior to his career and my mom graduated from an all girls’ Catholic high school, The Shrine of the Little Flower, in Detroit. My mom told me how the main priest there was well known for a program he had on the radio. We lived in Dearborn Heights, Michigan.

I was baptized at Saint Linus Catholic Church and this is where my family went to church (my parents, my two older sisters, and I).

I remember a prayer my mom taught me when I was very young, that we would say before we went to bed at night: Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.

One of my clearest memories of my preschool years is how I used to be fascinated with space. My dad bought a model of the planets and sun of our solar system. I remember spending time musing on the thought of space. How space probably had no end, and if it did have an end, then what would be on the other side of the end—if you could keep going and going in space and if you did finally reach a black wall, then what would be on the other side of that black wall. I spent quite a bit of time thinking about this as a child.

My dad planted a large cornfield behind our house. The stalks of corn were about three times my height. I remember as a young child how much I liked to walk and explore deep into this cornfield being surrounded by stalks and ears of corn.

I never will forget when I was a very young child (before school age), I found out that there was no Santa Claus; as a result I said to my mom, Then is God real? My mom looked at me with a very firm look and said with all confidence, Yes, God is real. I will never forget the mixture of love and firmness in her eyes.

I attended Catholic school when I was young. I am very thankful for this foundation and training. As a child this instilled in me a profound faith and reverence for God. They taught how God created all things, that Christ came to earth and
