    Preface

The art of truck driving: many of you are probably saying there is no art to truck driving. Anybody can do it. Although anyone who wishes to drive can learn, there is a major difference between somebody who just drives a truck and somebody who takes pride in what she or he does. As proof of that, take a good look around, and you will see two different kinds of truck drivers.

Driver Number One drives a fairly new company truck with bunk extenders bent, crooked steps on the side; and loose mirrors because it has been hit. True, the driver is getting the truck up and down the road, but at what cost to the company? This driver will be forever changing companies, always starting a new job, and never getting ahead.

Driver Number Two, on the other hand, drives a truck that is four or five years old and still looks brand new. This driver takes pride in his work, whereas driver number one just does his job with little or no interest. The attitude is the difference. If you ask Driver Number One what happened to his truck, he will tell you that someone cut him off and caused him to have an accident. It is always someone else’s fault. Driver Number Two will have fewer accidents, and if he does, he will reflect on what caused it and learn from the experience. He will learn from his mistakes and never repeat them. It is a question of attitude!

Why am I writing this manual? After thirty years on the road and over two million safe miles, I have asked thousands of questions, and I am hoping this manual will answer your questions, thus making our roads safer.

Having said this, let us remember that every truck we drive will respond differently, based on road conditions, tire wear, and many other factors, such as driver ability, load, and trailer differences.

Keep in mind that this is the opinion of one driver and that nothing is written in gold. Take from
