Dear Friends,
Welcome! I am delighted that you have chosen to join me in the adventures of Buttons and Babs.
As a parent and grandparent, I have always tried to monitor the content of the books which my son and granddaughter have read in growing up. I became even more conscious of this while teaching Junior Church and Teen Ministries as, quite often, the parents of the children I was teaching would ask me for recommendations. I hope that once you have read my book, you will feel comfortable encouraging others to read it as well. Hopefully, you will be able to utilize this book as a tool in assisting children in learning fundamental Christian morals and values. (See scripture in back of book)
As many writers will tell you, there is often a story behind the story. I thought you might like to know a bit about how the story of ‘Buttons’ began.
In 1958, my mother gave birth to an adorable baby boy. I was his ‘big’ sister (all of three years older). My parents were ecstatic to finally have a son. (I have a sister who is 10 years older than I.) Their joy was tempered, however, with sadness upon the discovery that my brother was Downs Syndrome. My parents were advised to ‘put him in an institution’ and forget he existed. (Remember, this was an era of time in which children with any disabilities were shunned by society at large.) The doctors were surprised when my parents informed them that this was their only son, and he would go home with them.
For the next ten years, my family was caught up in the day to day joy my brother brought into our home. My brother had a personality which was so awesome that people forgot that he had any type of disability. He won over each person he met with his smile and handshake. No matter what was said or done to him, there was no doubt that he loved everyone he met. His one desire in life was to attend school. As our community had no classes for him to attend at the age of six, my mother commuted 120 miles a day to transport my brother to another county for his education. This continued for four years.
In 1968, we lost my brother to spinal meningitis.
In the months that followed, my four year old nephew would ask me questions about my brother. One night, I began weaving a tale for him about a Guardian Angel Ghost who was always watching over us. To emphasize that this Guardian Angel Ghost was always there, I told him that ‘he’ lived in the attic over my bedroom. When he asked me the ghost’s name, I looked around his room searching for inspiration for a name. My eyes fell on a stuffed animal which my sister had made. She had used huge buttons for the eyes. Thus, ‘Buttons’ the Guardian Angel Ghost was born. It took me 40 years to realize that ‘Buttons’ charisma and personality were based on my little brother.
Buttons has popped in and out of our lives ever since. His specialty is helping children when they feel that their life is upside down. He tries to remind children that, no matter what, God is always watching over us.
We are now in our 3rd generation of children loving Buttons.
Now; Sit back, Relax and Enjoy!
I hope that you and your child will join the club of
‘Buttons’ Lovers!
