Caterpillars are known for the extraordinary metamorphosis they undergo. The time they spend as caterpillars is but for a season. Moreover, the sheer fact that one day they will become vibrant butterflies is not just expected—it is a beautiful change.
Through the eyes of some, I have been labeled quiet
as if I had some sort of contagious, incurable disease. I simply view it as an opportunity to listen and to observe. More importantly, I see it as time allotted for reflection.
I’ve spent many hours of many days alone with my personal thoughts, questions, concerns, joys, pains, and random observations. With me, these expressions were safe. I had no intention of sharing my expressions; I certainly had no intention of making them visible by transferring them to paper.
As time went on, I started feeling like a balloon that had reached its allowable capacity. I needed to let some words out! I was hesitant at first, but through persistent inspiration, I began writing. I had no thought of format or style—I just started writing in an empty journal until all the pages had words on them. It turned out that the words started flowing freely from within. At times, I found myself writing for so long in one sitting that time mysteriously passed me by.
After a while, my words started to sound poetic. I realized then that I could express myself in a way that was both private and openly creative. I guess you can say that I’ve gone through my season, exited from the cocoon, and allowed myself to openly spread my wings and become the green butterfly you’ll see—through my poetry.
