    Years Gone By

On May 28, 1970, Ruthie graduated from Silsby University in Colorado, Ohio, with a degree in paralegal and business administration.

A few months later, she received a secretarial certificate. After graduating from the Secretarial School of Business, she received a phone call from her brother stating, Our mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Ruthie’s brother left Ohio to become a farmer in Jackson, Mississippi, and her other siblings had no time for their mother.

Ruthie moved back home because her mother worked two jobs to put her through college, and she felt that she had no choice but to endure the sexual harassment, pain, and agony at her place of employment.

    Finding a Job

One year and six months went by, and it was very hard for her to find a job. Every position Ruthie applied for told her, You have the education, but no experience. One day while Ruthie was talking to her brother, he suggested that she apply for a position at a hospital. Ruthie’s brother’s wife got a job immediately at a hospital after relocating to Jackson, Mississippi, and he thought that she might also have a better chance getting a job faster in a hospital.

Two years went by, and finally she sent her resumé to Loedow University Hospital. She received a call from the human resources department of Loedow University Hospital a week later.

Hello, my name is Sandra Vemis, and I am the director of human resources. We have a paralegal position open in our legal department. Are you still interested?

    Yes, said Ruthie.

When can you come in for an interview? said Sandra.

As soon as possible, said Ruthie.

Can you come in tomorrow at 9:00 am?

    Yes, said Ruthie ecstatically.

Make sure you arrive thirty minutes early so you can fill out an application, said Sandra.

Thank you, and I’ll see you at 8:30 tomorrow, said Ruthie.

The next day, Ruthie arrived at 8:30 am. She filled out the application, plus other papers.

Afterward, the director had her assistant, Jerry Lowe, escort Ruthie to the legal department.

Jerry introduced Ruthie to Attorney Gene.

Attorney Gene said, We have a paralegal position open in this department. First, I want to know a little more about you. I read your resumé, and you have a great educational background. Attorney Gene proceeded to ask, Are you married? Do you have kids?

No, I am not married and have no kids. I have to take care of my mother, said Ruthie.

Attorney Gene asked, What made you go back to school to take secretarial skills?

I wanted to learn how to type because my handwriting is so awful, said Ruthie.

After asking so many questions, the attorney stated to Ruthie, I have other candidates to interview, and human resources will call you in a couple of days with my decision.

A week went by, and she heard nothing from Loedow University Hospital. She became very desperate. She wanted to call, but her mind continued telling her, Do not nag those people. They will call you if they are interested.

The second week, Attorney Gene called and congratulated Ruthie.

He said, We want you to come in Wednesday at 8:30 am. All of our employees have to go through a three-day orientation.

We did not discuss salary, said Ruthie.

We will discuss salary on your first day, replied Attorney Gene.

During orientation, the director of human resources went over the benefits, policies, and safety procedures.

Afterward, they were introduced to Reverend Cobrah. He gave the new employees his blessings.

He said, Sometimes jobs are very stressful. If you ever need someone to talk to, my doors are always open, and everything is confidential.

Ruthie thought to herself, At least he is a preacher and is concerned about the employees’ well-being.

It was Friday, and the three-day orientation was over.

All weekend, the only thing Ruthie thought of was that she finally got a job to help take care of her mother. By now, things were tough, and she was desperately desperate.

Ruthie called her brother and told him about her new job.

Her brother said, You see, I was right. Aren’t you glad you listened to me?

    Yes, said Ruthie.

Monday morning finally arrived. Ruthie went outside to get the newspaper and made some coffee. While the coffee was percolating, she went into the bathroom to take a shower.

My first job after college, she thought to herself.

She was so excited. After all, it took her two years to get a job.

Ruthie arrived ten minutes early. Attorney Gene came out of his office immediately; he took her over and introduced her to Marlene and Karolyn.

This is Ruthie. She is my secretary for the legal department.

Ruthie was in a state of shock. She thought to herself, Oh! My God! Did I hear him right? Attorney Gene proceeded to say, Marlene is the secretary to the finance director, and Karolyn is the secretary for nursing administration.

Heading back to the office, Attorney Gene said, First, I will begin by telling you to please call me Gene. This will help us to quickly get acquainted with each other and have a better relationship.

Gene told Ruthie to close the door, as he offered her coffee and a donut.

No thank you. I usually don’t eat breakfast in the morning, said Ruthie.

Go on and eat, breakfast is your most important meal, said Gene.

While Ruthie was nibbling on her donut, Gene went over the procedures of the office. As you know, your hours are from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. You get an hour for lunch, and after one year, you will get two weeks’ vacation. You have eight sick days and all holidays off with pay, said Gene.

What a good deal, said Ruthie.

He said, I have some bad and good news. The paralegal position that we had open is no longer available, and I would like you to start as a secretary. When our budget permits, I will promote you to a paralegal.

Ruthie wanted to cry but thought to herself, Don’t say anything; it took you too long to find a job.

I am going to start you off with $10 an hour. I will give you a $1 raise after your ninety-day probation, but you must first prove yourself, said Gene.

There was a knock on the door.

Ruthie looked at the clock, and it was 11:20
