About this ebook

According to a recent study, less than 10% of Christians make major life decisions using the Bible and prayer! One reason for that appalling statistic is that though the Biblepromises that God guides His people, it does not, in one single place, tell how. Consequently, many of God's people do not know how to get God's guidance. In God's Guidance, How It Works; How to Get It, the author pulls pictures and principles from one end of the Word of God to the other in order to set down a clear and simple explanation of how God's guidance works and how to get it. This book is Biblical, simple, and amply illustrated with stories both from the Bible and from those who seek to follow the Bible. If you want to learn how to get God's guidance, then you have come to the right book.

Preface: Why You Should Bother Reading this Book!

Decisions, decisions, decisions – decisions can be scary. Make a right decision and you will have a happy marriage, succeed in business, go to a good school and live in a house that will only increase in value until you sell it. Make a wrong decision, and … , well, you get the picture. Wouldn’t it be great to have divine help in making our decisions?

My wife, six-month-old daughter and I had just moved to a suburb of Nashville, Tennessee. We had come to a new job (I am a pastor by trade), and we wanted to buy a house. We decided to rent for a year in order to save up a down payment and to scout out the neighborhoods before we made what would probably be the most expensive investment of our lives.

God is so good. We had been in Nashville for right at a year when my wife’s mother came to see us. She told us that she had sold some property in another state and that she wanted to give us enough money for a down payment on a house. When we tried to talk her out of it, she said, Just stop right there. This money is part of your inheritance, so I want to give it to you now so that I can enjoy watching you enjoy it! I am one of those lucky guys who could never appreciate mother-in-law jokes. My mother-in-law was a godly woman who loved me like her own son. Her husband was the same.

Needless to say, we started looking for a house. We knew pretty much the size of home we were looking for, and we knew the price we could afford. We wanted a fenced in backyard; a fire place would be nice, and I had always wanted a home with a porthole (you know, a round window. Some homes have those). Beyond that, we weren’t really sure what we were looking for. We hoped (and prayed) that we would know it when we saw it. And since we are Christians, we prayed daily that God would guide us to the right house.

Now, I never told my wife, but I was just a little scared about this whole thing. I mean, we were looking for a house. We were going to commit ourselves to a 30-year mortgage. We were going to make a major investment. What if we bought it and it had hidden problems with the wiring or the foundation? What if the neighborhood suddenly took a nosedive and the house began to lose its value? What if we did not like our neighbors? And what if God did not help us find it?

You see, at that time in my life, I was not really sure how to get God’s guidance. O, he had guided me quite clearly once or twice in my life, but most of the time, following God had seemed more like prayerful guesswork. No one had ever taught me a clear and simple process for finding God’s guidance. And to be honest, I was really uneasy about making a decision about so much money based upon prayerful guesswork. I was prepared to trust God regardless, but I found myself wishing that God would be as clear about what house to buy as He was about telling Moses to go argue with Pharaoh. Not knowing what else to do, Earlene and I began to pray for God to guide us to the right house.

One day my mother-in-law was visiting. While I was at work, my wife Earlene and her mother took our daughter out for a walk around our neighborhood in my daughter’s stroller. When I got home that night, they told me about this really cool house for sale one block over from where we were renting. Now, we loved our neighborhood. A high percentage of our neighbors were church members, and the church where I worked was less than five minutes away. I thought, How awesome if we could live right here.

We made an appointment to go see the house. We loved the owners but not the house. It seemed so cramped. And they were asking for more than I felt we could afford. So we said thanks but no thanks.

For another month we searched the real estate market. We looked at a lot of homes. One day, as I was leaving for work, Earlene and I agreed that she would make an appointment for that evening to go look at a house that sounded good on paper and looked good from the street. When I got home that evening, I asked if she was able to get an appointment to go look at that house.

    Yes and no, she said.

Yes and no? What does that mean?

Well, I got us an appointment, she said, but not with the house we were talking about.

Which house, then? I asked, trying not to be frustrated.

With the house we looked at last month. You know, the one that is one street over.

Earlene, we already looked at that house, and it was too small. And they want too much for it. Do we have to go there again? It’s a waste of time.

It turns out that that afternoon my wife was walking our daughter around the neighborhood, and she came to that house. It had such great curb appeal and looked so homey that she just found herself standing and looking at it. As it turned out, the owner was home, saw my wife, and came out to talk. They had visited for quite a while when Earlene found herself asking if we could come and look at it again.

When we got to the house, something had changed. It seemed bigger somehow. It felt so homey. And I noticed that it had a fenced in back yard, a sunken den, a stone fireplace, and even a porthole – in the bathroom! I am still not sure how those details had not sunk in before. The husband of the house and I were out walking in the shady backyard, talking about football. Then I asked him what was the bottom line, what was the lowest price he could take to have enough money to buy the house at which he was looking. He gave me a figure that was much lower than his asking price and that was right at the top of what we could afford. I told him that we would pray about it and get back to him.

I will never forget what happened as my wife and I walked down the driveway towards our car. Suddenly, this overwhelming peace came over me. It was as though God was saying, This is the house! Earlene said, What do you think.

With a lump in my throat, I said, Honey, it’s strange, but I feel like this is the house God wants us to buy.

She said, "So do I, Ray, so do I. I just feel like God wants us to buy this house."

So we did. And 16 years later, we are still in that house, and I am convinced that this was the right house for us. It was the best choice then and now. God answered our prayers and guided us to make the right decision.

So, why should you bother reading this book? Over the last 14 years, as I have wrestled with scripture and with finding God’s will for my life and my church, I have stumbled upon a process for getting God’s guidance. It is biblical, for it fits the pictures of God guiding His people that are found in the Bible. And it is practical, for I have used this process again and again in my own life and the life of my church. In these pages you will find the scriptures that talk about getting God’s guidance. You will discover the principles you need to know to get God’s guidance. You will see pictures of people who got God’s guidance. And you will get a step by step process that you can use to find God’s guidance in your own life.

Chapter One Does God Really Guide His People?

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight, Proverbs 3:5-6.

If I take the wings of the dawn, if I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, even there Your hand will lead me, and Your right hand will lay hold of me, Psalm 139:9-10.

For You are my rock and my fortress; for Your name’s sake You will lead me and guide me, Psalm 31:3.

With Your counsel You will guide me, and afterward receive me to glory. Psalm 73:24

Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are plundering the threshing floors. So David inquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go and attack these Philistines? And the LORD said to David, Go and attack the Philistines and deliver Keilah. But David’s men said to him, Behold, we are afraid here in Judah. How much more then if we go to Keilah against the ranks of the Philistines? Then David inquired of the LORD once more. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah, for I will give the Philistines into your hand. So David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines; and he led away their livestock and struck them with a great slaughter, I Samuel 23:1-5.

God promises in His word that He will guide us. Then throughout the Bible we see God guiding those who worship and follow Him. Right away, the question that I want to ask is, How? How does God make my paths straight? How did David know that God wanted him to go down and defeat the city of Keilah? If we love God and want to serve God, then we want to follow God. We want to go where He sends us and do what He tells us. Not only that, but we know that the best place to be is in God’s will.

We’ve all heard it said, The will of God will never take you where the grace of God cannot keep you. And when I was a teenager, my Youth Minister taught me that the safest place to be is right in the middle of God’s will. But how do we know God’s will? How do we know where He wants us to go and what He wants us to do? How do we find the middle of God’s will for our lives? And like David, how do we find God’s guidance in the midst of life altering and even life threatening decisions?

As a teenager seeking to serve God and lead people to Jesus, and later as first a Minister of Youth and then as a Pastor, I wanted to be led by God. I wanted to know God’s will. But I did not know how to do it. And to my recollection, no one had ever clearly and biblically explained how it worked. Even in college in a Southern Baptist university in West Texas, studying for the ministry, no one ever gave me a practical and biblical explanation of how to discover God’s will for my life. And sure enough, right after college, I was faced with some major decisions for which I really needed God’s direction.

When I graduated from college, I was burned out. I knew that I needed to go to a Seminary (graduate school for preachers) and get a Master’s degree, but I just could not do it. I was finally back home in western Washington, and I thought that if I had to look
