    SYNOPSIS:

"Dear Lord, I grow so weary of sitting on this fence

I need your Holy Spirit to lift my soul on high

Grant patience, wisdom and some closure before I die"

    Br. Spike

If you ever wanted to be an integral part of your religion, but you felt a disconnect with remote culture, language and history, insert yourself into the process carefully but directly with a desire to learn as much as possible Br. Spike. This is a short fantasy of someone who ponders the realities in Christian tradition and wonders how accurate the Bible really is.

Specific theological issues are posed and addressed by participant observation and inquiry. At the beginning, writing as a fictitious lay member of a religious order, the author describes his history of religious doubts and a desire to resolve these issues. He discusses these concerns first with an Episcopal priest and then with his nephew, a physics professor who puts him in touch with Air Force researchers studying time travel at the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago. Under the guidance and support of these researchers he travels to Jerusalem and makes his trip back in time to 45 AD. He links up with John, Thomas, James and Mary Magdalene who are able to clarify early church concepts with him. He takes a side trip with Roman soldiers to visit an ancient Mithric temple near Rome and runs into Deacon Phoebe delivering Paul’s first letter to Roman Christians in the catacombs. He eventually returns to the present and is debriefed by military personnel and in turn relates his story to his original clergy contact in a coffee shop. The issues are resolved with an admixture of science fiction, adventure, and spiritual experience. The people in the story are all real people with fictitious names and the biblical figures are researched from Bible references and the writings of the Rt. Rev.Tom Wright, Anglican Bishop of Durham. The author is a licensed Eucharistic Minister of the Episcopal Church and a Professor of Neurology.

    INTRODUCTION

When I was a catechism student in Pastor Hochstetter’s class, I tried hard to learn the proper materials for Lutheran Confirmation. Every relative on the German side of the family was confirmed and I felt out of loyalty that I should also do it. I had my adjustment reactions but I was convinced that having one foot on the path to Heaven had its merits. Classes with the Pastor were not always boring: that one day when a boy with greased hair and wearing a leather jacket, put a cigarette in his mouth to impress the girls in the class. The enraged Pastor actually pistol whipped him
