      Chapter One

      Sadie Mae opened one eye slowly, then the other. She looked at the clock on the dresser. It was time for her to get up and start her day. She glanced over at the fireplace and saw just glowing embers. It was then that she realized the room was going to be freezing. She climbed out of bed quickly. In a flash she was out of her nightgown and into her heavy wool frock.

      It was time to go downstairs and help her mother with breakfast. Her father would have already gathered the eggs and milked the cow. As she entered the dining room she could feel the warmth coming from the stove. She could smell the coffee brewing.

      Good morning mother, good morning father. she said cheerfully, I’m afraid it’s going to be another cold one today Sadie Mae was tired of the snow and the winter, she wished spring would come.

      Good morning Sadie. Her mother said. I hope you are hungry this morning, I made a large breakfast, and packed you an even larger lunch.

      Her mother had fixed a hardy breakfast. She poured herself a nice steamy cup of coffee, added some sugar and a little cream. She could feel the coffee slowly warming her up.

      She finished her coffee and put her dishes in the porcelain sink. She then went back upstairs to finish getting ready. She washed her face and hands, braided her hair and put it into a top knot on top of her head. It was not her favorite style but it was the simple one. This style seemed to make her appear taller than her already five foot-seven inches.

      Sadie Mae lived in a small town with her mother, father and sister Priscilla. They had a farm with a couple heads of cattle, some pigs, horses and some chickens. In the summer time they planted a large garden. Sadie and her mother, Maggie, worked the garden and put up the vegetables for winter.

      She was tall and graceful. Her hair was the color of milk chocolate, down to her waist with just enough bounce and shine to make all the women in town envy her. Her eyes were dark brown.

      She knew it would be freezing today so she took her heavy coat, scarf and gloves from the coat rack in the study.

      She was now running late. Jake would be here soon enough to give her a ride into town. Jake Andrews was an old family friend. He owned the dry goods store. He picked up Sadie Mae during the week to take her to her job. She was the school teacher for the small town. She had thirty-two students, ranging from age seven to age twelve. Parents in this area felt it was necessary to take their children out of school in their early teens. By doing so, the children could help out at home and around the farm with the chores. Sadie’s goal was to make sure her students had the basics for reading and math. This was the last week of school.

      Sadie Mae heard her mother calling her from downstairs. Jake must be here. She hurried downstairs so she would not keep Jake waiting. She grabbed her lunch pail off of the counter and went out into the cold morning.

      Bye Pa. She said to her father.

      You have a nice day and try to stay warm. I’ll be home around three. She added.

      Sadie climbed onto the buckboard of Jakes wagon.

      How are you today, Jake? She asked.

      I’m doing pretty well, how about you?

      I’m fine. I’m a little tired of this weather. I can’t wait for spring to get here.

      Sadie realized that spring meant the end of the school year. She will lose three students this summer. Sadie had been working those three especially hard this winter. She wanted to be sure they had their addition and subtraction down pat. She also wanted to be sure they could read and understand a simple note or contract. Most of the parents had no education, this way the children could keep their skills up and help their parents at the same time.

      Jake Andrews was a quiet man. He was twenty-nine and single. There were a few ladies in town ready to claim him for their own. He had a very successful dry goods store in town. Even her sister Priscilla was interested. Sadie never gave Jake a second thought. To her, they were just longtime friends and nothing else.

      Priscilla was so timid and shy she doubted that Jake even knew she was alive. Each time Jake came around Priscilla would hide in her room or the kitchen area. Sadie Mae thought that Priscilla was beautiful. She had blonde hair and was very petite. She was jealous of Priscilla because Priscilla could go into the dry goods store and pick up a shoe or dress and it would fit her just like it was custom made.

      Sadie, on the other hand, had to make all of her clothes herself. Her shoes needed to be custom made too. She had to have so many clothes, she kept herself sewing all winter when there was nothing else for her to do. She had to have clothes for school, at home clothes and clothes for Saturday and cleaning.

      Sadie thought back to the weekend. She had a wonderful time attending the wedding of her best friend, Mary. They had been friends since they were both twelve years old. Sadie and Mary shared everything, clothes, friends, even their secrets. Sadie had stood up for Mary as a witness. She also made Mary’s wedding dress. It was light blue with a full waist and gold trim. Mary had told Sadie in all confidence never wed a man you don’t love or a man you are afraid of. Of course, this made no sense to Sadie. She thought Mary was in love with her husband, John.

      Sadie heard Jake say

      Chapter Two

      Sadie Mae woke with a start. She heard the rain hitting the window panes. That made her happy, because it meant that it was warming up outside. Oh my, she thought, soon the snow will be gone. Sadie went over to the wardrobe and took out her clothes for the day. She put on a cotton blouse with long sleeves and dainty ruffles on the cuffs and a black and white plaid skirt. She decided to put on her heavy boots today because there was sure to be a lot of mud.

      On her way downstairs she stopped by Priscilla’s room to wake her up. She tapped on the door but all she could hear was a low grumble coming
