Franciene Marie Zimmer Ph.D

Franciene Marie Zimmer Ph.D. is a registered nurse and currently holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in the Science of Natural Health from Clayton College of Natural Health, Birmingham, Alabama.  She has worked in the healthcare field since 1985.  During her adult life she has witnessed the personal struggle of people with obesity, both professionally and within her immediate and extended family.              She has witnessed and researched common obstacles people face during the weight management process.  She has observed the results and frustrations of various weight loss programs and expresses a deep empathy to those who struggle with excess weight.  In her personal struggle against obesity, she has managed to keep her own weight at an appropriate range.  Since High School, she has been a Junior size 5-7 and a Misses size 4-6.  At age 53 she is still a size 4-6.  As a result of her struggle and empathy to others, she writes this book with an effort to promote a mindful approach to weight management. She believes that self-love and self-talk are crucial ingredients to the success of weight management. She advocates eliminating the word loss from the vocabulary, replacing it with the word management when referring to weight.   In her own experience, she has learned that the way things are said, both outwardly an inwardly, will determine the follow-through.   She shares her experience with the curious reader.             Franciene is the mother of two brilliant and amazing children, Jamie and Jeremy, and the wife of a very loving, patient, and understanding man, Peter.

    About the Author

    Acknowledgements

This book is my format to reach out to those who are struggling with weight issues. We are all in this together. No one is exempt from the need to understand how weight can tie in to emotional needs. We are a starving nation. We are starving for love. It is love deep inside that needs nourishment; the love of Self is where it all begins.

I wish to thank my husband, Peter Zimmer, for supporting me through this process. His assistance and patience with this process has encouraged the manifestation of this document.

I thank family who have offered suggestion, encouragement, and inspiring words. I thank my children, Jamie and Jeremy, for loving me, and by whose very existence acknowledges that I matter.

    Foreword

The purpose of this book is to whet your appetite to learn more about yourself and how to overcome your obstacles in the area of weight management. This is not another diet book. This is not a program. What this book gives you is awareness, insight, and understanding to what could be blocking the progress of achieving your weight goals.

The author believes that the very word loss in the words weight loss and the word diet may contribute to reasons diets fail. Nutritional plan is a healthy term that holds so much more promise and positive direction. Weight management reflects: ownership to the process, mindfulness to the details, and continuous life-long strategy. Success of both, weight management and nutritional plan, lead back to feelings of self-love. Love and acceptance of Self are the underlying motivators of healthy living.

Food is in every aspect of our life. It is what we need to survive. Food is emotional, situational, social, cultural, and plentiful, all in the name of love. We begin our lives with love and nutrition, both at the same time. This connection stays with us wherever we go and whatever we do. How we interpret the meaning behind this act of love and survival, is how we direct ourselves on our path in life.

The author explains how self-talk becomes crucial to the weight management process. How you feel and what you say is the instruction your body listens to and follows. Learning new ways to say what you mean, and understand how you feel, will ultimately lead to new ways your body responds. Achieving your goals comes without pain.

The author takes you on a journey that begins with self-love and ends with a readiness to begin the process of self-discovery and weight management. As you read the book, you will feel just how special and unique you really are. You will see yourself as an individual, will learn new ways of talking to yourself, and ultimately become mindful of choices you make each and every minute. The result will be your own success story utilizing your own weight management strategies.

Learning new strategies is ongoing. Self-love is the foundation for a successful outcome. Understanding your true colors and how they interact in the rainbow of life is the ultimate quest for all of us! You are mindful on this journey, as you succeed in the process of weight management.

    Introduction

Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.

——— Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

You are the result of your thoughts, feelings, choices, heritage, beliefs, values, and interaction with the environment around you. The process of defining who you are is ongoing and does not have a simple description. Take some time to look inside. Introspection and self-reflection can help you learn. You are described by others, in ways you have affected their lives or perhaps the nation, and even the world.

You are a multitude of ingredients. The essence of you includes so many things: cultural aspects, likes, dislikes, emotions, lifestyle, thought, energy level, characteristics, psychological state, social activities, eating habits, time-management, finances, hobbies, spirituality, family marital status, personality, values, beliefs, what you eat, what you drink, chemicals you put in your body, your input, your output, hormone level, seasonal adaptation, decisions, and most of all, what you think about you. You are unique. There is no one like you. You are a universe in itself, interacting with the universe around you.

You have objectives, a goal and a plan. Your objectives may be to find peace, love, joy, and harmony within yourself, as you interact with the universe around you. Your mission is what gives you your life purpose. A basic human life purpose can be to learn to love yourself, and to love those around you, as you express the gifts you have been given. Your life strategy is your strategy, created by you. No one else can do it for you. You are it!! You are accountable for what you decide. The results are reflected in you! You are a walking billboard of your decisions, your choices, and how you feel about you.

The ingredients of who you are, is what you bring to the table of life. Each recipe of each person is different and unique. Every aspect of who you are is different than the aspects of someone sitting next to you. Your blend of ingredients can either make a healthy presentation, or a presentation of health concerns. It is not only what you eat, but why you are eating it. Amazingly, as you start to understand the why, you will change the what. As you feel your value, you will value what and how you eat.

The purpose of this book is to bring value to your table of life, and to whet your appetite for self-discovery of your weight management process. You say you have tried everything. That is impossible! You can achieve what you set out to achieve. You cannot fail. Your journey began long before you picked up this book.

The contents of this book will warm your heart, soothe your soul, inspire life-changing experiences, and deliver what you are searching for. You are seeking strategy for success. Insight into what is working for others will be a piece of the discovery process into what will work for you.

YOU ARE SPECIAL! Only you can come up with a strategy that works for you, to get the ongoing, minute-by-minute results that you want, for your reasons. My personal strategies for weight management have grown and changed as I have. As you continue on your path, you will find that weight management has less to do with food and more to do with mindful choices based on self-love.

How you think, how you talk to yourself, and how you deal with the complexities of life, becomes your personal design. Your strategy is different than anyone else in the world. Your strategy is working for you and no one else. The mystery in the success of the strategy lies in the uniqueness of the individual. It is working for you because it is created by you to honor you. It is part of you; it is you. This is your life. Enjoy the journey!

    FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

I am taking the first step in faith. I am continuing this path with true faith in myself.

    Chapter 1

    Self-Love

Love is what we are born with, fear is what we learn.

The spiritual journey is the unlearning of fear and the acceptance

of love back in our hearts. Love is the essential reality and our

purpose on earth. To be consciously aware of it, to experience love

in ourselves and others, is the meaning of life.

Self-love is the basic foundation for a successful positive outcome in all aspects of life. This is not unique. This is a universal concept for
