    Katie’s Story

When Katie was an infant her parents divorced and she went to live with her dad.

One summer while she was at day camp, she saw a lady standing behind the bushes. She didn’t say anything to her but she went inside and told the counselor what she had seen. At the time she didn’t know that the lady was her mom.

Later that day her dad arrived with the police and they took the lady away. Katie didn’t know what was happening.

Who was she? Katie asked her dad.

He didn’t answer. Katie got inside the car and kept asking him questions, but he said nothing. When they got home, her dad told her to go to her room and change for dinner, so she did. Just then the phone rang. It was the police. Katie’s dad told them to let the lady go. She heard him tell the police to put a restraining order on her.

Katie’s dad found her listening at the door and asked, What are you doing, Katie?

    Nothing, Daddy.

That night Katie went to the kitchen table and ate dinner with her dad. He didn’t say anything about what happened that day or anything about the lady.

Katie got ready for bed and said her prayers and her dad told her a bedtime story. For a moment, she wanted to ask about her mom, but she stopped herself because she was afraid her dad would get mad. So she went to bed, put her head on the pillow, and fell asleep.

The next morning she got up and hurried because she didn’t want to miss her music class. Her dad asked if she wanted breakfast, and she said no.

She got into the car and waited for him to get in and drive her to class. She was looking out the car window and there was the lady again, standing across the street from my house. Before Katie could say anything, she ran away.

Katie called out after her, Who are you? Tell me, please!

    But she was gone.

Katie’s dad came out and asked, What’s wrong?

    I saw the lady again!

What? I have to go inside, honey, and you must come with me.

    But why, Daddy?

I cannot explain it to you right now, but after school make sure you don’t talk to any strangers.

    I won’t, Daddy.

If you see that lady again, tell the principal about it.

    Why?

Honey, if you see her again, just run.

    Why, Daddy?

On the way to school, Katie asked her dad, Where is Mommy?

Honey, your mom left us, so I raised you from when you were an infant.

But why, Daddy? Didn’t she love me?

Well, she couldn’t handle having a baby at that time.

Are you saying she didn’t want me?

Honey, I don’t want to hurt your feelings about your mom.

But you don’t even have pictures of her. Why did she hurt you so badly, Daddy?

Katie, I don’t want to talk about this now.

    All right.

About ten minutes later they arrived at school and Katie got out of the car.

I will pick you up at three this afternoon, Katie.

    Okay.

    Then he drove away.

Before going in to school, Katie looked around the corner and saw the lady standing on the sidewalk. She ran inside and told the teacher what she had seen. About a half hour later the police arrived and asked Katie questions about her. But she was gone. They searched everywhere for her. She had disappeared without a trace.

At 3 p.m. Katie’s dad was sitting outside the school reading the paper while waiting for her to come to the car. After several minutes he was about to get out and look for her. Then he saw her and was relieved that she was safe.

Katie got inside the car and gave him a hug.

On the way home, her dad stopped the car in front of his office.

Why are we here, Daddy? Katie asked. I want to go home now.

    Katie Is Missing

Katie and her dad went into his office together.

After they went inside, Katie said, Daddy, I have to go to the little girls room.

He told her where it was and hurried off to make a long distance call. Later, he got distracted and lost track of time – and of Katie.

Three hours passed before he realized it. He got up from his chair and started to search for her, but she was nowhere to be found. He started to panic and immediately called the police.

Hello, police department? My name is Steve and I’m calling to report that my daughter is missing.

He was quite sure his ex-wife had stolen Katie from him and he wanted help finding her.

I have sole custody of my daughter, he explained to the officer who answered the phone. She is not allowed to go with my ex-wife. Will you put out an amber alert right away?

Well, sir, the officer said, it hasn’t been 24 hours yet.

Do you want her to have time to leave the country? Let me speak to your captain, please. I want you to get the state police, local police, and FBI involved. I do have a restraining order against my ex-wife, so you must do something right away!

The police drove right over to the office
