Maggie Tellado

The death of Maggie Tellado's two daughters from cancer four years apart and the death of her grandson the following year brought her to return to writing. It had been a few years since she felt inspired to pick up a pen or log on and begin to write. The grief she felt was turned into making birdhouses and eventually back to her love of writing, but in a different genre. Rhymes and poems seemed to be her inspiration now. The minute she went ahead with writing them, she felt a closure and release of feelings and emotions from her loss. Alongside her daily, was the support of her husband and fellow friends of her community and those out of state. Love of life and how precious it is, drew her to verbalize, in her own style of writing. Days and nights were filled with rhymes and poems as she saw it, and to say it. Maggie is very observant of nature, people and the things around her. She is passionate in her writings and wants to share her view with you. Maggie stays active with walking, reading, lunches with friends and her birdhouses. Her faith in God has brought her through the seasons of sadness and renewed her in every way possible. To Him, be the glory!

The Flight Attendants - Maggie Tellado

    DEDICATION

    SIMPLY ANN

Her smile was as sweet as a baked apple pie,

The words that she spoke were seldom, but my,

She loved pretty things, of jewelry I’d say,

And fragrant aromas to smell good each day.

Her soft spoken voice brought calmness and joy,

And a giggle or two throwing Toby a toy,

The closeness with Jan was all she desired,

And a nightly O’Reilly with Phil by the fire.

A lover of books, she read oh, so many,

on a trip to the salon each Friday with Benny.

Those wonderful times I shared at the table,

assure me in time, someday when I’m able,

to remember with love, and one day to see,

Ann was happy indeed for the life she was given,

Now even more joyful with Jesus, in heaven.

To my dearest Aunt Ann Billy,

You were like a mother to me.

    Rest in Peace.

    Love Always, Maggie

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I wish to thank my dear friends in Florida, New Jersey and Colorado for all their support and uplifting encouragement. To my number one gal pal Jan, I am grateful you came into my life almost eleven years ago and look forward to many fun times together with you. Wherever we go and whatever we do, it has been the best time of my life, even through the sadness early this year. You can count on me to be there, my dear friend.

    CHAPTER ONE

HURRY UP, BIANCA. We’re running late again. Who forgot to set the alarm to daylight savings time? If I don’t keep track of everything around here, you two would be in a big mess, said Tiffani, the oldest of the three flight attendant roommates, who always had things in order for herself and others. You are too dependent on me and I am going to change my mothering habits and sooner than you think, she remarked as she pulled her luggage cart quickly to the front door of the three bedroom townhouse they shared in Palm Springs, California.

Wait for me, shouted Kimber, the youngest of the three women, while setting her cart right next to Tiffani’s. Bianca is forever holding us up. That girl is never on time for anything, except a date, said Kimber, gulping down the last bit of hot cranberry tea. Looking at her watch, she shook her head and placed the empty tea cup on the end table in the living room.

Sorry, but I had a terrible night with this headache that won’t stop, even after some pain pills. It does seem to be going away slightly, but not as quickly as I would like it to. And I am very tired today, replied Bianca, who looked rather pale this morning.

Kimber and Tiffani believed Bianca as she did not have her usual cup of black coffee before starting her day that morning. Bianca never skipped her coffee, in fact she was given the name of Diva of Caffeine by her other two roommates.

Well, let’s get going. I have to drop Bianca off at Terminal C, and we have to go to Terminal B. Good thing we all have short flights this morning and no layovers, said Kimber brushing her long, light brown hair with her fingers, then shaking her head for more volume.

All luggage carts were placed in the trunk of Kimber’s hatchback car and they headed for Palm Springs Airport at 5:00 a.m. Their departures would take them in different directions, but they would reunite in a day or so. Fortunately, the three ladies worked for the same airline as flight attendants, which is what brought them together and eventually became roommates.

Tiffani Welch and Bianca Curtis met five years ago, while Kimber Britton came along three years later. The newest roommate, Kimber, was a godsend and a buffer between Bianca and Tiffani, who managed to bicker at least once a week when they weren’t in flight. Although she was the youngest, Kimber was wise in her comments and opinions between the two other roommates. Non-committal, Kimber had a way of bringing calmness back into the house without taking sides. In a way, she was mature in wisdom and at times Bianca or Tiffani would try to stir Kimber up, but it never did work. She held her ground with such conviction and everyone knew she was also the strongest one.

See you on Wednesday, said Bianca, scurrying after Kimber, who was at least five body lengths ahead. Hurrying, she made it to the gate and was on time to punch in her card for entry to the scheduled flight.

That Bianca. If I didn’t like her so much, she would be long gone. Sometimes she really gets on my nerves, but she is always on time with the rent and utilities and groceries, murmured Tiffani. They had met on a flight to Brazil five years ago and hit it off so well that on the return flight Bianca was invited to move in with Tiffani, replacing Courtney, who had left three weeks before to get married. Tiffani and Bianca had such a blast in Brazil, so the vacancy at Tiffani’s townhouse came at the perfect time for both of them. Other than her constant tardiness, Bianca and Tiffani were as different as day and night, blending like oil and water, yet they managed to have the best fun times imaginable together.

Totally different in appearance, Bianca was a Latin hottie, with a temper as flaming as her red lipstick. A face beautifully profiled from forehead to her nose and chin, she had the longest, darkest eyelashes without any makeup. She was a natural beauty. Bianca seemed content to fly around the country and loved her job with a passion. Meeting men was never an obstacle for her…they flocked to her like fish to the sea. A slight accent made her more attractive and men loved the sexiness of her soft, sultry voice. Blessed with the figure of a Greek Goddess and a set of breasts like Dolly Parton, Bianca Curtis had heads turning and spinning, even in her flight attendant uniform. Her black hair, usually pulled back off of her face, only manifested her Latin beauty. Once engaged to a lawyer from Texas, Bianca ended it after eight months when she realized she needed variety in her life. One man would not satisfy her every want and need and she had plenty of them, even admitting it on many occasions. Bianca was wild and a definite gold digger and knew exactly what she wanted.

Someday, when I’m tired of flying, I may settle down with a man that I can love, if he can accommodate my every desire. Until that time, I am as free as a bird, she told Tiffani. Bianca had shattered many hearts and shed no remorse on the way. It was all about her and she knew it, even to the point of boasting to her friends.

Tiffani, on the other hand, was a blonde, Mary Poppins type, who did everything right and expected others to follow suit. Granted, Bianca had given Tiffani reason to complain quite often due to her lack of tidiness in the bathroom they shared. Tiffani was always cleaning up or picking up after Bianca like a house mom.

If she does this one more time, Bianca is out of here, Tiffani would shout.

Bianca had Tiffani wrapped right around her little finger and never took Tiffani’s outbursts seriously. Bianca had heard the same speech for a few years so it meant nothing to her. Of course, this was Tiffani’s fault. They would get into a squabble and the next day it was never mentioned again. Tiffani was too easy going when it came to confrontations. She never liked chaos or drama.

Divorced at the age of twenty two, Tiffani had been a military bride at eighteen, marrying her high school football sweetheart of three years. While on tour of duty two and one-half years later, Tiffani felt she had missed out on many things and filed divorce papers while her husband was still in the service. It devastated him, but he let her go before he could receive a dear John letter. He felt it was easier to release her than to read those words in a letter. Tiffani was so young and went on with her life becoming interested in flying and took lessons from a boyfriend she met when she turned age twenty-three. Jessie had his own charter plane and would take Tiffani up, up and away whenever she asked him. Her appetite for flying increased daily, finally applying to the airlines, where she was accepted. Soaring the blue skies anywhere between eighty and one hundred twenty hours a month, Tiffani Welch has found her passion in life…the wild blue yonder.

    CHAPTER TWO

REALISTICALLY, SHARING A house between these three ladies should not have worked, but it did because of Kimber. Bianca had met Kimber at a Fourth of July party of a mutual friend in Modesta, California. Kimber was a fun gal, always smiling and loved a good time. She was like the Activities Director at special events and could conjure up some sort of entertainment in a moment’s notice and was good at it. While at the party, Kimber got everyone there involved in what otherwise would have been a very dull party. They were up on their feet dancing and playing games she had tucked away in her head with the snap of a finger. Kimber was the hit of the party and decided to suddenly bring Bianca up to lead the party in the electric slide dance. A friendship, which had grown over a period of three years, developed through Bianca’s many tales of the places she traveled as a flight attendant that peeked Kimber’s interest in flying for a career. Within the year, Kimber had applied and been accepted to the same airline. How fun!

Describing Kimber is like writing a poem. Never complex, yet sweet and genuine as a copper penny, she had the mixture of so many good qualities. Some freckles on her nose and dark blue eyes the color of the ocean, illuminated her pleasant smile. Positive in her attitude, she makes one feel you are her friend the moment you meet Kimber Britton. Tiffani was introduced to Kimber at a farewell luncheon for a flight attendant friend leaving to have her first baby.

Bianca and Tiffani had no intentions of bringing in another roommate until they heard of Kimber’s fire at her apartment complex. Luckily, Kimber was not there and in flight at the time of the fire. Bianca and Tiffani felt saddened by the news and approached Kimber about sharing the townhouse for three. Kimber immediately agreed. Since the fire happened in the middle of the month, Bianca and Tiffani would not accept any money from Kimber until the first of the following month, allowing Kimber to save some funds during that time. Moving Kimber out of the hotel room she had occupied was a very emotional day for her as she cried in both their arms. All that was left in her apartment was a small metal replica of an airplane Bianca had given her when she first became a flight attendant. All else was destroyed in the fire. Kimber was the same size as Tiffani, so Tiffani invited Kimber to borrow some things until she got back on her feet. A donation was also taken for Kimber among the other personnel, which helped to replenish Kimber’s wardrobe a little at a time. It was a blessing in disguise for Kimber, as well as Bianca and Tiffani.

Within three months, Kimber was on her way to re-establishing her savings account and holding her own financially. Tiffani knew Kimber was a special woman brought into their lives for a reason, unknown to them. Time alone would reveal the true purpose of Kimber’s ordeal of that tragic fire, which took all she had, but that tiny metal airplane.

Close as three friends could be two years later, their bonding was apparent. The three ladies decided to give themselves a name and chose the one of Tres Bonitas. It was their little private code when they were in flight and meant Three Pretties. The amazing part was that their mutual love of flying had brought three unique, but different ladies together.

Flying was the most perfect job in the world according to them. Seeing the world, not through rose colored glasses, but through one’s own eyes, capturing each sunrise or sunset, meeting fascinating people and working a minimum of eighty hours, if that is what they chose, was their Utopia. Also on the plus side was the savings on clothes since they wore uniforms daily. Yet, it felt good when they did dress up in their regular clothes looking in the mirror as a new woman. All in all, being a flight attendant was the best job in the entire world.

Finally, Kimber and Tiffani were on board the plane, ready for a short flight to New Mexico, while Bianca was headed for Reno, Nevada. All three ladies would be back in their townhouse within a couple days, telling stories of their flights over a Margarita or two.

Bianca was anxious to see Kyle Madison, an executive with a very large computer firm, who lived in Reno. The two of them had a brief fling on Bianca’s last flight and they had made an agreement to spend time together when their mutual availability would allow. Kyle was probably number Twenty-Four on Bianca’s list of gentlemen callers. He had become successful ten years ago and was fifteen years Bianca’s senior, but you would never know it from his appearance. An avid runner and swimmer, Kyle kept in shape at least four days a week, regardless of where he stayed with his travels. Biceps, and ab muscles like Mr. Universe, his thighs and calves bulged out ready to explode. In essence, Kyle Madison was a specimen of the perfect man. Never married, but once engaged (as Bianca has also been), Kyle got stood up at the altar on his wedding day nineteen years ago, vowing never again to get serious or fall in love. A heart once crushed served as a harsh lesson he would never forget.

An understanding between himself and Bianca was acceptable and they liked the no strings attached policy. Each was a free agent to do whatever they wished. A few laughs, good times, fun and some romance was what it was all about for Bianca Curtis and Kyle Madison.

The first class passengers has been served and Bianca was on her way to the coach section, continuing with the service for those passengers. Something to drink, sir? asked Bianca gathering ice for a previous passenger. A five dollar bill, folded between his index finger caught Bianca’s attention of a man reading, as she waited for his choice of drink. The man’s bent elbows rested on the aisle arm rest, holding onto the money.

Red wine, please, he said. Pouring the drink for him, Bianca looked into his eyes as she handed it to him.

Thank you, he answered, setting the drink down on his opened tray table and continued reading a book on finances or something like that. Bianca couldn’t see the title from her standing position and it was not that important to find out. After attending to the other passengers, Bianca made a second announcement for refill of beverages, pushing the cart down the aisle.

    And for you, sir?

There he was again, holding another five dollar bill for another glass of red wine. Kind of cute Bianca thought as she poured and handed the drink to him. Not very friendly however. He must be engrossed in that book, so give him his drink and move on.

In her travels, Bianca got to meet so many different people – some nice, some strange and some very talkative. At times, it made her chuckle to herself and also Tiffani and Kimber too, when they saw a passenger sound asleep with their mouth wide open. Rarely did a passenger snore, but it was open mouth season for some of them, waking up and looking around to see if anyone noticed it. Also, you could just tell the business people who couldn’t wait to open up their laptops when the flight attendant announced it was appropriate. The average tourist usually slept, read a book, watched a movie or the first time flyers were incessant talkers…maybe nervous or just anxious to get to their destinations.

Anyhow, flying had it’s rewards and touching down was always the biggest one. Bianca was thankful for every flight that brought her feet down, touching the ground. In her years of flying she only had encountered one tragic event of a first officer who suffered a heart attack in mid-air. The officer did live and went on to early retirement, but it gave Bianca a shaky experience, one she hoped never to experience again. On some flights in the past, she did encounter bad storms and it was something she never got used to.

Being Brazilian, Bianca had been taught prayer at an early age and even though her lifestyle was less than perfect, she still kept the prayers she remembered in the back of her mind, pulling them out when the occasion arose. It was like holding onto a wild card for her. Brief, but to the point, she was a one or two-line prayer person, no more than that. But, the night of the first officer’s heart attack, Bianca did go into the restroom and prayed a short one for him. To her, prayer had it’s purpose, just as the men in her life had theirs.

    CHAPTER THREE

KIMBER AND TIFFANI’S flight to New Mexico landed safely, yet no word from Bianca’s cell phone. It was their practice to phone one another on landing, with their famous saying,Tres Bonitas, signaling that all was okay and they were safe on the ground.

If we don’t hear from Bianca by tonight, we’ll phone her, said Tiffani.

Kimber agreed and the two gals debarked from the plane, laughing about a joke one of the passengers had told them during the lunch hour. They headed to the crash pad they would share with four other flight attendants, anxious to kick off their shoes and relax, maybe have a fun night or just stay at the pad. Bringing their own sheets and pillow cases, towels and toiletries to the crash pad was a regular practice for most of the flight attendants. If not, you could stay at a hotel, but you paid for either one. The crash pad was empty as they entered and saw notes on the bulletin board by the kitchen area. The notes were addressed to the new arrivals and Kimber took them down and started to read them to Tiffani.

Hi, be back end of week, off to Connecticut, signed Rory. Another note was from Clancey, which said, See you in two weeks. And two other notes from Ryan and Larry gave the gals a good laugh with a cartoon character of two female flight attendants snoring in their beds, drawn by Larry. It was their way of communicating with other flight attendants and pilots. The cartoon was done in good taste as a welcome to the crash pad.

How about some chicken fajitas with rice and red beans and a couple margaritas? asked Tiffani, rolling her tongue around her lips.

I’m starving, too, said Kimber. Sounds good to me.

The earlier idea to stay at the crash pad was soon forgotten, now they wanted to go out and eat and have some fun. They showered and got dressed quickly, comparing notes on the way to the restaurant about some of the cute guys on the last flight and this new first officer by the name of Zach Reagan.

Tiffani loved his Texas drawl and cleft chin. She claimed the cleft chin gave him character, setting him apart from the average guy. From what she could see, the rest of him wasn’t bad either. They had exchanged small conversation, but that was all. Zach Reagan didn’t seem very out-going, more like the silent type, but he did appeal to her.

Town wasn’t far, so the gals took a taxi and split the cost since they would only be there overnight, leaving tomorrow. That night, however, they intended to enjoy themselves, sleep in till morning and prepare for the flight back in the late afternoon at 1600, ( 4:00 p.m.)

Kimber’s cell phone rang and it was Bianca, all settled in at the hotel in Reno.

What took you so long, Bianca? We were getting worried waiting for your call, said Kimber.

I had some things to do and went for a swim after unpacking, answered Bianca.

    With that businessman? asked Kimber.

Not yet, we’ll meet up tonight for dinner, said Bianca.

Tiffani took the phone from Kimber and had to share some news with Bianca. Kimber knew exactly what Tiffani was going to tell Bianca and waited patiently to get her phone back. Tiffani looked at Kimber, just smiled and looked out the window of the cab as they drove to the restaurant.

Bianca, there’s this new first officer, Zach Reagan. He was on our flight down here, and he is definitely my kind of guy, not very talkative and I don’t know anything about him, but I do love his drawl and he has the cutest chin, said Tiffani all aglow like a ladybug at night. Bianca’s only comment was, put Kimber back on the phone. Talk to you later, Tif.

So what’s this about a new first officer, Kimber? asked Bianca.

He’s a Texan and moved here three months ago. As Tiffani said, we don’t know a thing about him, but I’m sure Tiffani will find out, said Kimber.

Listen ladies, all is well. I’ve got to run to see my guy in a couple hours. Let’s talk again some time tomorrow. Have fun you two, said Bianca.

You too, you vixen and be gentle with this one, Bianca. He may be the one, said Kimber.

Laughing at Kimber’s comment, Bianca let her know that for now, no guy is the right one until she says so and Bianca meant every word.

    We’ll see, commented Kimber.

That’s right, you will see. Bianca had to run along and hung up.

Out on the town in a new city always is a unique experience, some are remembered and some you want to forget rather quickly. Tonight would be Kimber’s first time in New Mexico and she was excited to see all she could, especially the food and men. Tiffani knew all the hot spots from her previous trips and acted as their tour guide.

Let’s try over at the Four Margaritas. They have the best fajitas in town and you get a lot for your money, said Tiffani. She gave the cab driver the name of the restaurant and sat back to relax until they arrived there, ready for some fun and good food.

The cab driver let them out in front of the Four Margaritas and watched as Tiffani and Kimber, laughing arm-in-arm, headed for the entrance. Kimber coyly said to Tiffani, Is he looking at our butts? Is he still standing there? Well, let’s give him something to look at."

In a gitty mood already without any tequilas, both ladies went on walking and shaking those hips from side to side. As they opened up the front door, Kimber turned around and waved to him, while Tiffani blew him a kiss.

Hope we don’t get him on our way back to the crash pad, laughed Tiffani. Seems like we are off to a fun night already.

Inside the Four Margaritas and eating their food, Kimber turned and said, Tif, you were right about this place. The fajitas are the best and this is the biggest plate I’ve seen. I am so stuffed.

A couple more tequilas had them both tipsy and Kimber commented that her kidneys were floating and she needed a trip to the restroom.

Mine too, come on Kimber, I’ll go with you, echoed Tiffani.

Phew, what a relief that is. I was ready to get out a raft, said Tiffani as they laughed coming out of the restroom.

On their way back to the table wanting one more tequila for the road, Tiffani turned to Kimber and said, Oh, no.

What, oh no? What is it Tiffani?

Don’t look now, but it’s the cab driver.

    What? You are kidding, right?

    No, said Tiffani.

What should we do, Tiffani? Do you think he is looking for us? Oh boy, we’re in trouble if he is, said Kimber.

Noticing that there was only one entrance and exit to the Four Margaritas, what was their escape plan from the cabbie guy? So far he hadn’t spotted them, but he was definitely looking for someone.

Let’s sit down with our backs to the bar and maybe he’ll order a drink. This place is so crowded…maybe we’ll get lucky and he’ll leave and soon, they hoped. Nervous about their earlier schoolgirl prank with the cabbie, they sat as still as sedated mice in a cage. Heads down and eyes rolling left and right, they dare not look up. The gals were temporarily frozen in time in the Four Margaritas Restaurant.

We can’t sit here all night, Tiffani. What should we do? Think! asked Kimber.

Somehow, they turned their heads to look at one another and started laughing out loud and couldn’t stop. It was one of those laughs you would not be able to stop no matter how hard you tried. Their outbursts caused everyone turning around to see what was going on, even the cab guy.

Don’t look Tiffani, here he comes. Put your head down. They had been spotted like a leopard at birth.

Hello ladies, remember me, the cab driver? he said standing there, glaring at them.

Barely able to lift their eyes up, they peeked out of the corners and said, Oh, uhh, hi. Funny running into you here. Kimber seemed frozen like an ice cube in a tray.

May I join you ladies? he asked ready to pull out a chair and seat himself.

No, we are leaving…right now, yes right now, said Tiffani, grabbing for her purse under her chair, almost falling over while looking up at him.

Yes, this minute, said Kimber, spilling her drink as she nervously got up.

Leaving him there, standing alone, they bolted for the exit door like a flash of lightning.

Don’t look back. Just keep on walking, said Tiffani.

Outside and somewhat safe, both ladies walked quickly away from the restaurant headed to…where now?

Let’s never do that again, even in fun. Now we need to get back to the crash pad and guess what – we need a cab, said Kimber.

Hailing down the cab coming toward them, they felt a little queasy. Must be those darn tequilas.

I’m going to be sick, said Kimber holding onto Tiffani’s arm.

Not now, wait until we get to the pad. Try and hold it down. Where the heck is that cab driver going? He went right past us, darn it anyway! said Tiffani putting out her thumb to get the attention of another cab coming close to them. Pulling up right next to the ladies, he stopped and Tiffani quickly opened up the rear door and pushed Kimber, who was now moaning, inside the cab.

    Where to ladies? he asked.

Wait a minute. I recognize that voice, said Tiffani.

Looking in the front mirror, Tiffani made direct eye contact with the phantom cabbie from their earlier drive to the Four Margaritas. It was him! Kimber was getting sicker by the minute and they needed to get back to the crash pad now. Tiffani thought, oh no, now he knows where we are staying when he drops us off.

What choice did they have? If they got out and waited for another cab, it didn’t make sense when he was already there. Giving the cab driver the address once again, their fate was in his hands. Both girls were a little frightened of how he might react about their stupid prank on the drop off earlier in the evening. Bianca’s cell phone number happened to show up on Tiffani’s phone as it rang in the cab.

Where are you two? asked Bianca. You are an angel from heaven, said Tiffani.

    What? Why? asked Bianca.

Thinking it wise to give Bianca their destination, Tiffani went on with all the details, whispering with her hand over her face, so the cab driver could not hear. Bianca asked if they were alright and to stay on the phone with her until they got to the crash pad. Arriving safely, Tiffani and Kimber, who was as floppy as a wet mop, yelled out to Tiffani to hurry up and pay the guy and quick.

Tiffani turned around to take care of the fare as the cab driver opened up his door and started to come around to the back where they were. Kimber was almost useless at this point and Tiffani just stood there looking at him. He came right over to Tiffani and said, You ladies need to be very careful when you tease a man. If I were not the nice guy I am and have two sisters I care about, you may have had a different night tonight. I know you thought you were funny with your little prank, but believe me, you could have gotten yourselves into serious trouble. Don’t be stupid. Next time, use your heads.

Neither one of them expected to hear what he had said to them, but needed it. He was right. No more teasing stuff. Kimber was not able to walk and she needed help. Tiffani could not help by herself and Kimber was dead weight about now.

Would you let me help you with your friend? asked the cab driver.

Tiffani’s instinct led her to think she could trust him and said yes. Tiffani and the cab driver held Kimber up under both arms and they were able to walk her to the front door. He held onto Kimber while Tiffani took out the keys from her purse. Once inside, he carried Kimber over to the sofa and set her down. Thanking him for his help and apologizing for their stupidity, Tiffani went back into her purse and gave him another tip, which he did take. He truly was a Good Samaritan and they were indeed lucky it was him and not another cab driver.

Bianca had hung up as they must have forgot she was still on the cell phone when they got out of the cab. Settling in for the night, Tiffani phoned Bianca back and related the events to her. Bianca did agree they were foolish and not street smart, as she was. That night, the two ladies could have slept through an air raid they were so knocked out from those tequilas. Kimber wished she could have said a proper thank you to the cab driver, but Tiffani assured her she did take care of it for both of them.
