About this ebook

This book reveals the symbols, used so abundantly in the Old and New Testaments, what they mean, and what they are telling us. Symbols often say more than the words used.

Capitals, and lower case first letters, of words also tell a great deal. As an example, should "holy spirit" be capitalized? Most of the time, the answer is no, because, though God is a Spirit, Himself, the holy spirit is your own spirit, wedded to the Spirit of the Almighty. It is in union with God, but it is in part, your own spirit. How much is God, how much is "you", depends of you.

Answers to Questions People Never Ask - but Should: But Should!

Joshua Hinneh

Born in Amelia, Virginia in 1940, I remember the war we were fighting. There were many men in uniform, but few at home. We lived close to an airfield, and I recall the roar of bombers. I could only wonder what the noise was. Visiting the airfield, with my mother, airmen lifted me into the belly of a bomber. Upset, I cried until I was taken back out. A machine, in the PX, looked like a jukebox. I could swear fighter aircraft flew inside it, with roaring engines. Some have suggested it was a game, and the flying aircraft were moving visualizations on the front. Though knew the alphabet, and printing, before I entered school, I failed the first grade. After repeating it, I failed the second grade. Summer school ensued. After that, I managed to slide by. At about twelve years of age, I became very fat, gaining five pounds a week. When I wide, as I was tall, a doctor diagnosed under- active thyroid. I managed to lose, but didn't become thin until after a stint in the Air Force. I was fortunate, securing good jobs, but unfortunate, in that I squandered all my good fortune in booze, drugs, et al. Had I invested my monies, instead, I would be writing this Bio as a multimillionaire. There is an upside, however. All the curses, I bought into my life, have forged me in the fires of trial, a servant of God. Unrealized wealth is not so great a loss, if the final product of ones life, results in a mission, more important, and fulfilling. I am blessed with excellent retirement income, for a High School Graduate, which was resultant to some degree, on the sympathy of teachers. After having been reared Methodist, and Baptist, I became a Mormon for about 25 years. I never progressed there, as I was too busy throwing my life away, and too uncaring to contribute to the church treasury. In 1985 I became a Messianic Jew, with a wonderful Pastor, who taught me much. I thought his sermons so good. I undertook to put them to paper. After a number of successful endeavors, I undertook self-studies on my own; to prove there were no differences between the Old and New Testaments. The result was unbelievable growth in knowledge, and understanding, I acquired. Through the normal processes of life. Each death, of a loved one, or illnesses in family, or friends, all serve to temper the steel of life. It is the certain knowledge of a loving God, and Savior, enabling reunion of loved ones, during the reign of Messiah, that soften the loses endured in the present.

    ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS

    PEOPLE NEVER ASK

    BUT SHOULD

This book was compiled using, for the most part, the Concordant Literal New Testament, which sources the most ancient Greek and Hebrew language scriptures.

Reference materials used are based on the New King James Version of the Bible,

Over the centuries, the Bible has been re-written to reflect the thinking and doctrines, of men, and to ensure, in order to be published, that it was at least ten percent different from the previous versions. These in depth studies will negate these endeavors,

Results show, although you may think your Bible doesn’t agree with this edition, in fact, it does – it does agree!

    THE LINGERING MYSTERY

    OF THE ELUSIVE

    Judas Iscariot

    THE LINGERING MYSTERY

    OF THE ELUSIVE JUDAS ISCARIOT

For the last 2000 years, many have read the accounts of the betrayal of the Messiah by the Apostle, Judas (remaining one) Iscariot (man of cities). Consequently, Judas has remained one of the most berated individuals of all time.

Without regard for circumstance, or reason, he has been declared unforgivable, and doomed to hell.

Having once been a Mormon, I remember one of the Elders telling me Judas is the ruler of hell because he has a body, whereas Satan does not. I don’t know if that is part of Mormon belief, or just that elder’s personal opinion.

We really don’t have much to go on in determining who Judas was, where he came from, where he was chosen, why he was chosen, or for what purpose he was chosen. We are going to accomplish an in depth analysis of the man, to see if we can determine just who he is, and why he did what he did. With that in mind, let’s look at some of the scriptures directly relating to him.

We will be using The Concordant Literal New Testament (as source), which is the most up to day exact translation (word for word), from the Hebrew (of the Old Testament),

and the Greek (of the New Testament), directly into their closest English equivalent.

The reference material is the New King James Bible, and related references (such as dictionaries, concordances, commentaries).

    THE LINGERING MYSTERY

    OF THE ELUSIVE JUDAS ISCARIOT

    Starting from Matthew 26:19-31:

And the disciples do as Jesus arranges with them, and they make ready the Passover.

    2 Chr 35:10-11

So the service was prepared, and the priests stood in their place, and the Levites in their courses, according to the king’s commandment.

And they killed the Passover, and the priests sprinkled the blood from their hands, and the Levites flayed them.

Now, evening coming on, He was lying back at table with the twelve disciples.

[Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.]

It is a common opinion that our Lord ate the Passover some hours before the Jews ate it; for the Jews, according to custom, ate theirs at the end of the fourteenth day, but Christ ate his the preceding even, which was the beginning of the same sixth day, or Friday; the Jews begin their day at sun-setting, we at midnight. Thus Christ ate the Passover on the same day with the Jews, but not on the same hour.

Christ kept this Passover the beginning of the fourteenth day, the precise day and hour in which the Jews had eaten their first Passover in Egypt.

(from Adam Clarke’s Commentary, Electronic Database.

And at their eating, He said, Verily, I am saying to you that one of you shall be giving Me up.

THE LITERAL TRANSLATION SAYS, GIVING ME UP, AS IN CONTRAST TO, SHALL BETRAY ME.

BETRAYAL IS NOT AS WE NORMALLY KNOW IT, FOR IT WAS NOT DONE IN SECRET (BEHIND ANYONE’S BACK), AND SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN DIRECTED BY THE MESSIAH.

HERE, IT MEANS TO DISCLOSE WHERE JESUS IS AT. THE CHOICE OF WORDS, IN THE KING JAMES VERSION, MORE REFLECTS THE TRANSLATOR’S PREJUDICE AGAINST JUDAS, RATHER THAN AN ACCURATE, UNBIASED VIEW

And, sorrowing tremendously, each one of them begins to be saying to Him, It is not I’, Lord

IN THE CONCORDANT VERSION, IT IS A DENIAL, WHILE IN THE KING JAMES, THEY SEEM TO WONDER IF IT IS THEMSELVES.

    Ps 55:12-13

For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:

But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.

Now He, answering, said, He who dips his hand with Me in the dish, he will be giving Me up.

    Ps 41:9

Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

The Son of Mankind is indeed going away, according as it is written concerning Him, yet woe to that man through whom the Son of Mankind is being given up Ideal were it for Him it that man were not born

    Isa 50:5-6

The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back. I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

Now, answering, Judas, who is giving Him up, said, It is not I, Rabbi. Jesus is saying to him, You say it.

JUDAS DENIES IT IS HIMSELF, BUT JESUS EXPRESSES KNOWLEDGE OTHERWISE. IF JUDAS HAD ASKED THE QUESTION, IS IT I? , THE STATEMENT, THOU HAS SAID, REALLY WOULDN’T MAKE SENSE.

    Ps 55:21

The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.

Now at their eating, Jesus, taking the bread, and, blessing, breaks it, and, giving to the disciples, said, Take, eat. This is My body.

    Prov 9:5

Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.

And taking the cup and giving thanks, He gives it to them, saying, Drink of it all,

    Ps 116:13

I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD.

for this is My blood of the new covenant, that is shed for many for the pardon of sins.

    Jer 31:31

Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

Now I am saying to you that that under no circumstances may I be drinking henceforth for this, the product of the grapevine, till that day whenever I may be drinking it new with you in the kingdom of My Father.

    Deut 32:14

Butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the fat of kidneys of wheat; and thou didst drink the pure blood of the grape.

HE WOULD NEITHER DRINK WINE, EAT A GRAPE (NOR RAISIN). HE DOES EAT AND DRINK WITH US NOW - EVERY TIME WE PARTAKE OF THE SACRAMENT (THE MEAL OF SALVATION).

And, singing a hymn, they came out to the mount of Olives.

OLIVE OIL IS SYMBOLIC OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

Then Jesus is saying to them, All of you shall be snared in Me in this night, for it is written,

I shall be smiting the shepherd,

And scattered shall be the sheep of the flock.

    Zech 13:7

Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

We pick up on the matter again in Matthew 26:44-50

And, leaving them again coming away, He prays a third time, saying the same word.

Again, then, He is coming to the disciples and is saying to them Are you drowsing furthermore and resting? For lo near is the hour, and the Son of Mankind is being given up into the hands of sinners -

Rouse We may be going. Lo he who is giving Me up is near

    Ps 119:150

They draw nigh that follow after mischief: they are far from thy law.

And at His still speaking, lo Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a vast throng with swords and cudgels, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

    cudgels:

The solid fiber of the trunk and branches of a tree, after cutting, hence many things made of wood, as a weapon, stocks for confining the feet, or a log.

    Ps 119:157

Many are my persecutors and mine enemies; yet do I not decline from thy testimonies.

The account of Jesus’ being betrayed by Judas is recorded by all the evangelists. See Mark 14:43-52; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:2-12. Verse 47.

[Judas, one of the twelve, came]

This was done while Jesus was addressing his disciples. John informs us that Judas knew the place, because Jesus was in the habit of going there with his disciples. Judas had passed the time, after he left Jesus and the other disciples at the Passover, in arranging matters with the Jews, collecting the band, and preparing to go. Perhaps, also, on this occasion they GAVE him the money, which they had promised.

[A great multitude with swords and staves]

John says that he had received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees. Josephus says (Antig. b. 20 chapter iv.) that at the festival of the Passover, when a great multitude of people came to observe the feast, lest there should be any disorder, a band of men was commanded to keep watch at the porches of the temple, to repress a tumult if any should be excited.

This band, or guard, was at the disposal of the chief priests, Matt 27:65. It was composed of Roman soldiers, and was stationed chiefly at the tower of Antonia, at the northwest side of the temple.

In addition to this, they had CONSTANT guards stationed around the temple, composed of Levites. The Roman soldiers were armed with swords. The other persons that went out carried, probably, whatever was accessible as s weapon.

These were the persons sent by the priests to apprehend Jesus. Perhaps other desperate men might have joined them. [Staves] In the original, wood; used here in the plural number. It means rather clubs or sticks than spears. It does not mean staves. Probably it means any weapon at hand, such as a mob could conveniently collect.

John says that they had lanterns and torches. The Passover was celebrated at the full moon; but this night might have been cloudy. The place to which they were going was also shaded with trees, and lights, therefore, might be necessary.

Now he who is giving Him up gives them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I should be kissing, He it is. Hold Him.

    Ps 55:20

He hath put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him: he hath broken his covenant.

He . . . gave them a sign. Most of the Roman soldiers would not have known Jesus.

(from The Wycliffe Bible Commentary, Electronic Database.

And immediately, coming to Jesus, he said, Rejoice, Rabbi And he kisses Him fondly.

    Prov 27:6

Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

Yet Jesus said to him, Comrade, for what are you present? Then, approaching, they laid hands on Jesus and hold Him.

    Ps 41:9

Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

    ******

We have yet another view on this matter in John 6:68-71

Simon Peter answered Him, Lord, to whom shall we come away? Declarations of life eonian hast thou

    Ps 73:25

Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.

And we believe and know that Thou art the Holy One of God.

    Ps 78:40-41

How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.

Jesus answered and said to them, Do not I choose you, the twelve, and one of you is an adversary?

DEVIL MEANS ADVERSARY. IT DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN SATAN, FOR WE ARE ALL ADVERSARIES OF GOD (EVEN WITH MESSIAH).

    Job 1:6

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

SATAN MAY, OR MAY NOT BE CAPITALIZED. WAS IT SATAN, THE ADVERSARY, WITHIN ALL OF US! NOTICE, ADVERSARY ISN’T CAPITALIZED

Now He said it of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, for this man was about to give Him up, being one of the twelve.

    Ps 55:13-14

But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.

ISCARIOT ISCAR’IOT (is-kar’i-ot; probably from Heb. ‘ish qerioth, man of Kerioth ).

A surname of Judas (which see) the traitor, to distinguish him from others of the same name (Matt 10:4; etc.).

Now let’s look at John 12:3-8:

Mary, then, taking a pound troy of veritable nard attar, very precious, rubs the feet of Jesus and wipes off His feet with her hair. Now the house was filled with the odor of the attar.

    Veritable: Believic (belief system)

Nard: a precious ointment prepared by the use of a fragrant East Indian plant of the genus Valeriana, which furnishes a juice of delicious Order.

Attar: the essential oil used in the Orient for anointing.

    Ointment of spikenard:

Denotes friendship and devotion. From a plant with thorns.

    pound troy: 12 ozs veritable:

genuine nard: a precious ointment prepared by he use of a fragrant East Indian plant of the genus Valeriana, which furnished a juice of delicious order.

attar: the essential oil used in the Orient for anointing.

    Prov 27:9

Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.

Now Judas of Simon Iscariot, one of His disciples (who is about to give Him up) is saying,

NOTHING IS TOLD OF JUDAS’ FATHER.

Wherefore was not this attar disposed of for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?

denarii: ten-asses. It’s value was about seventeen cents.

    Eccl 4:4-5

Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.

Now this he said, not that he cared concerning the poor, but that he was a thief, having the coffer also, and bore what is cast into it.

    Ezek 33:31

And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.

IT WOULD APPEAR THE IMPLICATION WAS THAT HE WAS INCLINED TO STEAL FROM THE CHURCH, THOUGH THE SPECIFIC CHARGE IS NEVER MADE IN SCRIPTURE THAT HE DID THAT. PERHAPS IT WAS HIS GREEDY NATURE AT WORK (DESIRING TO HOLD MUCH WEALTH). WE CAN ONLY GUESS.

HE WHO ACCEPTS A GIFT (SACRIFICE), OWES OBEDIENCE IN RECIPROCITY. IF WE ARE NOT OBEDIENT, ISN’T THAT BEING DISHONEST (THEFT).

Jesus, then, said, Let her be, that she should be keeping it for the day of My burial.

    Ps 109:31

For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul.

THE MESSIAH WOULD NOT BE RECEIVING THE ANOINTING OF HIS BODY, AS WAS THE CUSTOM OF THE PEOPLE. THEREFORE, IT IS ACCOMPLISHED HERE, PRIOR TO HIS DEATH.

    Luke 24:1-3

Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

Now in the early depths of one of the sabbaths, the, and certain others together with them, came to the tomb, bringing the spices which they make ready.

ONE OF THE SABBATHS: ONE OF THE SEVEN SABBATHS BETWEEN PASSOVER AND PENTECOST.

For the poor you have always with you, yet Me you have not always.

    Deut 15:11

For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.

    ******

    And also John 13:21-30

These things saying, Jesus was disturbed in spirit, and testifies and said, Verily, verily, I am saying to you that one of you will be giving me up.

    Ps 55:12-13

For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:

But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.

The disciples, then, looked at one another, being perplexed concerning whom He is speaking.

    Gen 42:1

Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?

IT WOULD SEEM UNTHINKABLE FOR ONE OF THE APOSTLES TO GIVE UP THE MESSIAH (INCLUDING JUDAS).

Now one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved, was lying back in the bosom of Jesus.

THIS MAY HAVE MEANT ONE OF HIS OWN BROTHERS. I DO NOT AGREE THAT IT IS ALWAYS JOHN . I WOULD NOT RULE OUT THAT IT MAY HAVE BEEN JUDAS?

Simon Peter, then, is nodding to this one to ascertain whoever he may be, concerning whom He said it, and is saying to him, Tell us whoever it is concerning whom He is saying this.

SIMON PETER IS ASKING THE ONE, WHO IS LEANING ON JESUS BOSOM. PERHAPS IT WAS IN A WHISPER?

That one, then, leaning back thus on the chest of Jesus, is saying to Him, Lord, who is it?

    Esth 7:5

Then the king Ahasuerus answered and said unto Esther the queen, Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so?

Jesus, then, is answering and saying, He it is to whom I, dipping in the morsel, shall be handing it to him. Dipping in the morsel, then, He is taking it and giving it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.

IT WOULD SEEM JUDAS HAD BEEN CHOSEN TO DO THE DEED. IT WAS A DIRTY JOB THAT NOBODY WANTED, BUT SOMEONE HAD TO DO IT.

And after the morsel, then, Satan entered into that man. Jesus, then, is saying to him, What you are doing, do more quickly.

SATAN WOULD NOT HAVE WANTED TO DO THIS BECAUSE, KNOWING THE BIBLE, HE WOULD HAVE KNOWN HE WAS WORKING FOR HIS OWN DOWNFALL. ALTHOUGH, I KNOW GOD COULD HAVE COMPELLED HIM TO DO IT.

I FEEL GOD WITHDREW HIS SPIRIT AND PROTECTION FROM JUDAS (AS HE HAD DONE WITH JOB). HOWEVER, WHERE JOB WAS SECURE IN THE FAITH IN HIS OWN

RIGHT AND WITHSTOOD THE ORDEAL, JUDAS MAY HAVE BEEN A MAN, WEAK IN FAITH, AND IN LOYALTIES.

SINCE HE HAD BEEN A THIEF, HE MAY HAVE LIVED A SORRY LIFE, BUMMING HIS WAY. HE MAY HAVE BEEN A SCAM ARTIST. WE HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING WHAT KIND OF LIFE JUDAS HAD LIVED.

    Ps 109:6

Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand.

SATAN STANDS AT THE RIGHT HAND OF JESUS. IT DOES NOT NECESSARILY IMPLY THAT HE WAS ACTIVE IN CAUSING JUDAS TO ACT OUT HIS ROLE IN THIS SITUATION.

JESUS STANDS AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD. SIN STANDS AT THE RIGHT HAND OF JESUS.

    Job 1:7-12

And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.

And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

Now no one of those lying back at table knew to what purpose He said this to him.

NONE OF THE APOSTLES AND DISCIPLES WERE GRASPING WHAT WAS HAPPENING, REGARDING JESUS, AND HIS SACRIFICE ON OUR BEHALF. JUDAS, LIKE THE REST, ALSO SEEMED NOT ABLE TO GRASP WHAT WAS REALLY HAPPENING.

For some supposed, since Judas had the coffer, that Jesus is saying to him, Buy what we have need of for the festival, or, that he may be giving something to the poor.

Bag: A money pouch wherein Judas kept the disciple’s funds.

Getting the morsel, then, that man came out straightway. Now it was night.

    Prov 4:16

For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.

Judas was directed to do his task. Could it be that it was his reasoning that was so wrong?

Someone had to give Jesus over to the enemy because the Word of God had declared hundreds of years before that it would occur.

For it not to have occurred would have made God untrue. It had to happen on an exact schedule. Everything had to coincide with the temple rituals.

    ******

    John 18:1-9 tells us:

These things saying, Jesus came out with His disciples to the other side of the Kedron winter brook, where there was a garden, into which He entered, He and His disciples.

    Cedron: Dusky place, ashy.

    2 Chr 15:16

And also concerning Maachah the mother of Asa the king, he removed her from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove: and Asa cut down her idol, and stamped it, and burnt it at the brook Kidron.

Now Judas also, who is giving Him up, was acquainted with the place, for often was Jesus gathered there with His disciples.

    Judas: Something remaining, remaining one.

    .

Judas, then, getting a squad of deputies of the chief priests and Pharisees, is coming there with lanterns and torches and weapons.

    Ps 22:12

Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.

JUDAS HAD NO SAY IN WHETHER THEY BOUGHT WEAPONS OR NOT!

Jesus, then, being aware of all that is coming on Him, coming out, said to them, Whom are you seeking?

    Ps 3:6

I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about.

They answered Him, Jesus, the Nazarene. Jesus is saying to them, I am He. Now Judas, also, who is giving Him up, stood with them.

    Isa 3:9

The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.

BY ANSWERING, JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE CROWD INDICATED THAT THEY DID NOT RECOGNIZE HIM, DUE TO THE SEMI-DARKNESS AND THEIR DISTANCE FROM HIM.

I am he. Literally, I am. This assertion can indicate merely identification, as in John 9:9, or it can suggest the mysterious and majestic name of God

himself (8:58). Perhaps both elements are fused together in this case. Judas . . . stood with them. At last he was in his own element, mingling with the enemies of Jesus.

(from The Wycliffe Bible Commentary, Electronic Database.

As, then, He said to them, I am He, they drop behind and fall on the ground.

    Ps 27:2

When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.

Nothing miraculous is implied here. The bearing of Jesus, plus the fact that he advanced toward them rather than sought flight, unnerved his captors.

Remember that some of these same men had found themselves unable to lay hands on him previously (7:45-46). No doubt the majesty of his last utterance had something to do with their reaction also.

JESUS WAS A RABBI OF THE HIGHEST STANDING AND ESTEEM. THE IDEA OF ARRESTING SUCH A HOLY MAN WOULD, IN ITSELF, GIVE CAUSE FOR HESITATION. IMAGINE HOW A SMALL TIME SHERIFF WOULD FEEL ARRESTING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

Again, then, He inquires of them, Whom are you seeking? Now they said, Jesus, the Nazarene.

Jesus answered, I said to you than I am He. If, then, Me you are seeking, let these go away,

They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.

These apostles. This shows his care and love even in the hour of danger. He expected to die. They were to carry the news of his death to the ends of the earth. Hence he, the faithful Captain of Salvation, went foremost into trials; He, the Good Shepherd, secured the safety of the flock, and went before them into danger. By the question which he asked those who came out against him, he had secured the safety of his apostles. He was answered that they sought for him. He demanded that, agreeably to their declaration, they should take him only, and leave his followers at liberty.

The wisdom, caution, and prudence of Jesus forsook him in no peril, however sudden, and in no circumstances, however difficult or trying. (from Barnes’ Notes, Electronic Database. Copyright ©) 1997 by Biblesoft)

that fulfilled may be the saying which He said, that Of those whom Thou has given Me, of them I do not lose anyone.

    John 6:39

And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

    Ps 126:5

They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.

    Jer 23:4

And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking, saith the LORD.

That the saying might be fulfilled which he spake, Of them which thou gavest (‘hast given’) me have I lost none. The reference is to such sayings as John 6:39; 17:12; showing how conscious the Evangelist was, that in reporting his Lord’s former sayings, he was giving them not in substance merely, but in form also. (See the note at John 17, Remark 1 at the close of that section.)

Observe, also, how the preservation of the disciples on this occasion is viewed as part of that deeper preservation undoubtedly intended in the saying quoted.
