About this ebook

FLAT is an exploration of the rapidly expanding subject of Flat Earth theory. Social media has seen a large increase in interest and discussion concerning the subject. The theory has grabbed the attention of a large number of people who are beginning to ask more and more questions of our educators, scientists and politicians as Heliocentricity is representing our observed world less and less.

    Flat - A. Rutter

    One.

I had, over a long career, made lots of friends who flew aircraft for various airlines for a living. Occasionally, if I were on a trip somewhere and they were part of the crew, I would be invited up to the flight deck by one or two of them to chat about how my profession could help theirs on a daily basis and vice versa. These chats were really helpful in that crews could ask what they could do to make my daily working life easier and I could do the same for them. From my point of view some of the most interesting aspects of the visit would be to observe the crew’s actions and workloads and see at first-hand what their various planes just could and could not do and how their instruments gave the crew the information they needed to both follow my instructions and how to plan and navigate their trips.

It was on one of these visits that a simple question, asked out of curiosity, sent me tumbling down a hole which I suspect even the largest rabbit would struggle to escape from.

    Two

An artificial horizon instrument, as used on an aircraft, has two main functions. One function is to establish if the wings are level with respect to the depiction of a horizon contained within the instrument. The other function is to establish whether the aircraft is in level flight with the nose pitched up or down again with respect to the artificial horizon. That does not mean at a constant distance from the surface; it means level. The instrument is based on an internal mechanical gyroscope; there are no electronics in it to ‘compensate’ for anything. If the wings both sit on the datum line of the artificial horizon and don’t tilt above it at either side, then the aircraft is both in level flight and is not banking left or right.

On this particular trip, I happened to notice something with respect to this one instrument which struck me as curious, or rather our position on it. I noticed that, according to the AH (artificial horizon instrument) our wings were perfectly level. That was fine, as expected. However, I noticed that our climb/descent rate indicated zero. Our aircraft was flying perfectly level. So, what’s the problem with that you may ask? And it's quite a subtle point. I agree that an aircraft, to maintain its level flight without climbing or descending, should sit perfectly level on the horizon of the AH. That level flight obviously allows for rising and falling ground with a respective safety margin and takes account of other aircraft in the vicinity above and below for separation purposes ...and that seems fine. The curious part of level flight however is that it works perfectly well if the aircraft is flying over level terrain...but the earth is not level. Granted it may undulate with hills and valleys but the earth is curved. The earth is a sphere, or rather an ‘oblate sphere’ as the current thinking goes.

So...if an aircraft maintains perfectly level flight for an extended period, over a curved surface...then surely it would climb relative to the surface below?

In more simple terms, should the aircraft not be always in a gentle descent (albeit a very shallow one) for it to follow a gently curving away surface beneath?

But it doesn't do this. An aircraft, our aircraft, was indicating on the AH that it was in perfectly level flight, not a in a shallow downward tilt to follow the curve of the earth below...but perfectly level flight.

So, I asked the question. The crew seemed surprised, as if I didn't know something that I really should have.

Just reach behind you and pick up that black folder will you?

    Asked the captain.

    I did as he asked.

    We're at 37,000ft correct?

    Correct I replied.

Ok he said, so at this level you can see the curvature of the earth out of the windscreen...correct?

    Correct again.

Ok then, turn the folder sideways and line up the edge with the horizon.

Again, I did as I was told,

    Got it?

    Yup

    So, what do you see?

I paused, nervous at making what I thought would be an ignorant comment, It’s flat? The long straight edge of the folder sat perfectly along the line of the horizon in the distance which could easily have been over 100 miles wide.

Precisely he said smiling quietly there is no curve.

    Maybe I was missing something I'm sorry I don't understand...are you saying the earth is...not curved...really?

Ok he said patiently, say the earth is spinning at roughly 1000 miles per hour, agreed? In one direction...agreed?

Yeah I said, curious, intrigued and slightly nervous now.

Ok then, say its spinning eastwards at 1000mph and we want to fly eastwards at 500 knots. As soon as we take off we're going backwards roughly at a rate of 500 knots as the earth spins away ahead of us. If we want to fly westwards; even if we take off and hover we're still gonna cover the ground at 1000 miles per hour, understand?

    I nodded slowly

So...a spinning earth makes flight impossible as we know it, makes our routes impossible, it even makes you and me...impossible. No spin, no curve...no sphere.

What follows in this book is where that very first conversation took me. What I discovered. Please do not accept it all blindly, do your research, check it all out, very carefully. There are multitudinous ways to do it, Google, Wikipedia (careful here though as it can be edited by anyone), YouTube (I would suggest this as your ‘go to’ site. There are more and more explanatory videos appearing every day). You decide. I won't give you the titles of articles or videos to check what's coming because that would be influencing where you go. Do it yourself and, if you do, and, if you find out that what I'm about to reveal reflects what you actually see and feel to be true, then don't keep it to yourself. I know it's challenging and daunting. There is information out there which may change your perception of everything you think you know to be true; of everything you've been taught. And that's the point. What you, me, and all of us have been taught is, in my opinion, not true. I hope that once the enormity of the things that are contained here sink in then you may well feel compelled to make others aware; to make others do their own research, and by doing so we can all maybe bring an end to this ‘global’ deception to which we have all been unwitting victims.

We will address different aspects of what we have been told as being the truth, one chapter at a time.  Hopefully you may understand how everything is connected, how it all makes sense; and how the things we hold as truths are all pieces of one vast puzzle of deception. A puzzle which we were never supposed to figure out. Some pieces have, and continue to be, hidden from us all by those who would seek to dominate and rule. These pieces are the keys to a bigger picture which, I believe, we are never meant to see.

What you choose to do with what you discover as you progress and research is for your own conscience to decide.

So...the facts, the subjects and the missing pieces of the puzzle.

    Four

I’m going to ask you now to set aside what you have been taught, from childhood onwards, about the Earth we all live on. Just for the time it takes you to read these first few chapters. If, by the end of them, you are curious and want to find out more then read on; if it seems ridiculous or absurd to you then so be it. All I ask for at this stage is an open mind.

1000 years ago, a Middle Eastern scholar named Al Biruni mapped the earth’s surface. At the time, Persian explorers had been travelling extensively for many years. Their knowledge of science was both reliable and extensive. Al Biruni used this knowledge, along with his own learning, to detail a map which is now known as the Azimuthal Equidistant Projection. This map is best described (as shown on Wikipedia, Google, etc.) as a top down view of the earth, using the North Pole as the centre. The projection lays the earth’s surface out as a flat circle with the continent of Antarctica running around the full circumference, enclosing the oceans.

Taken as an historical artefact the projection seems unimportant; however, on the Wikipedia page the map is cited as being used by two (amongst many other) organisations. One of these organisations is the United States Geological Survey. The main purpose of the USGS is to accurately map the surface of the earth. It has other numerous scientific functions with an accompanying vast governmental budget and staff numbers of more than 9000; and yet, with all its capabilities and resources, the USGS chooses as its logo the 1000 year old Azimuthal Equidistant Projection map.

The other organisation cited on the Wikipedia page is none other than the United Nations. Its connection with Al Biruni’s map is even closer than the USGS’. The United Nations also uses the Azimuthal Equidistant Projection as its identifying logo. It is however, also on its stationary, on its buildings...and on its flag. Curiously the United Nations has removed the continent of Antarctica (somewhere of huge importance which we will address later) from the projection before using it as its logo. Nevertheless, the projection is there, representing the United Nations Organisation, for the world to see.

The connection between these two global organisations and their use of the projection to represent them to the world, is cited clearly on the Wikipedia web page (there are many other organisations which also use it as their logo, the World Health Organisation, the International Civil Aviation Organisation, the International Maritime Organisation and the World Meteorological Organisation to name just some). There is however, another page on the Wikipedia web service which features Al Biruni’s projection in some detail. This page, in common with the USGS, the WHO, the WMO, the ICAO, the IMO and the UN, also uses the projection as a true representation of the earth’s surface and its continents. Could it be that these world organisations use the map only because cartographers worldwide readily admit that it is impossible to portray a spherical globe accurately onto a flat surface?

Could it be that the reason that the USGS, the other organisations, and the UN make no mention or reference to this ‘other’ page in relation to their shared logo is that it, along with themselves, also attests that the projection is indeed an accurate depiction of the earth and its surface though in relation to a topic which the other organisations would rather not be associated with?

If so, perhaps this is because, whilst they all agree that the projection is a true representation of how our world actually exists, the ‘other’ page is that used to explore the hypothesis that we do not, as we have all been taught, live on a sphere; that the earth is in fact not a globe and that our world is, as was believed for 4000 years of history a non-rotating plain, surrounded by oceans and enclosed by the ice of Antarctica.

The ‘other’ page is that belonging to The Flat Earth Society.

    Five

    I know the mention of a ‘Flat Earth’ or the Flat Earth Society is enough to bring so many emotions to the fore; from scepticism to cynicism, from curiosity to ridicule...or even fear (and, with respect to the Flat Earth Society, who I suspect are an establishment tool to encourage all of those emotions with their own strange brand of dis- information, I fully understand all the range of feelings). Just for this chapter try to suspend these emotions and read on with an open mind. Think about the numbers coming and ask yourself, honestly, whether you genuinely believe that you are living in a planetary system which is moving through space according to these motions and speeds. If, after seeing the numbers, you feel that you do, and I do mean feel, as in ‘perceive movement’ then I fully respect that. It is interesting however that even Albert Einstein commented (with respect to planetary rotation);

I have come to believe that the motion of the Earth cannot be detected by any optical experiment.

    The model which we accept as real then;

The scientific and educational establishments hold that the world that we live on moves through space, in conjunction with other planets, moons and stars according to what is called ‘The Heliocentric Model’ which was proposed by the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus in 1543. The model postulates that the Earth, planets and moons rotate around the Sun. The model also postulates that; whilst the Earth planets and moons rotate around the Sun they are also rotating on their own various axes and travelling forwards through space at the same time. As this simultaneous rotational and forward motion is happening the Sun is also travelling through space along its own path through the Solar System which in turn is rotating around the Milky Way Galaxy.  This mass of rotational and linear movements may seem complex enough to comprehend but, when the speeds and values involved are factored in, the model itself becomes almost inconceivable.
