    About the Author…

    Foreword

Holding on to yesterdays…that is a phrase that has been quoted many times. Whether it was written in a song, or mentioned during nostalgic talk, that phrase certainly continues to grow legs.

In Radio Free Mickey, we met Mickey Miller. He’s a nice enough guy, has his strengths and weaknesses, but overall a good character kind of guy. We delved into his psyche a bit, pronounced a few of his flaws, and celebrated quite a few of his standards and morals as well.

We also met his best friend of years, Jimmy, and a host of other characters that surround Mickey in his day to day life. Each has their own idiosyncrasies and live life on their terms. All in all, approximately forty characters were introduced in the first book of this series, and each had their ways of interweaving through the life of the main character, Mickey.

The main cast of eighteen or so characters who were developed in a much more deeper definition could be easily put into the group of good versus evil, as some were obviously on the side of Mickey Miller and his endeavors, while others proved to be obstacles in his way of life.

But underlining the good versus evil theme is actually a much more powerful scenario that continues on with this second installment, Life On Side B, and that is Mickey Miller, a flawed hero by many a definition, is indeed holding on to yesterday.

We see a man who has such a passion for what he does, often lost in this current society where success is measured in dollars and cents and how much status one accumulates, whether prestige or toys. We involve ourselves with a man so driven by his standards, standards that were cultivated at an early age through his childlike and childhood passion for radio. We invade the life of a man who learned just what the moral fiber of radio was during the seventies, albeit sometimes flawed as well, and holds on for his life.

Do not think that this is a man who is not willing to change with the times. This is a man, a co-owner of a radio station, who has seen what the standards are in the current day and age, what has evolved from his childhood days, and uses what he can without compromising his beliefs and standards. That kind of character we rarely see in society today. Yes, we oftentimes read about flawed heroes doing wonderful things in isolated incidents over the internet or in newspapers, but rarely do we experience someone who holds steadfast to their beliefs, beliefs whose time may have passed this society by, and reap success on the many levels that he has.

Flaws? Mickey does possess them, from his nervous anxieties to being a workaholic at times, driven by his inner passions. Though do not mistake Mickey as a control freak kind of person who can do everything alone. While he stands tall in his standards, he relies on the support of those around him to get him through the rough seas he encounters on his trips through challenging channels of life. He leans on Leigh, his wife, for the things he needs outside the radio station. He utilizes his best friend, Jimmy, as his sounding board for his passion, as well as his main support in times of anxiety. He looks to Stacey for sharing and then executing what his visions are inside the station.

So, the bottom line is that Mickey doesn’t just hold onto his beliefs of yesterdays in a world full of technological advances in his career field. He is a flawed leader of character who believes in the team concept, and utilizes his support group very well. Nevertheless, in this world that has advanced in so many ways since the time period of the seventies, it is refreshing indeed that there is one character spoken about here that stands above all of the rest when it comes to the character ideologies that came from this past and that have inherited the earth today.

Today’s world in general is dominated by media stories of the negative; disasters and violence and horrific events. It is also dotted with stories of the extreme and absurd. Newspapers and television have lost what news could be about, and I do not talk about religious outlooks or spiritual happenings, but about good old fashioned success stories. People who work hard and succeed in the face of a society that is laced with bankrupt morals and compromising character.

Mickey Miller holds on to yesterdays…the right kind of yesterdays…where in his world of radio and broadcasting, the listeners came first, not how much money a station can make in commercial time…where creativity and entertainment were grouped together in a business that was once fun…and freedom (but within the standards of the FCC) of speech once meant something other than shocking people with sexual comments. Sure, innuendo is funny when taken in moderation…just like everything else. But the standards of graphic radio have taken over a business that should be left to listener imagination. After all, isn’t that what television is for?

Moreover, in a world where everything has been sliced into a niche, into a specialty, or playing to just one type of audience, Mickey Miller harkens back to when radio played to a much larger common denominator/audience. He reaches back and uses his station for as many listener’s interests as possible, to cultivate as many genres of music as possible, to actually attempt to bring back simplicity to an industry where formats have been sliced into so many pieces. And he does that with his visions and beliefs of what radio should be. The seventies were not the hey day of radio. It was also a flawed time. Yet, in his eyes of a child back then, the spirit of radio was a much stronger institution that brought so much more meaning to his life, and it is that spirit that propels him to be what he is today, even in the face of radio’s constantly changing industry.

Life On Side B continues the exploits of Mickey Miller and station WVVV, V103 as it is known, licensed in northeast Ohio. And while this series is fictional, sit back and let your mind wander into a time of the present that brings back moments of the past and see if our readers can’t help but to celebrate the time honored phrase of ‘holding on to yesterdays’.

    Enjoy!

    Dedication…

    …To my father

    Prologue

WVVV is a radio station licensed to North Ridgeville, Ohio. Also known as V103, it was co-owned by Mickey Miller and Kevin Priest Andrews until Priest sold off his share of the ownership to Mary Anne Sumner.

In the book Radio Free Mickey, we were taken inside the life of Mickey Miller and his wife Leigh, and meeting two of their nine children. Mickey was a very successful radio station owner whose credo was to ‘never sell out to the corporations’. He felt that radio had become cookie cutter and diluted since the law that was passed where corporations can own as many stations in any given market as they wanted. So he built WVVV on an eclectic format, something that he created, and hired a staff that shared his beliefs. He hired staff that believed in loyalty and respect, two pillars that help build a team. And that is the way he developed his station, everyone was a team. His success was well documented in the ratings, climbing into the number one spot in the Cleveland market, and holding that position for quite some time.

His morning team of Courtney and her Court (Stu, Mike, Leah, Jewels) were also number one in morning drive time. Other than Courtney, who hailed from Long Island where Mickey originated from, he believed in hiring local talent as on air personalities, to help identify with the community and his positioning of the station as ‘a station for the community’. All were wildly popular in the community. Radio Free Mickey introduced us to his staff: Stacey, the Marketing and Promotions Director; Doogie Schnauzer, V103’s Music Director; Jessica, the receptionist; Ric Fox, Brandy Scott, Brittany Wise, Jeff Weaver and Mandy Riley, who were all air personalities.

Radio Free Mickey told the story of how two corporations, Snake River Broadcasting out of Texas, and Algonquin Broadcasting Company from Pennsylvania were in cahoots and negotiations with co-owner Priest Andrews for half the ownership of the station. This was kept a secret from Mickey, whose beliefs were anti-corporation. As rumors leaked, Mickey called on his best friend and Pirate Radio mogul, Jimmy, to formulate a plan to get down to the bottom of the rumors, and then solve the issues at hand.

    Chapter 1

The fire trucks were just pulling away as Mickey sat on the back bumper of the paramedic squad truck. Sucking on some much needed oxygen, he stared in shock at what was left of his empire, and drifted into the questions that will plague him well into the immediate future…what?...how?...and why?...why…WHY?

Moments before, Mickey was dragged out of the burning offices and studios of WVVV in northern Ohio. He was caught by surprise when the alarms went off and the sprinklers went into action, dousing everything in sight. The sprinklers went off about 3pm. He remembers jumping out of his office chair and running towards the studios. He remembers seeing the flames shooting out of the control board in one of the studios and a couple people in the studio trapped by the flames. He ran down to the studio door to free its captives, and as he opened the door, the flames shot out in a fireball that engulfed him. Or so it seemed…

He cringed on that bumper as he again took a deep breath of oxygen. Mickey was frayed and singed all over his body, but appeared to escape any major injury. His head was still quite foggy as he sat there unaccompanied. He watched the fire trucks pull away from the parking lot, noticed about half his building lying in smoldering ruins to his right, then suddenly became chilled as his thoughts went in the direction of his staff.

He looked around, but couldn’t see anything. Mickey tried to stand up, and realized just why he couldn’t. He had wraps on his bare legs from the lower thighs on down to his feet, wraps that included soothing creams in cool temperatures for the burns he received from that fireball that erupted when he opened the studio door. The burns were second degree, but were still very uncomfortable for the man who was still experiencing shock. He had been taken out of the studio area by the two people he freed, Kevin James, a new disc jockey hired two months ago at the station, and Carla Vincent, his sidekick. Although Mickey couldn’t get up from the truck’s bumper, he wiggled around to the corner on the left side so he could get a better view of what was behind him. He saw nothing but two ambulances, yet no one was around those. Another chill ran the length of his spine, this time with a passenger aboard named urgency. His discomfort was not just in his legs, or any other of the several minor burns embedded in his skin, but the fact that he was sitting alone on the bumper, and could not find any signs of life anywhere around him.

The situation began to get the better of him as his breathing became more rapid, and his anxiety heightened. He was ready to hop off of the back of the paramedic truck when a paramedic quickly turned the corner to his right, startling Mickey.

Hey, where do you think you’re going? the paramedic said sternly. You’re in no shape to move, especially walk. Stay here and try to relax. We’re working on a couple of your staff people right now, and there are a few more from your staff that we have that are like you with some minor injuries but in the back of an ambulance right now.

What? Who are they? How are they? What’s going on? Mickey started throwing rapid fire questions at the young paramedic.

Mickey, I need you to relax. Control your breathing. We’ve got you here for a reason. If you can’t relax, I’m going to have to send for another ambulance, and we’ll put you in there.

Mickey took a couple of deep breaths from the oxygen attached to his nostrils with a band around his head.

The paramedic went on, good, Mickey. Relax. I’ll let you know if there’s anything to worry about. We’re working on your two new jocks, Kevin and Carla. Both have smoke inhalation pretty bad. Make sure you stay here, and let us work on them. Got it?

Yeah. Sorry. Just very concerned. They gonna be alright? asked Mickey.

They should be. Hell, from what I heard, Mickey, you saved their lives. We’ll be back to finish with you in a couple of moments.

    Mary Anne walked by.

There you are, she said, how are you feeling?

The paramedic left to return to the area where Kevin and Carla were being worked on. As he left, Jessica and Courtney came around the corner. They both said in stereo, hey Mickey…you okay?

Mickey looked over to Mary Anne, then to the two ladies to his left.

Yeah, I guess. I’m more concerned about Kevin and Carla.

Looks like you have quite a bit of issues here, you should go to the hospital and get checked out, too, responded Mary Anne, waving at Mickey’s bandaged legs.

Jessica jumped in, I agree. When they are done with Carla and Kevin, make sure they transport you as well. In fact, I’ll go tell them when they’re finished.

Mickey was feeling anxious, and becoming short. His tone quickened and firmed.

Can someone please tell me about them?

We don’t know anything Mickey, said Courtney. They are both laying over on the grass, and both appear to have some bad burns. But that’s all we know.

    Are they conscious?

    I don’t know.

Mickey was blatantly itchy now. Not physically, but mentally.

    Can someone find out?

Courtney walked away with tears in her eyes. Jessica was feeling tears swelling as well. Mary Anne reached out for Mickey’s right hand, in an attempt to console him.

Mickey, I know how you feel, they’ll be okay. You need to stay calm for us right now, too. Thank God this wasn’t any worse, she whispered.

Mickey exhaled a deep sigh. I’m very concerned. This is the last thing we needed as a business. As much as we’ve struggled the past six months since your arrival, we definitely don’t want anything like this to happen. I’m just very concerned.

I know it hasn’t been what we both have envisioned, and we’ve talked about that and will continue to work on it, but right now, focus on yourself and not the station. You’re in shock, and you need to get those legs taken care of. God, Mickey, I’m sure you just saved their lives! Relax and focus on the positives…

Mickey took a few more deep breaths and did not respond. He closed his eyes tightly, and his face displayed the pain he was feeling but trying not to show.

There were a few screams that could be heard from out of the noise surrounding the smoldering scene. Mary Anne looked around the corner of the paramedic truck, then suddenly took off in a half scamper. Mickey sat frozen in his facial feature and Jessica stood beside him to his left still.

A few more screams, still inaudible of words, broke through the noise once again. Mickey opened his eyes and looked straight at Jessica, somehow sending a type of communication her way.

Mickey, I know you’re hurting. Hang in there. I know you’re concerned. I’ll stay with you here.

What are those screams? Mickey asked.

Not sure. Want me to look?

    Yeah.

Jessica took a look around the truck on the left and saw three firemen dousing a smoldering area that flared up.

Mickey, looks like the fire is still going over there a bit. There’s a few firemen soaking the area again.

Okay. Where did Mary Anne run to? You see her? questioned Mickey.

Yeah. She’s with Carla and Kevin. She looks very serious though.

Another ambulance pulled into the parking lot without sirens or lights activated. Jessica turned and watched it as it went by them and pulled next to where Kevin and Carla were situated. The three paramedics exited the ambulance quickly with their gear, and suddenly there was quite a bit of commotion coming from that area.

A television truck urgently entered the lot as well, but was quickly stopped by the local police. A cameraman darted from the truck and started shooting video. A policeman kept him a distance away from the scene.

The commotion continued around Kevin and Carla. Mary Anne looked towards Jessica and shook her head from side to side. Jessica could see Courtney standing in the area trying to be consoled by one of her show’s jesters, Mike. Jessica felt a stirring chill so deep that she openly shivered. Considering it was a sunny day with temperatures near eighty, Mickey’s attention spiked.

Jess, what is going on over there? I’m not getting a good feeling watching you…

"Not sure Mickey. The ambulance pulled right to where they are.

Mary Anne and Courtney are there with Mike. It looks like they might move them now since there are two ambulances there now."

Mickey tried again to hop off of the bumper, but only scooted a couple inches. Jessica reached out to balance him, then went and pulled him back up onto the bumper more securely.

Don’t Mickey. Just don’t. You know I’m not strong enough to pick you up if you fall…

Come on Jess, I gotta see what’s going on there.

No way. I’ll tell you. You know, the last thing you need is to fall over and rip that raw flesh of yours.

Mickey settled down, though his face was deep in thought calculating how he could still get over there.

Just stop Mickey. I mean it. You’re pissing me off now.

    Okay…okay! he shouted. Sorry Jess.

With the verbal exchanges between Jessica and Mickey taking place, they didn’t notice that one of the ambulances were being loaded, and had just started on their way. When the ambulance hit the parking lot exit, sirens and lights were turned on. Jessica turned and looked back toward Mary Anne. Mary Anne appeared to be in tears. She looked toward Courtney, and she was being held tightly by Mike. One still remained on the ground being worked on, but Jessica couldn’t make out just who it was.

The news crew from Channel 8, Fox News, walked over to where Mickey and Jessica were. The cameraman turned on the camera and pointed toward Mickey, and Pamela Williams began to ask questions of Mickey.

Mickey…how are you feeling? Looks like a pretty bad fire here today… Can you tell us what happened?

Pam, please, not right now. We’re concerned for the well being of two staffers who are hurt, but we don’t know to what extent. Please, we’ll sort this out after we are comfortable with what we know.

    Mickey, what about your legs…

Pam, please, later. We’ll hold a press conference later when we know more. Thanks.

Pam signaled for the camera to be turned off.

Okay Mickey. Off the record, your legs look pretty bad.

I’m fine. More concerned with everything else. I have no idea what happened, how it happened, or what the damages are. We have two people who are hurt. That’s all I know.

Mind if I walk over there? asked Pam.

Rather you didn’t. It’s really not your concern. Let them work on them, and we’ll let you know.

Sudden commotion led to a couple screams from that area. Pam took off toward them.

    Mickey screamed, Camera stays here.

Pam ran to the area where one was still being worked on. Jessica looked over to the area. Mary Anne was now holding Courtney and Mike, and jocks Mandy, Jimmy Jukebox and sales accountant Johnny Rhoades were all in one big hug as well. Paramedics were working feverishly on the one person left, but no one identified which person it was. Jessica turned toward Mickey and shrugged.

I really don’t know, Mickey. No one is signaling anything toward me… she said.

I gotta know what’s going on… Mickey repeated.

I understand. I understand. But sit tight. They’ll tell us soon.

Mickey continued his fidgety behavior. His instincts of being restless were understandable. Mickey had been working hard on controlling his stress and anxieties since Mary Anne took over Priest Andrews’ partnership with Mickey. And though the first couple months were a positive and profitable time for WVVV, the past four were best categorized as a runaway disaster…one after another. His stress had elevated the past couple of months in particular, and this accident was in no doubt challenging his levels again.

Pam came back over to where Mickey, Jessica and her cameraman were standing.

She looked directly at Mickey and said, He’s in pretty bad shape. He’s got some bad burns and some deep smoke inhalation. They’re trying to stabilize him so they can transport him. But it doesn’t look good over there.

Oh my God…please help him! Mickey prayed.

Pam stayed with the trio and waited. It was an eerie silence that controlled the area. Minutes went by. All each of them could do was look down, or look at each other. It was a group of people in silent prayer and hope.

Without any knowledge, they heard the back doors of the ambulance close, and the engine start. Jessica looked around the corner, and Mary Anne was already halfway to where they were.

Here comes Mary Anne… Jessica stated.

God, I hope it’s good news Mickey said.

A teary-eyed Mary Anne walked around the corner and joined the group. Her make up was running down all over her face. Her eyes met Mickey’s.

"Kevin is on his way. Hopefully, he’ll stay stable until he gets there. You should go as well. I’ll stay here as assess the situation.

Obviously, this knocked us off the air. I’ll go in and see what we need to do to get back on. But you should go and get looked at. Go on."

Okay. I’ll go. Let me call Leigh, maybe she can meet me there with some clothes.

The paramedic who kept Mickey in place a while ago came back over. He looked at Mickey, and focused on Mickey’s legs which were wrapped. He undid the wraps, and his legs were indeed burned moderately.

Mickey, I’d suggest you go to the hospital he said.

Yeah, I think you’re right. They don’t feel very well at the moment.

Okay. I’ll radio for another ambulance. It’ll be a moment or two.

    Chapter 2

While Kevin, Carla and Mickey being treated at St John’s Hospital a few miles away, Mary Anne and Jessica walked back toward the building to survey the damages. The front door area was still intact as were the office area. The brunt of the damages were located in the area where four studios were, one of which was the main broadcast studio. While no one actually knew how the fire began, they knew where it began, and that was the production studio that was being used by Kevin James and Carla Vincent.

Brandy Scott joined Mary Anne and Jessica as they approached the front door. Brandy was on the air doing the afternoon show when the fire knocked her off the air about three pm. It was now nearing seven pm, and the sun was about half an hour from setting, and the three ladies wanted to waste no time in figuring out the mysteries at hand.

Hold on there ladies. Where are you going? asked a fireman.

Inside. We need to see if we can get back on the air… Mary Anne responded.

Oh, no you don’t. The building is unsafe right now. We’ll do a walk through in the morning.

That’s not acceptable started Mary Anne as Jessica let out an audible gasp. We need to get back on the air. Can’t we do a walk through now?

With the fire area still smoldering a little, and the water damage still fresh on the building, it’s not a good idea.

Mary Anne waved over to the Fire Captain and he walked over to the group outside the front door.

What can I do for you? Captain Benjamin asked.

We need to get inside, Captain. Any chance to do a walk through now? questioned Mary Anne.

Actually, no. I’m sure you’d want to wait until your insurance people get here and give this a thorough walk through. The site is still to hot to walk through anyway the Captain replied.

But we’ve got to find a way to get back on… Mary Anne thought out loud.

Mary Anne turned to Jessica, then Brandy.

Hey, any chance we can crank up the old studio in back? It’s been over a year since we put that stuff out there… Mary Anne wondered. Maybe we can get it up for the next few days at least…

Hmmm…great idea, Mary Anne… said a somewhat startled yet motivated Brandy. I’m familiar with the equipment, but don’t know how to hook everything up…if that’s possible back there.

Jessica agreed. We can ask Logue. Logue knows all about the electronics here. He rigged up the new boards for us just after you started. He should be able to do it…at least I hope so…

He still around today? Mary Anne questioned.

I don’t think so, he wasn’t on boards with me for my show responded Brandy. I’ve got his cell. I’ll call him now.

Brandy flipped open her phone and dialed away. Jessica looked at Mary Anne with a hopeful feeling. Captain Benjamin and the other firefighter excused themselves from the group and rejoined the others finishing up their job and recoiling hoses.

Hi Logue? Brandy. Hey, whatchadoing? We’ve got an issue down here.

    Logue asked what’s going on?

We had a fire. Knocked out half the building. Any chance you can help us?

    We off the air?

    Yeah.

    We had a fire?

    Yeah…A fire.

    No shit.

    Yeah.

Think you can rig up the old studio that’s out back?

    Hmm…not sure.

    Fire pretty bad? Anyone hurt?

Yeah. Real bad. Yeah. Mickey, Kevin and Carla are all at the hospital.

    Holy shit.

So Logue, can you get down here and help us out?

Yeah…give me fifteen. I’ll be there in fifteen.

Thanks, bye. Brandy closed her cell. He’ll be here in fifteen minutes.

You think he can start it up? asked Mary Anne.

He’s not sure, but he’ll look it over Brandy said. I think if it can be done, he’ll be the one to do it.

Shall we walk back and check it out while we’re waiting? Jessica inquired. I mean, might as well while we’re waiting.

Sounds good to me Mary Anne replied.

The three ladies walked around the fire truck and firemen that were obstacles in getting to the back building. The strong stench of burnt wiring and equipment was overwhelming, and the ladies covered their mouths and noses with their sleeves and forearms as they walked past the horrific scene. Coughing erupted and eventually dominated the walk by. Yet, the ladies were determined to reach their goal. They approached the front door of the back building, which was about two hundred feet or so behind the main building back toward the large antenna. Within ten feet of the building, the three ladies stopped. They looked at each other.

Shit. Anyone have the key with them? Mary Anne sarcastically spouted. I don’t.

    Not me said Jessica.

    Me either agreed Brandy.

Mary Anne looked to the cloudless sky as the sun was setting and cried out SHIT!

She looked at Jessica and asked who might have the key? Mine are inside and we can’t go in.

Jessica cringed. She scrunched her eyebrows in thought. Not sure if Logue has one or not. Mickey does, but he’s at the hospital. Then again, his keys may be inside as well.

Brandy, wanna call Logue and see if he has one? And if not, maybe he can swing by the hospital and get them from Mickey…IF he has them? directed Mary Anne.

She flipped out her phone again…Yeah

Her phone rang and rang. It went to Logue’s voice mail.

Crap. Voice mail. He must be close. At least I hope so said Brandy.

Jessica approached the door and tried to open it anyway. No luck. It was locked. Jessica put her face to the door window and looked in, cupping her hand over her eyebrows to cut down on whatever glare she encountered. Brandy sauntered over to Jessica, and noticed the obstacle immediately.

Yeah, I’ll give you a boost she told Jessica.

Brandy maneuvered through the high grass on the back side of the building to get close to the window. She put her two hands together and bent her knees low enough so she could lift Jessica up to the window. Jessica kicked off her shoes prior to stepping onto Brandy’s delicate hands. Brandy raised her up enough to get her to the window. Jessica pushed on the window. There was very little movement, but movement nonetheless. She tried again. The window was stuck.

Damn, I thought I had it. It moved a little she told Brandy.

I’m okay holding you. Wiggle it again.

    Okay. Trying replied Jessica.

Jessica wiggled the window some more. She went back and
