So because of the lack of published information, I thought it important to gather the wealth of knowledge that is out there on the subject, collate it and present it to our community in the interests of safety ands efficiency
The book is intended as a comprehensive guide to glider towing operations, with that all important emphasis on safety. The intent is to provide all the relevant information in one straightforward, easy to read book. The notes are intended to be very generic and non-country specific. Even though local procedures differ, hopefully the information should be useful to any glider tug pilot, anywhere in the world. Each gliding organisation has its operating environment and problems, therefore should adapt, further or improve these suggestions to suit their own needs.
It is fundamental that every tug pilot be a person who is both trustworthy and highly reliable as it is a flying task with huge responsibility placed on the pilot. Aerotowing is expensive, can be noisy and has its own special hazards. These factors have a bearing on the very existence of gliding and it is therefore essential that glider aerotowing be carried out safely, efficiently and thoughtfully, paying particular regard to our neighbours. Your particular aerotowing should of course be carried out in accordance with national laws, regulations, procedures and in conjunction with your organisations flying rules.
As the pilots in command of an aircraft you are ultimately responsible for the safe conduct of the flight and the actions that you choose to take. The glider pilots requirements should of course be accommodated as far as possible.
Glider aerotowing should be good for your general flying skills. As a flying and gliding instructor for over twenty five years, I have noticed that most glider tug pilots are often also glider pilots and have above average handling and situational awareness skills. Flying tugs should of course also be quite good fun!

They are offered to club tugmasters, chief tow-pilots, and glider tug pilots as a source of guidance and recognized good practices. I first met John Marriott when we were both serving at Royal Air Force Wildenrath, in Germany in the early 1980s and were fellow members of the Phoenix Gliding Club. John stood out then by virtue of his huge enthusiasm for flying in general and gliding in particular, coupled with the serious way that he applied himself. This combination of qualities has served him well while he has pursued a successful career as an airline pilot. The same attributes made him a very good gliding instructor, even as a young man, and I was entirely comfortable when he taught my two teenage children to glide.
John retains that enthusiasm, coupled with personal altruism, a desire to serve the gliding movement in general, and the cause of flight safety in particular. The outcome is this excellent book, which is produced at his expense and the profits of which will be given to the Air League. Between its pages we are given another gift – the distillation of his decades of experience as a tug pilot and gliding instructor.
All forms of aviation are inherently dangerous, and when things go wrong in the air the situation can go from normal to life threatening with terrifying speed. This is never truer than in the seemingly routine operation of towing gliders, which is simply a consequence of the laws of physics. Aerotowing, as with everything in flying, is rendered acceptably safe by self discipline in the conscientious and thorough application of hard-won experience from the past. In his book, John offers us that experience pre-packaged and clearly expressed. I most warmly commend the book to anyone who is, or aspires to be, a glider-tug pilot.
