I thank my mother and father for giving me life, Jennie V. and Charles. I wish you could be here for this special occasion. Perhaps, you are a part of that great cloud of witnesses we are compassed about.

I want to thank my wonderful husband, Robert. He is always so patient and kind when I am working for hours at a time on one thing or another. Be blessed in all of your endeavors.

I am thankful for my troop of 12 - 4 children and 8 grandchildren. You have inspired me and gave the space when I needed it. Always remember that you are blessed of God way more than you can imagine. You will understand it better by and by.

    Introduction & Bible Survey

The word Bible comes from the Greek word biblia, which means books. So the Bible is really a collection or library of many books. It is the inspired Word of God. It has many writers but only one author. There are 1,189 chapters divided into two great volumes. The Old Testament has 39 books; the New Testament has 27 books; there are a total of 66 books. The Old Testament has 4 divisions: The Law (Genesis through Deuteronomy), History (Joshua through Esther), Poetry (Job through Song of Solomon), and Prophecy (Isaiah through Malachi). The key to understand the Old Testament involves people, places, and principles.

Everyone should read the Bible for themselves. It is a blessing as well as an adventure. You may think that you don’t have time to read the whole thing immediately but just like we take time out for practically everything else we certainly have to take out time for the Word of God! I suggest that you begin with Genesis (the book of beginnings). If you’re curious, you will want to know where those references lead. Then use my guide to review select texts that will get you through them quickly. You might want to follow one of the many Read the Bible in a Year programs to help you get through reading the entire Bible without interruption.

The Bible is unique among Holy Books. It is rooted in and intertwined with actual human history. Regardless of what everybody else says, the Bible itself claims to be the Word of God. In it you will find the interaction of God with historical people and nations. While presenting history, it doesn’t stop revealing the meaning of life and the responsibility of human beings to their Creator. The Bible is actually a collection of books - some long, some short. Although many people claim to get sleepy when reading the Bible, it is still the world’s all-time best seller and the world’s most translated book, this probably due to its life-changing qualities and because the Bible is really interesting to read. To prove how good and acceptable the Bible is, let’s begin our parallel studies with a simple survey of the first few books.

    GENESIS - DEUTERONOMY (The Law)

Genesis is the book of the beginning. In it there are four (4) great events: the creation, the fall, the flood, and the development of nations. Also, there are 4 great people representing 4 generations, Adam, Noah, Abraham, and Joseph. Joseph was a type of savior for the children in that they had to bow before him for he served in pharaoh’s chief ranking position. About 60 years after the death of Joseph the new pharaoh did not know of Joseph or of his people, thus, were the people enslaved because of their gigantic growth.

Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.

    Exodus 1:8 KJV

The book of Exodus covers the nation’s growth, the birth of Moses and his success and failures, his responsibility, God’s writing of the 10 Commandments, the 10 dreadful plagues, the nation’s departure, the parting of the Red Sea, pharaoh’s pursuit, and God’s divine protection. God had spoken to Moses to lead His people out of the land of Egypt saying that He had seen their affliction and would give them a land filled with milk and honey.

God desired to dwell with the people and He gave Moses detailed instructions to build a tabernacle whereby the people would have a place to worship Him. The tabernacle was mobile so that when God moved, the people could move. He was a cloud to lead them by day and a pillar of fire by night.

The Israelites’ ceremonies are explained in the book of Leviticus along with how Moses consecrated Aaron and his sons for the service of the Lord. The 1st five (5) books of Leviticus are devoted to describing the 5 offerings made unto the Lord. The duties of the high priests and servants of God are given in this book. The high priests wore golden bells that rang while the priests went into the Holy of holies to perform the duties unto the Lord for the atonement of their sins and the sins of the people. If the bells stopped ringing, then, the high priest was dead. This meant that he was not holy before God. If this happened, the people would cry out because they knew their sins were not forgiven. Their sins would remain unforgiven for a whole year until the next time a new high priest went before the Lord. The atonement did not take away the sins of the people; it only covered them for a period of a year.

Still under the leadership of Moses, the land was conquered and divided among the tribes in the book of Numbers. There was much murmuring, complaining, and other misbehavior among the children of Israel, which caused a lot of people to fall and not be able to make it to the Promised Land. The Bible mentions that God was not pleased with their ways.

Deuteronomy is called the book of remembrance, for in it Moses reiterates the laws God had given them. The people had misbehaved so severely that it caused Moses to not enter into the Promised Land. However, he was faithful and died at the ripe age of 120 years old. Moses had given the people some very important insights about God and instructed them to teach their children and recall the past events to them. He told them to talk to the children as they walked along the way and to impress it into their hearts, continually. But the people failed to teach the children. Teaching the children is one of the primary reasons for the inspiration of this book. As in the days of the Old Testament, God is serious about the biblical education that His children (young and old) receive.

    About This Guide

This Parallel Guide to the Scriptures by CBurnett (the scribe) is written whereas scriptures from the Old Testament / New Testament relate to each other. They appear where scriptures read/seen initially in the Old Testament are parallel to the ones in the New Testament. It is not meant to be used as scriptures reference one another, but rather, as they line up with one another. There are many references of scripture in the Bible well worth comparing; well worth reading. There are not parallel scriptures in all the books of the Bible and there are Words of Wisdom / Life (WOW-Life) where this occurs - something enlightening for today or serendipitous.
