Lady Rose Secret Agent 36-24-36 - Jean Marie Rusin

    Beauty Pageant

Lady Rose was in Atlantic City as her mission was to be in a beauty pageant.

At first she’d refused, but Joe Pickle reminded her it was her assignment, and she had to be there. She grew really angry at him, and muttering, I really don’t like this, but I will do it, stormed out of his office, slamming the door behind her.

Later when they were at the Atlantic City hotel, Joe came up to her, grabbed her, and gave her a kiss.

She told him, I’m on a mission, and you’re distracting me.

Sorry, Miss California—I mean Rose Loveless.

No, they can’t know who I am. Now you must leave me here alone so I can think about everything.

As Joe walked away, he turned and looked at her as if he wanted to run back, but he continued toward his own hotel room and shut the door behind him.

Rose picked up her bags, took them inside, and put them on the floor. She then took off her shoes, jumped on the bed, and lay back. In about a minute, she fell asleep.

About ten minutes later she was awakened by the phone ringing. Still half asleep, she asked, "What do you want from me?

I’m Martin Stone. Remember you have to register for the Miss USA pageant.

Oh, I forgot, she told him. I’ll be there in about twenty minutes, OK?

That will be fine, he said, and they both hung up the phone.

Rose got up in a hurry. Shit, shit, shit, I can’t find my shoes… now I’ll be late and my boss will fire me. However, when she looked around again, she found them. Great—now I can go. She put them on and left, taking her purse and one bag with her.

When she got to the lobby, she paged Joe and told him she was going to go sign up. Make sure that no one recognizes me, she warned him.

"Don’t worry, Rose—I’ll be watching your back.

    Great.

She found a cab to take her on the ten-minute ride to the Trump Casino. When she climbed out in her black mini dress and heels, the attendants welcomed her. She smiled and walked into the lobby, thinking to herself, what am I doing here?

Martin Stone came up to her. You’re late.

I know. I’m sorry—I was in a bad traffic jam.

No excuses—next time you’ll be out of the pageant.

Fine! So where is my dressing room? she asked.

    On the right.

    Thanks, she told him.

When she went inside, her pager went off. She made the call, and a male voice asked, What’s going on?

What do you mean? In a half hour, twenty million people will see me on network TV.

    That is the point.

Well, will I will be the target?

I can’t say, the man said and ended the call.

Now Rose was getting clearer about her mission.

Meanwhile Joe was also at the casino, working behind the scenes making sure that no one recognized Rose.

A woman he’d never seen before came up to him and said, Hi, my name is Crystal. I’m with security. We need you to come to the office next door for a moment. He was a bit suspicious, but he went with her.

The next minute he was lying on the floor, and Crystal was checking his Blackberry. Who is Rose Loveless? she asked as she finished tying him up. As Joe was too groggy to answer, she went over to a computer, saying, I will check out each agent.

About a half hour later, Joe was fully conscious. Let me go now!

    he told her.

Crystal asked again, Who’s Rose Loveless?

I don’t know, he told her.

You’re lying to me. Let’s try some truth serum. She stuck something in his arm. Now I’ll just wait and then I’ll get all the answers I need."

Meanwhile in the main showroom, everyone was getting ready to go onstage so that the pageant could begin. But Rose was looking for Joe. When she didn’t see him, she knew she had to make a code-36 to headquarters: agent missing and in danger.

But she was also wondering if she’d worn a sufficiently seductive outfit to make the judges crown her Miss U.S.A.

Crystal started to ask Joe questions, but his body had been trained to withstand the effects of truth serum. He pretended he was still woozy from when she’d hit him over the head.

A man came into the room. Lucky Star! she exclaimed.

Tell me what’s going on here, Lucky Star demanded. I thought you were getting information, but you’ve failed. We must find that agent immediately. Do you understand?

Yes, Lucky. Maybe she’s one of the pageant contestants. I’ll go out there and check it out.

Back on stage, Rose followed a contestant named Melody, who almost tripped over her own feet. Rose made it to the microphone and introduced herself. The rest of the states followed, then the MC came out and announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is the 25th year of the Miss U.S.A. pageant. Give all our lovely contestants your applause.

    *****

Crystal went back inside the office. She must be one of the women standing out there.

So how do we get to her there?

I have an idea. Crystal left and climbed up to the catwalk. She peered down at the contestants. The most likely candidate was Miss California. She knocked loose a light and made sure it fell in that direction.

    Competitions

Look out—something is falling from the ceiling! someone cried. Rose looked up, saw the light coming at her, and ran off the stage, thinking, I almost got killed.

Then Rose looked up and saw a woman leaving the catwalk. Rose tried to follow her, but lost her for a while in the crowd. Then she saw her going out the exit.

When she went outside, the woman she was pursuing was getting into a car, which drove off. Rose looked around for a taxi to follow it, but couldn’t find one in time.

She went back inside. Apparently someone had been injured by the falling light, and the pageant was still in turmoil. She resumed her search for Joe.

When she saw Jewel go inside an office, Rose followed her. Just as she was about to go through the doorway, she heard Joe begging for his life. Jewel had his gun pointed at him and evidently was about to shoot him.

Quickly Rose pulled out her own gun and started to shoot at Jewel. The other woman shot back, and the bullets were flying around, missing Joe by merely inches.

Joe yelled, Get out, Rose—they want to kill you!

A moment later, Jewel grabbed Joe and stuck the gun against his neck. Put up your hands and drop your gun, she told Rose. You have three seconds or I’ll shoot Joe.

All right! Rose dropped the gun and put her hands up.

    Come over here by Joe.

Rose did as Jewel had directed, but when she got a little closer, she flashed a signal with her eyes to Joe. As soon as she got close enough to Jewel, he made a loud noise, momentarily distracting Jewel while Rose reached under her gown and pulled out the second gun she had strapped to her leg.

She held it up against Jewel’s head. Let him go, now.

Jewel dropped her gun and untied him. Then Rose used the ropes to tie up Jewel.

She told Joe, Go to the car now and call Star. Tell her it is a code twenty-four. She will know what that means.

Yes, that our identity has been revealed, and we’re in danger. So we need to just go back to headquarters and get a new assignment.

    "No,
