    Dedicated to

My loving mother, who passed away and sent me to a place where I found respect, values, compassion and dignity. To the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. To Mrs. Patsy Brown and Mrs. Rosie Mitchell for all of their assistance. I give thanks to Mrs. Betty Myers who pushes me to the limits to be and do my very best. To Sister Rose Marie McDemott, who help to change our way of life forever.

Special thanks to Sister Antoninus Martin who encourage me to write and to cross over the bridge that I have been standing at for the last forty years and to Felicia Taylor for her time and efforts in seeing the completion of this book.

This is a true story about a young man struggling within Himself and meeting a group of Sisters who took the time to share their faith with him, rather than conceal it.

It speaks of generosity, healing, self-respect, motivation, communication, spirit, compassion, death, and God’s messengers.

There can never be enough kind words or prayer to relent the joy I have encountered knowing such people of faith.

All of our lives have a purpose. Some never complain, while other’s take action. To deal with frustration through grace and prayer help us to appreciate what we really have.

Life can be difficult, but through Christ, it’s to know he is our scriptures and shields of defense to life itself; for we are never alone.

    Coming to Schumpert

Never in my wildest dreams would I have believed the path in which I was about to embark on would lead to a whole new world.

I was born on the nineteenth day, and the nineteenth of twenty-one children and with twelve fingers.

At an early age, I excelled in school, had good teachers, friends, and parents.

I started working at the age of seven working for neighbors, cleaning and raking leaves. I caddied at the local golf course for pennies on the dollar. We were a poor family, but a proud one as well. I learned what it meant to work at an early age from my parents. These weren’t real jobs, but they allowed me to buy little things that my parents couldn’t always afford to give me. I was too young to know what real struggle really was. Given the facts in today’s world, my parents must have been the most dedicated people I knew.

We were a family that faced spiritual challenges every day. All of us had a tin cup with our initial on them for drinking water. My Mom would prepare a large pot of beans and greens for most of our dinner meals. Some days preparing rice, cornbread and even fat back were extras. Mom could cook a turkey and work wonders. One day it would be turkey and dressing, the next day, turkey salad, and on the third day turkey rice soup. She really knew how to find ways to feed such a large family. Our good neighbors and friend would give Mom hand me down clothing to help our family. She did not always have the best of clothing to give, but what we did have was clean and neat.

Getting up early everyday and going to school was a must in our house. It was the duties of the oldest in the family to ensure that we not only make it to school, but on time as well. Accountability my Mom would say.

My Mom worked as a maid. She would leave early for work before we would ever get up. After working a long day she would return home to start all over again; cooking, washing, and cleaning to take care of her family. How she managed this I will never know.

Discipline was the order of falling in line when it came to meals being served in our house. Being late for dinner meant no seconds.

We did not always have lunch money for school, but the little brown bag with syrup, biscuit, and a piece of dry salt bacon would be fulfillment to get us through the day. We were taught not to be ashamed of who we were but to be proud to get an education.

I began to hang out and follow old bad friends. My Mom knew something was wrong and decided to make a change with me.

At an early age in my life I was lead to a path for which my destiny would change forever. Like a young bird leaving the nest, I wanted to help out with the finances at home. I was raised by a very hard core Christian mom. I was baptized at an early age and occasionally read the Bible.

My Mom saw something in me I couldn’t see in myself at the time. There were fourteen of us living together under one roof. My
