    The legend of O’Briah,

as told from star to tree,

    translated by the flowers,

    for their Princess Emily.

    The Briah is a world

    of memory, myth, and light

    that shows itself in rainbows

and the twinkling stars of night.

    To be of the Briah,

    a world of ancient times,

    home to all that flowers

    and all the natural signs.

It sends to us the north winds

and the rain that falls so light,

where rich earth grows abundant fruit

    and fireflies light the night.

It travels on the songs of birds

as they float upon the breeze.

    It’s where the old-time stories

    are whispered by the trees.

It awakens to the sound of drums

and smiles to greet the sun.

    There, there is but one rule;

Do as you will, harm none.

Then, two more flowers joined in—a little white one and a dark red one. As the birds sang to welcome the new day, the flowers, together, asked me, Have you ever heard a more joyous sound?

I listened to the birds in the trees and the crickets among the leaves; I heard the creek that bubbled over the stones, even the wind that whispered high in the treetops, but again my mind went back to that little girl I’d met the day before, Emily. She was pretending to be a cat chasing the swirling leaves on the sidewalk.

    Yes, I have, I replied.

    Tell us! they cried.

    I have heard laughter.

Now all the forest flowers began to sway,
