About this ebook

Orpah Walked Ahead of Ruth

Because of how Orpahs name is consistently placed ahead of Ruth, we have been sent a message that Orpah was a great woman and Orpah left us a great story. We understand that Ruth was significant, but the Holy Bible is letting us know that the greatness of Orpah should not be overlooked. Of course, we do not have the story of Orpah in the Bible like we have the story of Ruth. But, it is the writers belief that we are to tell her story and this is the authors version of the story of the woman Orpah or as we may say the name today, Oprahs story. When the writer envisions the caravan headed by Naomi, the writer sees Naomi, walking first, Orpah second and Ruth walking behind Naomi and Orpah. So, read and enjoy the story of this fascinating strong, faithfuland brave woman called Orpah.

    Ruth 1:4-15

    4. Now they took wives of the women of Moab: the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth. And they dwelt there about ten years. 5. Then, both Mahlon and Chilion also died; so the woman survived her two sons and her husband. 6. Then she arose with her daughters-in-law that she might return from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the country of Moab that the Lord had visited His people by giving them bread. 7. Therefore she went out from the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah. 8. And Naomi said to her two daughters-in law, Go, return each to her mother’s house. The Lord deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me. 9. The Lord grant that you may find rest, each in the house of her husband. So she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices and wept. 10. And they said to her, Surely we will return with you to your people. 11. But Naomi said, Turn back, my daughters; why will you go with me? Are there still sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands? 12. Turn back my daughters, go- for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say I have hope, If I should have a husband tonight and should also bear sons, 13. Would you wait for them till they were grown? Would you restrain yourselves from having husbands? No, my daughters; for it grieves me very much for your sakes that the hand of the Lord has gone out against me! 14. Then they lifted up their voices and wept again; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her. 15. And, she said, Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods.; return after your sister-in-law."

    Foreword

We find the name Orpah in Ruth 1: verses 4-15 in the Holy Bible (KJV). Although, Ruth, the sister-in-law to Orpah is the significant sister-in-law in this book, oddly enough, Orpah is listed first when discussing the two women. Also, when we read of the two husbands of these women, Orpah’s husband Chilion, is mentioned second to his brother, Mahlon, the husband of Ruth. It seems peculiar that these persons are listed in this manner in the Bible. When looking at how the names are placed, it would suggest that Orpah’s role was more significant than the role of Ruth. It would appear that the eldest son’s wife would be listed first and we would presume that Mahlon is the eldest son since he is listed first whenever the two sons are mentioned. However, Ruth was married to Mahlon and she is repeatedly mentioned after Orpah, who was married to Chilion. Also, it could not be that the names were placed alphabetically, since Mahlon comes after Chilion. Because of how her name is placed ahead of Ruth, we have been sent a message that Orpah was a great woman and Orpah left us a great story. Of course, we do not have the story of Orpah in the Bible like we have the story of Ruth. But, it is the writer’s belief that we are to tell her story and this is the author’s version of the story of the woman Orpah or as we may say the name today, Oprah’s story. When the writer envisions the caravan headed by Naomi, the writer sees Naomi, walking first, Orpah second and Ruth walking behind Naomi and Orpah.

    About the Author

    Introduction

Names taken from the Bible are of great significance to those who take these names and bestow them upon daughters, granddaughters, nieces, goddaughters and other significant persons in their life. The author speaks of names for females because this book is about a woman in the Bible. It is evidenced through out history that names taken from the Bible have been given to many powerful and famous men and women. Even as I write, new born babies, both male and female, are being named after persons in the Bible. In the majority of the time, these names are taken exactly as they are spelled and pronounced. But, in some cases, the names have been changed for various reasons; however, the similarities can be readily seen and heard. Sometimes, our ancestors changed the spelling or pronunciation to make the name sound more pleasant to the ear, like they did so many other things in life. This is the case, the author believes, that was done to the name of Orpah. It is the author’s opinion that our ancestors changed this name to Oprah because it sounded better for a female to be called Oprah rather than Orpah.
