    Ky - Richard Wayne Bobholz

    Chapter 1

Ritwo, like most powerful people, liked power, and through deception and his vast intelligence of military equipment, Ritwo constantly wrestled for more of it. As the Scientist General of India, he was in a position to his liking, but in one night, his power was stripped from him, first through Ky’s destruction of his lab, and second, through the Empire’s invasion of India. The weaponry that Ritwo had designed was impressive, but they couldn’t hold up to the sheer force the Empire sent in that night.

Though his army was destroyed, his inventions capture, and his plans foiled, Ritwo was neither captured nor discouraged. As a scientist, he entered the ranks for the Empire. Shortly thereafter, he was noticed and employed personally by Crotonee to continue his work. Crotonee had no idea who he was or what he was working on in India, nor could he have known of any ulterior motives. What Crotonee did know was that Ritwo had a good heart and an even better mind. For these, Crotonee employed him. When Crotonee needed a problem solved, he turned to Ritwo. Through time, they had even become friends.

His trust for Ritwo was immense. It was enough that when Crotonee passed on, he had appointed Ritwo as the new Guardian of Earth. Ritwo and the Council were both deeply surprised by this move.

The Council, a group of twelve generals, followed the Guardian’s orders directly. The guardian made decisions based upon the Council’s advice, and the Council ran parts of the Empire based upon the Guardian’s orders. In theory, neither had power without the other. The Guardian did not have a military, so he was dependent upon the Council, and supposedly, the Council members could be replaced by the Guardian. Ritwo’s only real power came from the other council members. If enough of them opposed him, he would no longer have that power. Because all the council members were loyal to Crotonee before the unification even started, it was not hard for him to control them. They respected him, but few respected Ritwo. Ritwo’s council was split between those who oppose his rule and those who didn’t care. He had very few supporters.

It was the third day of Ritwo’s reign and several councilmen had publicly disclaimed loyalty to him the day before. On top of that, the guards that protected Crotonee’s palace decided to desert leaving Ritwo virtually unprotected.

The Guardian was the only thing that kept the Council from becoming separate factions, but as Ritwo was quickly realizing, they were already separate factions immediately after Crotonee’s death.

Only hours after the guards deserted, there was a stern knock on the door of the palace. Ritwo hadn’t arranged any meetings yet, and if even he had, there was an office in the Council Building for him to use. Additionally, despite the fact that there were no guards, the palace grounds were hard to get on to. Nerves should have taken over here, but frustration took hold of Ritwo instead. How am I supposed to protect the planet if I can’t protect my own home? He bolstered, and added challengingly, let them in!

Jev, the personal guard and servant to Ritwo, swung the door open. On the other side stood a man, no taller than five and a half feet. A dark shroud covered his entire body except his sickly brown eyes and one scared hand that grasped onto a walking stick. Either this man was dying, or he had been in a horrible fire or explosion.

What do you want? Jev asked.

The man’s eyes moved from Jev to Ritwo in the background. You, he growled in a voice that didn’t sound at all sick. I represent a member of the Council who kindly requests that you step down. My name is Extonic Jarod, and I will be replacing you.

That’s not going to happen, laughed Ritwo.

Rest assured, it will, Extonic calmly explained. I am glad you’re stubborn though. I wouldn’t want any of this to end peacefully. It’s a new order, and the weak cannot stand to rule this Earth.

As Extonic took a step forward, Jev put his hand out as if to ask him to stay where he was. In one swift motion, Extonic parried Jev’s arm with his stick, punched him in the stomach, and while he was hunched over, kicked him in the side of the face, tossing him to the side.

You know nothing of the grave need of the world, Extonic continued, unabated by his feat. There are people dying of starvation, gangs that run parts of this world, and murderous villains running rampant through our cities. In three days, you’ve managed to do nothing. In the world we live in, we cannot spare three days.

From watching Jev tossed aside so easily, Ritwo was afraid. He barely heard any of the words Extonic spoke. He wore an electronic shield that protected him from small massed objects like bullets, but he didn’t expect someone to kill him with martial arts. He always thought that fighting with fists was a thing of ancient history, relying heavily on his science. Now, the fists of one man were going to be his downfall.

Extonic chuckled as Ritwo tried to form what he thought was a defensive stance. Never been in a fight before, have you? he asked.

Ritwo drew his gun and shot Extonic right in the chest, but the bullet was stopped just before it reached him. No doubt he had the same type of shield as Ritwo had. In the middle of Extonic’s now full-bellied laugh, Jev leaped to his feet and took a mighty swing at Extonic’s head. Somehow aware of the oncoming attack, Extonic leaned back, allowing the punch and part of Jev’s body to cross over top of him. Once Jev’s torso crossed over Extonic’s body, Extonic pushed off with his feet into a back handspring, ensuring to kick Jev in the chest and send him flying out the door as he performed his acrobatics.

Jev, in pain, looked up to see four burly soldiers right before they hit him with something that made him black out.

With his bodyguard gone, and Ritwo having no concept of how to fight, he decided to come out swinging. He ran at Extonic. Extonic dodged his first punch and responded with a punch to the stomach. Ritwo was tough and ignored the pain. He swung again. This time, Extonic grabbed his arm and pulled on it as he punched Ritwo three times in the face as hard as he could. The first hit knocked Ritwo out, but the three hits happened so fast, Extonic had finished them before realizing Ritwo was unconscious and falling to the
