    FOREWORD

Writing this foreword for Ngozi has been an enlightening experience for me. As Ngozi’s professor and advisor during her recent Master’s Program at our university, I have been witness to her superior performance during these past few years. One time, when I was advising Ngozi, she shared some of her experiences and told me she had written a book when she was in Nigeria. This book entitled Called Together was published in 1998 and focused upon living and ministering together with her husband, a college teacher and a pastor. As she shared this with me, I marveled at her ability and a side of her that I had never seen before this. In addition, when asked to write this foreword for Ngozi, she shared some of her other experiences up until this time. Throughout her life, Ngozi has made contributions in many ways, to her church, her family, her community and her profession. She is an artist who participated in one solo and several group exhibits. She also has made several presentations in the United States on Nigerian textiles.

In addition to advising Ngozi throughout her Master’s program, I had the privilege of teaching her during a very challenging graduate course. Ngozi, a soft-spoken woman was careful in selecting her words and always had such valuable and thoughtful contributions. She did not just attend, in class she seemed to absorb everything and this was reflected in her work throughout our program.

After reading Lyrics of the Gong, I realized that Ngozi carries this behavior into her life. She is an astute observer of people, nature, forces and possesses a deep spirituality that can soothe anyone who reads her poems. Ngozi possesses a rare wisdom that has been acquired through her perceptions and skills of observation. As I read through her poems, I found myself silently saying, yes. They are pure, realistic, but yet hopeful. The division of this book into themes seems right for this collection of poems. I particularly resonated to the theme of education that Ngozi included in her book. As a special education teacher, Ngozi questions the negative behaviors of students. She provides insight, but at the same time is always hopeful that those angry students will see the light. The theme of hopefulness seems to pervade throughout her book

Any reader of Lyrics of the Gong will also be educated about a way of life and a culture that exists in Nigeria. The dates of the poems allow the reader to put the poems into a timeframe, although they move around due to the thematic organization. The order makes these poems timeless. Although they may be written at a certain time period of life, they make one realize that the same issues, concerns and appreciations always exist for humankind.

It has been a privilege to read Ngozi’s poetry, to write this foreword and to be enlightened and educated through my reading. I find that when reading her poems, I feel a peace fall over me. With each reading, I make a
