The Contents of a Grant Proposal
Those of you whose fund raising careers have spanned a few short years will remember discretionary grants awards that were made largely outside of the funder guidelines — were a dime a dozen if you knew the right people. These awards may still reveal themselves, but now everything is scrutinized even the wrong font size will not make the grade. A project run outside of a specified geographic region is likely to immediately disqualify your proposal. Make sure that a request is strongly supported by your organizations mission.
It is one thing to make sure that a project meets a foundation’s criteria for funding; So many nonprofit organizations are teetering on financial instability. Funders want to ensure that their programs will be central to a grantee’s mission. That way, the funded program will be less likely to be cut should financial shortages occur.
Make clear in communications to your program officer how a proposal relates to plans of your organization. Focus on the good that will come out of the proposed project, not the tearful story about why the grant is needed. Unfortunately, every nonprofit has its share of sob stories these days, and a program officer can only read so many in this economic climate, nonprofits that can demonstrate success will catch the scrutiny of program officers.
