Chapter One: SUMMER VACATION
The RV made good time on route 10, that first day of vacation, traveling from Phoenix, AZ to the west coast. The family within merrily singing, Over the river and through the woods,
when Gail, the mommy, interrupted,
Enough! We’ve sung every song we can think of. It’s June, for heaven’s sake, I refuse to sing Christmas songs in the summer.
Actually,
explained eleven-year-old Corielle, this is a Thanksgiving song. They are going over the river and though the woods to have Thanksgiving dinner at Grandmother’s house.
Corielle, you are always so technical,
laughed her mom. With that little mind of yours so focused on details, I just know you will be a brilliant lawyer or scientist some day. All right, you three play some games; I’m going to put miss sleepyhead here, down for a nap.
Gail picked up three year-old Sienna and went in the back of the RV to tuck her into a bunk with side-rails that Daddy Jeff added for safety.
Jeff was just starting to unwind after the hectic business of loading up the RV and getting on the road. His job was very demanding and he was anxious to get away on vacation with his family. Let’s play Middle of the Word,
he said, Clue is ~ place. What place has double o in the middle?
Corielle moved to the front seat. I know,
she chirped, In the middle of a room.
That was quick, Corielle, your turn.
Okay, the clue is animal. The letters are o n k.
Seven-year-old Travis was quick to answer. In the middle of a donkey and a monkey.
Oh pooh,
said Corielle, I was hoping you would say one or the other and I would getcha.
Very good, Travis
Jeff chuckled, go ahead
This is a place, where would you find i s n together?
Prison
, Corielle blurted out. Oh no, the s and n aren’t together. I give up.
Disneyland, Daddy, are we going to Disneyland again?
No, not this year, son,
confirmed Jeff. Your mom and I decided we should get away from pollution, noise, traffic and people. We are all going to enjoy the beauty of nature. We’ll be hiking in the woods where there’s clean air, big trees and waterfalls.
Corielle wrinkled her nose and said, Doesn’t sound like much fun.
Yeah,
Travis agreed, What is there to do for fun?
Gail joined them up front, Are you kids ganging up on your father?
Well yes,
Corielle complained, as she put her thick, curly hair up into a ponytail, I mean, a vacation is supposed to be a time for swimming and going on rides and stuff. Being in the woods with bugs and snakes, Ee-ew, and what about wild animals?
Let’s vote on it,
Travis exclaimed. I vote for the same vacation we had last year.
Last summer they rented a cabin near the ocean. Some days they went to the beach to swim and collect shells, or fish off the pier. Other days were spent traveling to special places like Disneyland, Marineland, Seaworld, Wild Animal Park and the San Diego Zoo.
Sienna was just two years old then and quite a handful. Her parents knew they would have to go back in a few years and do it all over again when Sienna was older so she could enjoy it more.
This year they bought the RV so they could travel in style as soon as school let out. A neighbor friend agreed to feed their fish and birds. Freckle-faced Travis was allergic to cats and dogs, so he had a large tank full of exotic fish, and there was a big atrium birdcage with finches in the front hallway.
Come on now guys,
Jeff said, this year is different but there will be spectacular scenery and we will have time to relax, take photographs, breathe fresh air…
Both kids started groaning.
Jeff reprimanded them. Now look, I don’t want to hear whining all the way. Tomorrow we plan to stop at LeggoLand to break up the trip. It will be the only amusement park we will go to this summer.
That’s right,
Gail said. Your daddy and I are looking forward to this trip, don’t spoil it for us.
Okay, I’m sorry,
Travis said, What’s for lunch?
Gail made sandwiches and served them with milk and fruit. Jeff soon stopped to get gas, letting them all out to stretch their legs and then Gail drove for a while.
Jeff reclined in his seat. i ~ clue is ~ walk in the woods. Where am I?
In the middle of a hike. Okay Dad, we get it,
grumbled Corielle. Hope you’re good at wrestling mountain lions.
The next day at the Theme Park was spent trudging from one ride to another, only to stand in line half an hour for a two-minute thrill. It was fun and tiring for the children, although grueling for the adults. Jeff was patient, knowing this was the children’s idea of fun, but he couldn’t wait to get on the road again.
The following morning they headed up to Sequoia National Park. The giant redwoods were awesome. The whole family enjoyed the majesty of the trees. They stayed there two days and saw a deer by the lake. They watched a mother bear and her cubs being shooed away by a Park ranger. The children made some friends and their appetites improved with the clean air and exercise. Gail took some great pictures.
This is just what I needed,
Jeff sighed. I can feel the stress melting away.
Next, they traveled to Yosemite National Park. This was another scenic wonder. The family hiked to the falls and Gail took many photographs. Corielle and Travis had such a good time they were reluctant to leave.
The following morning, they were on highway 5 headed for Ashland, Oregon to visit Jeff’s aunt, Dorothy, and her husband, Richard, the owners of a Bed & Breakfast Inn. Ashland was a bustling theatre town in the summer, a big tourist attraction. Gail had sent for tickets in advance and Aunt Dorothy supplied a baby-sitter for the kids while the adults spent a few evenings seeing plays.
As long as Travis took his allergy medicine, he was able to run and play with Aunt Dorothy’s two Labrador Retrievers.
This is a real treat for the dogs,
laughed Dorothy, watching the one Yellow lab and one Chocolate lab romp with the children in the large yard.
The family had a pleasant visit before
