About this ebook

More people than you may realize suffer from the effects of schizophrenia, and there is no cure for this mental illness. In Insight into Disability, author Doug Pargeter candidly reveals his battle with schizophrenia: how he learned to cope with the symptoms and gain control of his life through treatment, proper medication, and his devotion to the Lord.

In this memoir, Pargeter shares his life story: growing up as one of five children in Seattle, Washington; serving in the air force; attending college; being married and having children; battling cancer; and living with schizophrenia. Insight into Disability provides a firsthand look at how mental illness affects all aspects of a personal life, such as maintaining relationships and being employed.

Meant to inspire, Insight into Disability shares Pargeters successes, breakthroughs, and triumphs over adversity. It communicates how his gift for writing song lyrics, which are interspersed throughout the book, contributes to his healing within. He describes how his relationship with God saved his life and how he became a changed man through his treatment.

    PROLOGUE

An insightful look into the life of an extraordinary schizophrenic and his accomplishments and genius and discovering the tragedy which changed his life for the good and the debilitating illness that affected all aspects of his life and its daily symptoms along with the miracles in his life which are many including overcoming death. His relationship with God saved his life and how he became a changed man through his treatment.

This is a love story which strikes at the heart of man and tests our souls. Accompanied by song lyrics he wrote about his life throughout the book that harmonize with the topic of each chapter. Some of the names have been changed to protect those evolved. Schizophrenia affect’s millions of people, one out of every eleven people have this illness. This book will help you understand the illness; I am emphatic for those who suffer from it and give you tools for those who need to overcome the symptoms they face every day. This book will give you hope for the future so you can plan a rewarding life.

Although there is no recovery possible from schizophrenia there is stabilization. Someone who is suffering form the illness can become a strong American and a righteous Christian. Although I have symptom I understand them and this makes me not dangerous. Only one percent of schizophrenics are dangerous and they ruin the reputation of the good peaceful ones.

Although we had every comfort a home could have there is nothing that can take the place of teaching and studying the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the home to our family, my wife was honored to stay home with the children when they were young and teach them the scriptures needed later for adult life and I supported her so she could do it. That’s why I built our home so we didn’t need two incomes.

    My History

    (1949-2010)

Your mental health affect’s all aspects of your life when you become disabled: your sex life; your employment; your mood and attitude; your relationships and marriage; your daily activities; your peace of mind; and your religious experiences.

You may ask yourself why I have shared my symptoms and life with you. I feel I can help those who suffer from paranoid schizophrenia as they read my story they can see how I coped with these symptoms and gained control of my life thru treatment and proper medication, even though I still suffer from symptoms, and how the reality I share can be revealing and insightful advice to them though there is no cure for schizophrenia.

I was born to Fred and Alta Pargeter and lived where they grew up in Arbor Heights Seattle WA. I attended grade school there and high school at Chief Sealth. I had a normal childhood with four siblings Alan, Mike, Diane and Sherry. I was in the middle and got along well with my siblings and was a model child. My dad hit me occasionally to correct me. People with schizophrenia have complications coming from abuse as a child.

When I was four I got rheumatic fever and my legs were paralyzed. I remember having a temperature of 105 degrees and all the symptoms of delirium. We lived in a little three bedroom house and there I spent my entire childhood. I would take on projects to keep busy, one such project was my fort I built. One day my underground fort caved in on top of me, all you could see was my head sticking out. My dad went looking for me and after a long time he found me and dug me out and saved me. Then there was a two story tower I build with scrap wood. I caught pigeons in the Firehouse tower and raised them just for fun, not for racing and made a cage for them.

When my brothers and I got in trouble my dad would make us put on the boxing gloves to settle our trouble in a boxing match. This was the first experience of fighting I experienced early in my life.

After high school I went into the Air force and was stationed in Ansbach Germany in 1973. It was at this time I suffered my first symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia and was discharged from the Air force due to this stress related illness with an honorable discharge as I could not perform my job under the circumstances according to the Air force it was a service related illness.

I received an Associates of Drafting Technology Degree from Green River Community College in 1976; I was considered a genius in my field. My first job out of college was at Lawrence Livermore Lab. I can’t talk about what kind of things I worked on there, except to say they were electronic and mechanical in nature. I stayed for two years and then got a job with Northrup in Newbury Park and Los Angeles my work was secret and I was able to advance in my field. I moved to Washington and went to work for Boeing as an Aircraft Tool Designer in 1981. During this time I built two houses of my dreams on my five acres in Arlington WA. The stress of working full time and building after work long into the night and every week end made me mentally ill. I was having anger problems and some residual signs and symptoms of paranoia. I began counseling with my wife. I was so suspicious of everyone I couldn’t stay in one place for very long and moved a lot. So I took a job with Northrup in LA in 1985. I advanced to an engineer and supervisor while I was there but a job with Boeing but I only stayed a few years and went back to our home in WA and got a job with Boeing as a drafter taking a cut in pay and a demotion, only to take care of my family who some of them were ill. I couldn’t get along and was transferred to a job out of my career field a systems analysis. This didn’t last long and I was let go due to my medication I was taking for my mental health was not tolerated by the company.

Later as an adult working for Boeing I traded cash for salvaged parts for a Sun Runner Boat and bought a motor and outdrive and salvaged trailer parts and built a boat and trailer. I took my children for camping and skiing for a few times I was able to visit with them. It was hard to find time when my children wanted to be with me then. At Boeing I had trouble keeping my job and was ready to move on because I was suspicious and paranoid and made too many mistakes, but positive things also did happened back then in 1991.

Justin went on a mission for the church and I was proud he baptized fifty people and returned after his mission to marry a girl he met there in San Antonio. She had a family of five and both of them were active in the church.

My children were Justin, Terra, Tamara, Nancy and Martha there pictures are in this book for when they were children. Nancy and Tamara I had a relationship with but lost it as well as the others. Terra stopped contact with the family.

It’s my advice that you brace yourself for loss of not
