Capítulo 1: LUCIFER ESPANTA A TODOS
Chapter 1: LUCIFER SCARES THEM ALL
Chapter 1: LUCIFER SCARES THEM ALL
Well, Juanita, are you taking Juan his lunch?
asked Abuelo as Juanita walked around the courtyard from Maria’s kitchen door.
Yes, Abuelo, he’s plowing the river field and Maria shouldn’t be walking all that way in this heat. It won’t be long before their baby is due,
answered Juanita. His new tractor has him so absorbed, he forgets to come back to eat.
At the mention of the old tractor that was Juan’s pride, both laughed. Juanita’s big cousin swore he could make anything mechanical work and he had actually gotten the old machine working.
I’ll walk down to the side pasture with you,
said Abuelo. I want to see how the new horse your uncle Enrique sent us is settling in.
Do you think he’s going to be all right?,
worried Juanita. He was covered in sweat when they tried to get him off the truck.
I hope so,
replied Abuelo, I’ve never seen such a nervous animal in all my life and I’ve been around horses since I was born. The way he shied when he came down the ramp would have killed any normal horse.
You mean the way he put his forelegs on the ramp and then bent down as though he was bowing? Is that hard for a horse to do?
Hard? He went all the way down to his chest, like a cat stretching, with his back legs inside the truck and his front legs halfway down the ramp. I never saw a horse do that before. Then he just pulled himself up and jumped down the rest of the ramp. I thought he’d broken a leg for sure. If your cousin Carlos hadn’t had a good hold on the halter rope he’d probably be in the next state by now. He sure moves like a cat though. More like a tiger.
He looks like black panther although he has a ghost on his forehead like a phantom,
said Juanita, trying to think of a better name for the big horse.
Passing through the road into the newly plowed field, Juanita and her grandfather stopped at the poles that fitted into the posts to close off the adjacent meadow. As Abuelo slid the bottom pole out and laid it on the ground, Juanita looked happily at their new arrival. He’s so beautiful,
she sighed, even if they do call him a demon horse. What color is he?
Abuelo laughed, What color is that bird darting in front of us? The one with the twin tail, the swallow.
Black,
answered Juanita, watching the beautiful bird dart down in a swift dive.
Well, now what color is it?,
asked Abuelo as the bird pulled out of its dive just in front of them.
Oh, its throat and chest are almost gold. How beautiful. Do you mean that our horse is that color? His chest isn’t gold.
No,
answered Abuelo, But he is black from his ears to the tip of his tail on the top and has tan hairs mixed in on his chest, stomach and around the black rim on his nose. It’s sort of like the mix that the swallow has.
The huge thoroughbred heard them and turned toward them at a fast trot. Juanita gasped, Abuelo, he doesn’t touch the ground when he trots. His feet seem to pause in the air before he touches. It’s beautiful.
Suddenly Lucifer broke his smooth stride, exploding into a series of huge bucks, his head down and his feet high in the air, covering enormous strides high in the air.
Abuelo, why did he do that? Won’t he hurt himself?
Abuelo answered with his eyes narrowed, Yes, he will if he keeps on doing such huge bucks. I don’t know why he did it and don’t like it at all. At least he seems to get along with people on the ground, regardless of how dangerous he is to his rider. Imagine naming such a fine horse Lucifer. Now run on Juanita, Juan’s lunch is going to get cold. He’s almost to the end of this furrow now and you can meet him at the big tree when he comes back up the slope to plow this way.
Juanita walked along the path between the high rock wall of the meadow and the freshly plowed black loam furrows on her left. How wonderful the earth smells,
she thought, taking a deep breath that sent her coughing. Ugh! That old tractor smells awful, just like the city used to. Juan has a lot of work to do to get it running well.
She watched him turn the tractor to start back along the next furrow. All at once, a ball of black smoke belched out behind the tractor and she heard a huge backfire explosion from the old machine.
Suddenly she heard Abuelo yell, Whoa, whoa, you black demon, stop.
Then his voice changed into a frightened scream, Juanita, Juanita, Watch out!
Juanita stopped, What could have frightened Abuelo?
Suddenly a huge dark shape appeared over the high rock wall on her right, cleared the high brush that flanked the wall and landed right in front of her. Without losing a stride, the frightened horse took off running right into the plowed field. Feeling the lose earth under his feet, he gathered himself up and launched into a tremendous long jump, landing in another fresh furrow. Tripping on the banked earth, Lucifer flew into the air, turned a complete somersault and landed heavily on his back in another furrow.
Juanita was already running before she realized what she was doing. You crazy horse, you’ve killed yourself.
She called to the huge mass on the ground. But, by the time she reached him, he was already struggling to his feet. Forgetting her fear of the enormous animal, she ran to his head crooning to him. Silly, crazy animal, why did you do such a dangerous thing?
Lucifer turned his head to her and did a strange thing, he pushed his head against her body, his eye ridges under her arms. He leaned against her, eyes tightly shut and didn’t move. Juanita hugged him softly. You poor scared creature. You need someone to mother you, don’t you?
He didn’t look up, even when Juan arrived breathless and running.
Here Juanita,
he called, tearing off his shirt. Tie this around his neck while I see if Abuelo is all right. He must be scared to death thinking this crazy horse landed on you.
