Introduction
This book is unique. There is no plot, no situation
, no protagonist. There is no profound problem to solve. This book is a collection of words of wisdom by professionals who are exceptionally skilled, highly trained, and vital to the medical and heathcare community. These are nurses and they have inspiring and important messages for those in the profession, as well as others in the medical and healthcare field. Collectively the nurses whose words of wisdom are printed here have hundreds of years of education and clinical or research experience. Many have been pioneers in the field of nursing.
When I first set out to develop this book, I knew I wanted a broad representation of nurses to share their words of wisdom
with the rest of us. I invited nurses to participate based on what I knew to be their commitment and contribution to the field, their research, and their academic achievements. Those interested responded and their contributions are contained here.
I am grateful that so many talented and gifted nurses saw the value and importance of this project to take time out to share their advice and experience.
This book is the second of several medical, nursing, and dental specialty books. I hope more nurses will participate in future editions and join those who chose to be in this, the first, Words of Wisdom: Nursing.
To all of you who contributed your nursing wisdom, I express my sincere admiration and gratitude.
Thank you for your efforts, your commitment to the profession, and the care you give your patients.
For those long in the nursing field, just entering it, or even just considering it, I believe you will find their words of wisdom
an invaluable resource in your journey.

My Wisdom
Wash your hands. Hand washing is probably one of the most important rituals that all healthcare providers can possibly do, not only for the patient’s sake but for yours as well. Keeping your hands clean is one of the most essential ways to prevent the spread of infection and illness.
Treat all patients as if they were your family. If you have ever been on the receiving end of vital medical information you will understand.
If you do not know the answer to a question, find someone who does or look it up.
Be warm with your presentation. Never be afraid to make your patients laugh.
Always protect your eyes with a face shield or some equivalent. Blood and debris are sneaky and they can find themselves anywhere at any time.
Don’t let a day go by without telling your parents you appreciate all they have done for you and most importantly that you love them. Life changes very quickly when you least expect it.
Protect yourself
